ĐURO LJIKAR
SUMMARY
Nowadays, when the
Ruthenians
in Petrovci mark the 175th
anniversary of their settlement and life in this area, here in the Srijem-
Slavonija plain, they have something to show to the world. And not only
them, but all the
Ruthenians
who some time later moved mostly from
Ruski Krstur
and Kucura to
Mikluševci, Rajevo Selo, Gunja, Andrijaševci,
Piškurevci, Andrijevci
and in smaller groups to some other places in
Slavonija
and
Posavina.
They moved to this area due to abject poverty in
their homeland. They hoped to find what they needed, and that was land
and labour, because the tradition had already proven that with land and
labour life could get joyful, more and more every day. It had come true.
Ruthenians
grew their estate bigger every year and in the end they were
no longer servants and day-labourers on the landed proprietors land but
became landowners themselves. Their love for land and livestock helped
them make improvements. As they brought something innovative and
contemporary from
Ruski
Krstur and Kucura they were able to produce
better crops than the natives from their fields.
Ruthenians
in the new neighbourhood evidently differed from their
native neighbours. They were different by language, religion, the way they
farmed land, the way they built houses, the way they managed households,
also by clothes. However, it is known that the
Ruthenians
actually survived
due to their religion. The Greek Catholic Church and education in mother
tongue were two stone fortresses that have defended Ruthenian ethnic
identity for years.
I named the book LET S NOT FORGET
-
THE
RUTHENIANS
IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA . It is not a history of the Ruthenians,
but a chronology of developments, events, life, their descent and everything
else that has happened to the Ruthenians in this specific geographic area.
It s not a history, it could only in a certain way be an outline to scientists,
historians in their detailed research of historic aspects of this phenomenon.
By saying ^phenomenon I mean the facts that draw attention of many
world scientists, because the Ruthenians have lived, worked, created,
or, in a word, they have developed for more than
260
years despite the

fact that all this time they have been surrounded by different nations and
different cultures. They ghettoized themselves in some sense, preserving
their ethnic identity and they have managed to preserve it. At the same
time they participated in local communities, they worked together with
their neighbours, and in the past few decades they married regardless the
ethnicity, religion, language and culture of their spouses.
Ruthenians
accepted this socio-political community as their new
homeland, their new home, but they never forgot their old homeland from
which their ancestors immigrated.
The book LET S NOT FORGET-THE
RUTHENIANS
IN THE
REPUBLIC OF CROATIA encompasses the time from the oldest
available records up to date. It is divided into several chapters describing
specific subjects of social and economic life.
1.
Chapter The
Ruthenians
presents standpoints of our eminent
experts, historians and others. They all want to give an answer to the
question:
Who are we and who do we belong to?
Ruthenians (Rusnaks)
-
(Ruthenians/Rusyns/Rusins/Ruthenes and
Russians, Ruthenian/Rusyn, pi. Ruthenians/Rusyns)
-
are by origin the
Slavs from south Russia,
Galicia
and
Bukovina
in Austria and northeast
Hungary. In Russian the Ruthenians/Rusyns were called Little Russians
and in Hungarian dialect of the
Ruthenian
language
-
Rusnaks.
Most parties involved in this debate agree with the mentioned thesis
and there is no dilemma about it.
However, when it comes to the question to whom we belong , there
are several different explanations. Some claim that the
Ruthenians
are older
ethnonym for Ukrainians, which would mean that we are both
Ruthenians
and Ukrainians, and that our mother tongue,
Ruthenian
language, is a
dialect of the Ukrainian language.
Others claim that the Ruthenians are a separate branch of Slavic
people which have lived in that area for
260
years. Separated from their
motherland Homjica, for different reasons they have lived, earned and
developed in completely different conditions from those in the homeland.
356
ĐURO LJIKAR
Dr. Havrijil
Kostelník
well illustrates the mentioned thesis:
By the name of Ruthenians/Rusyns (Rusnaks) , if no apposition
is added to the word, our
Ruthenians
comprehend themselves, that is, the
Ruthenians
who have lived in the lower parts of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire
(Bačka
and
Srijem),
who come from
Ruski Krstur
or Kucura.
Ever since the
Ruthenians
migrated from the upper Hungary to
Bačka,
they have lived separated from the majority of the
Ruthenian
people.
During that time (it was more than
150
years) they had no cultural or
political connections to those parts where in our Empire lives the majority
of the
Ruthenian
people.
Speaking about the
Ruthenian
language, the following statement may
be acceptable:
The language of the Yugoslavian
Ruthenians
belongs to rather small
number of people. Due to that fact the linguists assume it as a micro
language. But in the view of the functionality of the
Ruthenian
language in
all aspects of private and public life, standardization in accordance with the
linguistic principles, social status and stylistic differentiation, it is obvious
that it is a standardized Slavic language and not a dialect of some language
or a mixture of more languages. It is important to know:
1.
that the
Ruthenian
language was formed in the Carpathian area
where East and West Slavic languages meet;
2.
there is no need to pretentiously emphasize that the
Ruthenian
language by its features belongs more to the East Slavic or West Slavic
languages, it suffices to conclude that it comprehends the features of both
East and West Slavic languages;
2.
In order to give a better orientation, the chapter Geographic
Position describes the position of the
Vukovar
plain. It is situated in the
far east area in the Republic of Croatia, and it stretches along the Danube
River. The plain was formed back in the Pleistocene, it is a loess terrace
with many hills and valleys, made of typical loess.
Natural features
-
Although this area has features of a plain, it
consists of three different parts:
1.
Loess
plain is the most extensive part of the region,

