SUMMARY
The aim of this publication is to present the phenomenon of screenings
(pro¬
věrky)
and the concomitant purges
(čistky)
in the context of the Commu¬
nist regime in Czechoslovakia from the takeover in February
1948
to the
handover in late
1989.
A number of works, some of them scholarly, some
of them eye-witness accounts, have been published about the individual wa¬
ves of screenings, but there is still no comprehensive work about how they
were carried out in these four decades. The current publication discusses
the screenings and purges in chronological order, and also as a phenomenon
whose importance for the operation of the Communist regime goes beyond
the statistics about the number of victims of specific events.
Attention is paid to Party screenings in
1948, 1950,
and
1970
and also
to the waves of screenings among students in
1948,
screenings for reasons
of class background and political beliefs in
1958,
and assessments of people
who were not Party members at the work place for ideological reasons
in
1970.
Though this does not exhaust the topic of screenings, it is still
a representative selection.
The authors of the individual articles have tried to present screenings
not merely as a mechanical process in which the results were known ahead
of time and the actors were merely performing assigned tasks. The authors
seek to demonstrate that there was a certain unpredictability to the screenings,
which, on the one hand, mobilized the Communist Party to extraordinary
activity, but, on the other hand, did not always achieve the anticipated re¬
sults. At the same time, the authors also see the screenings as a test of power,
which showed the extent to which society was ready and willing to accept
Party hegemony in public life. In that regard, the screenings are exceptiona¬
lly important, something which can also be clearly deduced from the indi¬
vidual essays. From its experience of the screenings, the Party also worked
out, perfected, and, for the whole forty years of its rule, made use of the cad¬
re file of every employee in the comprehensive cadre system.
