Bertolt Brecht
is known in the
United States
as the foremost exponent
of the Epic theater of our time, especially that raffish, picaresque
masterpiece of sardonic humor, The Threepenny Opera". In this and
other works for the stage,
Brecht
sought primarily to educate and
enlighten his audience, rather than touch its emotions. But he was
unable to suppress his astonishing lyrical and sensuous gifts, which
break out in the poetry underlying the grim realities of his themes.
"Brecht
is the greatest living German poet," says Hannah
Arendt.
It is as a poet that
Brecht
is brought before the public in this volume
—
a poet of functional beauty who had few equals in his own or any other
language. His style is spare, clean, unadorned, incisively aimed at
the lesson he is teaching. His lyricism takes the form of the folk-song
tradition, whicjgjsahsforms his verse into a battle cry, a marching
song, a slashitflynstrument for satire.
The selection here ranges from his early
Hauspostille,
first pub¬
lished in
1927,
with its romantic bitterness expressed in such masterfuf
poems as Concerning the Infanticide, Marie Farrar, to his late Song,
Poems and Choruses with their dissections of the hypocrisies of Fascism.
It includes many scathing songs and ballads from his stage work,
among them The Threepenny Opera, Mahagonny, and ethers.
In this bilingual edition which gives the complete German text, the
English translation is by the distinguished novelist and translator,
H. R. Hays. In his introduction, Mr. Hay evaluates the position of
Brecht
among modern poets and views him as "the only social poet
writing today." |