-

2.
On the east gentle slopes of
Fruška
gora
lean to the plain, and that
is the highest point of the region with
294
m
altitude.
3.
North-west part of the region belongs to the
Vučan
valley. It is
known for the lowermost area
(80-90
meters) covered with the Holocene
deposits.
Climate
-
Continental climate is prevalent in the area.
Soil
-
In pedological sense black earth prevails.
Due to natural features of soil this area was of a great social importance
in the past. In the time of the Slavic migration to the south, Croats inhabited
this area. In the middle of the 10th century the majority of them were ousted
more to the south by the Hungarians, who came to this area from the north
and ruled until the arrival of the Turks in
1526.
At that time the area was
a zone of Hungarian and Byzantium cross-interests. From
1526
to
1537
the Turks occupied not only the
Vukovar
district but the entire
Slavonija.
After the defeat of the Turks, Austria peopled this area with new settlers:
Germans, Slovaks, Czechs, Serbs from
Baranja,
Bosnia and
Mačva,
and
Croats who were not under the Turkish rale.
3.
The chapter
Vukovar
Area and Settlement of the
Ruthenians
encompasses the period of the oldest found and verified records, briefly
depicts the area before the arrival of the
Ruthenians,
their settlement and the
first decades of their life here. We learn from the records that the national
structure of the population was very heterogeneous. There were migrations
after each war. People were leaving or coming depending on who won the
war. An accurate census of the Serbs in Petrovci and
Mikluševci
who lived
there before the arrival of the
Ruthenians
is also available. The property
status records reveal that they were very poor people and that in the two
villages there were rather a small number of inhabitants living in about
30-50
households. The inhabitants at that time primarily farmed the land
and did not have much livestock.
Due to the lack of arable land and hard life in Krstur and Kucura
district, the
Ruthenians
decided to cross the Danube River. They first came
as migrant workers, and then, when they earned some money, they bought
houses and they worked cultivating the land of the landed proprietors . It

Church records show that the new settlers found
very important to have their church and school, their priests and teachers.
Ruthenians
were settling in Petrovci and
Mikluševci
in bigger groups and
the biggest massive settling was recorded in the period from
1870
to
1890,
when more than a thousand
Ruthenians
settled in the mentioned villages.
The
Ruthenians
from
Ruski Krstur
and Kucura mostly settled in
Srijem
and
Slavonija
and a small number of the
Ruthenians
came from Hornjica.
Majority of the settlers were farmers but with them came a few craftsmen.
4.
Deeper in
Slavonija
and Posavina-Rajevo
Selo, Andrijaševci,
Gunja,
Durici,
Piškorevci, Andrijevci
and other villages the settlement
of the
Ruthenians
took place in the end of the 19th century. There was
no massive settling here, but one or two families bought farms and land
around the mentioned villages at low price.
Ruthenians
were traditionally
diligent and they wanted to create better life conditions and future for
themselves and their children. Shortly they elevated their living standards
but they also had to lose something in the process. It is best described in
the words:
Long time ago, right after the settlement, in a small, poor bundle the
Ruthenians
brought no property, but in their souls and hearts they brought
with them the treasure of cultural heritage. As they sown wheat and corn
seeds in the furrows of the
Slavonija
plain, they also sown the seed of rich
and beautiful customs of a small people in the garden of life, their songs
and dances and religious rituals and rites. And they were very willing and
diligent in both fields. Sacks of wheat and wagons of corn gave them joy
for they gave them life and a possibility to buy more land. But they were
also happy when, during the breaks from work, they could sing their songs
and dance their dances, at weddings, spinning-bees, caroling visits and
when soaking girls with water, in the exact same way as their brothers
in
Srijem
and
Bačka.
It has been like that for years, nice and cheerful.
Native inhabitants liked the
Ruthenian
parish fair (kirbaj) because they
had an opportunity to see our beautiful national costumes. However, in the
fifties the seed of our culture started dying away both here and in the area
where a small number of
Ruthenians
lived surrounded by other customs
and tradition, languages and cultures. It hasn t died yet, but.
..
5.
Church and Religion is a chapter which confirms that in the
new oountty the
Ruthenians
had a great respect for the church and their

