Contemplation on the Chronicle of Life of the Composer and Painter
The art theorist
Miroslav
Kudrna has chosen a catalogue method for exploring Foerster s
impulses for creative activity. All available paintings and drawings from Foerster s estates
(currently part of the collections of the Czech Museum of Music and the collections of
Hilar
Myslik)
have been placed into the public and social context and the context of Foerster s
personality and development. The author contemplates how individual paintings and
compositions came into being during all periods of Foerster s
carrer
of a composer and
painter. The biographical data include times and places of Foerster s stays in the country
(both abroad and home) and their reflections in onomatopoeic or judst visual forms. The text
of the introductory study on Foerster s visual works of art features his youth
(Foerster
was
born on
30
December
1859),
the years
1893-1902
spent in Hamburg, the years
1903-1918
when
Foerster
lived and worked in Vienna, and the period from
1918
until his death
(29
May
1951).
The study focuses on the direct and later fading influence of Foerster s brother Viktor,
a trained painter, especially in the beginnings of Foerster s creative career, and
subsequently on the spiritual source of musical inventions in his life of a person of integrity, in
which he humbly worked towards success in both spheres by transciribing mutually
connected higher worlds. In his continuous career filled with self-sacrificing work for
professional institutions and foundations, which he headed or where he worked (Prague
Conservatory, Philosophical Faculty of Charles University, Czech Academy of Sciences and
Arts, The
Hlávka
Foundation), there was not a single moment when his intellectual and
artistic activity would cease. A special chapter is represented by his life in
Lužany
near
Přeštice,
where in the years
1931-1938
he felt his best since he found peace for his work of
a composer and painter. He continued to produce creative work in the
1940s
in his old age in
Prague
-
Strašnice
as well as at the last place of his residence in
Nový Veštec
near
Stará
Boleslav,
where he died committed to God and to the freedom of the Czech nation. The
attached list of paintings and drawings and the study with evaluation conclusion refer both to
the documentation and basic sources, which in necessary detail complement the portrait of
this unique personality and are an ispiration for our contemporary times.
