a regional scientific magazine in process of political
and historical changes.
This work deals with functioning of a Polish regional scientific magazine
within years
1956-2011
in then existing country, especially in terms of the scientific
and cultural freedom in which it existed. The quarterly
Płock
Notes came
into existence in July of
1956
in the time of changes happening in Poland at that
time. Some
Płock
public acivists, the members of
Płock
Scientific Society and
The Committee of Inquiry of
Płock
Settlement and Progress
—
Tadeusz Gierzyński
and
Kazimierz
Askanas
managed to create the
Płock
Notes magazine. It focused
the local intelligentsia coming from different occupations and social groups of various
viewpoints. The Society members received the magazine thanks to their member fee
and also published there. The magazine helped create the regional awareness
by both establishing social bounds and publishing vital issues for the
Płock
Masovia.
Stimulating the local elite as well as undertaking research and publishing them,
the quarterly had a great influence on creating social output and sharing it with
the next generations, which proves how important role it possessed in terms
of culture. It is also visible in the articles topics. In the period under research
the biggest number of them dealt with science, education, culture and history.
Summing up, it can be claimed that in Poland after
1956
a certain range
of freedom in science and culture was created. In
Płock
Masovia it was seen both
in emerging and progress of a local magazine of scientific character. In the following
years it improved scientifically and also gained considerable independence.
It contradicts the existence of totalitarian system in Poland after
1956.