Greek Catholic religion. Many of our authors studied the phenomenon of
religion emphasizing that the church and religion in the south Hungary
had a great importance for keeping the
Ruthenians
from ethnic downfall
or assimilation.
Hence the citations of some authors:
Havrijil Kosteljnik: Religion in our people assimilated with the
ethnicity, ethnicity with the religion, one supported and helped the other.
Janko Ramač:
It proves that the
Ruthenian
priests, who at that time
took the lead in the fight for ethnic rights of the
Ruthenians
in
Bačka
and
Srijem,
understood that as long as the
Ruthenians
in those areas retain their
language and, it goes without saying, their name, they would survive. Except
the language, the very name
Ruthenian,
by which the
Ruthenians
were
recognized by others in the area, and by which they called themselves, was
a powerful factor enabling the
Ruthenians
to keep from ethnic downfall.
Our grandfathers were used to practice religion and they wanted to stick to
the church when they left their mountainous and wooded homeland where
they had their own church.
They took this tradition to
Bačka, Srijem
and later to
Slavonija
and
Posavina.
They built churches and established parishes. The first parish for
the
Ruthenians
in
Srijem, Slavonija
and
Posavina
was established in
1836
in Petrovci, and it had its branch offices in
Mikluševci
and other villages.
Immediately after the settlement in Rajevo
Selo
and
Piškorevci,
parishes
were also established in those villages.
The most recent parishes for the
Ruthenians
were established
in
Vukovar
and
Vinkovci.
In all parishes sermon is held in
Ruthenian
language.
6.
During
260
years of living in
Vojvodina, Srijem, Slavonija
and
Posavina
the
Ruthenians
have had several models of organizing their
cultural, educational and ethnic life. Despite its fewness and not always
good conditions for preservation of national identity, our ethnic community
has not only sustained but also has been developing. Some models have
been imposed by historical circumstances, others chosen by the
Ruthenian
communily
oc
its representatives, and some have been imposed by the
social community.
360
ĐURO LJIKAR
Life in one country and its social and political system have significantly
determined the models of organization of cultural, educational and ethnic
life of the
Ruthenian
community.
We hadn t had any organized cultural life in this area until the World
War I. After the war, at the initiative of the Greek Catholic clergy and partly
teachers, the
Ruthenian
Peoples Educational Society was established
and its primary task was to educate all
Ruthenians
in many ways. Due
to such efforts, choirs were formed in
Mikluševci
and Petrovci, drama
groups started its work in the thirties of the last century and folklore dance
ensembles started a few years before the World War II.
After the war the Central
Ruthenian
Cultural and Publishing Institute
with its field offices took over the care about the cultural and educational
activities.
In the fifties cultural clubs were founded in Petrovci and
Mikluševci.
Educational institutions started to use mother tongue. The two cultural
clubs worked successfully and were the best representatives of our tradition
among other nations. A few hundred of theater plays and folk dances have
been staged, even more
Ruthenian
songs have been sung at various cultural
events and festivals. Our cultural clubs have performed and still perform
throughout Croatia as well as abroad. Beside the mentioned, cultural clubs
exist in
Vukovar, Osijek, Vinkovci,
Zagreb,
Rijeka,
and last year one
was founded in
Raj evo Selo.
Their goal is always the same
-
to preserve
cultural heritage.
In the seventies cultural workers, with a help of the social community,
initiated cultural events
Mikluševci
and
Petrovačko zvono
which persisted
to date. In other villages of
Srijem, Slavonija
and
Posavina
with a smaller
number of
Ruthenians
there were no
Ruthenian
cultural clubs. However
cultural activities were present in
Raj evo Selo
and
Piškurevci
within the
village cultural clubs.
7.
Social and Economic Conditions have been always of great
importance for the
Ruthenians.
Due to the fact that during
150
years of
their existence in the Srijem-Slavonija plain the
Ruthenians
have been
oriented on farming and livestock, they tended to own more land and to
have more livestock in the stables and pigsties. They were diligent and
easily adjusted to modern production. The facts prove it because people
NEKA SE NE ZABORAVI
-

from our villages held records in farming and livestock production. Very
good crops enabled better living standard. Through voluntary local tax
they financed construction of many objects which today serve the same
purpose as before
30
or
40
years.
Unfortunately, the current situation is different. The village population
age increases, the number of inhabitants has decreased, which can be seen
from the enclosed statistics, and in some villages in
Slavonija
and
Posavina
Ruthenian
language is no longer in use. Some
Ruthenians
have assimilated
and some have moved to bigger cities. Only silent tombs in cemeteries
have remained as witnesses of a nice era, when
Ruthenian
soul was full
of optimism for better future of their children. Today, some of them are
already forgotten and there is no one to put flowers on their graves once a
year.
8.
The last chapter Our Prominent People briefly presents ten
Ruthenians
who have made great contributions to our ethnic community
with their work and dedication. The most meritorious people come from
clergy, as well as from culture and education field.
