Tarusa is one of the oldest Russian towns in the region of the Upper Oka
river. The earliest records link it to Grand Prince Yuri, the youngest son of
Prince St. Michael of Chernigov. According to the ancient chronicles, Yuri in¬
herited Tarusa in
1245.
The central archaeological site in Tarusa is an ancient settlement, located in
the north part of the town. Topographically, it is a typical promontory settle¬
ment with a trapezoidal plan, fitting into the local relief and covering an area of
approximately one hectare. Ancient authors describe this place as the 'Citadel
of Old Tarusa'. Its eastern side adjoins a village which originally served as the
trading quarter and covered ten hectares. The cultural layer of the settlement
and trading quarter lies between
0,5
metres and
2,0
metres depth.
Most of the finds come from this settlement and date from the X to
XIV
centuries. The settlement was where long term archaeological studies of the
ever expanding city cemetery were undertaken.
The collection of these finds from Tarusa varies from complete objects to
fragments made from metal, ferrous and non-ferrous, bone, clay and stone.
These can be divided into six groups according to their functionality:

Armour,
2)
Sets of horsemen's belts and sets of bridles,
3)
Horse armour,
4)
Jewellery and
costume remnants,
5)
Domestic appliances including ceramics, both handmade
and produced on a potter's wheel,
6)
Coins. Objects of Christian piety should
also be especially noted.
Analysis of archaeological material shows that the first settlement was
founded by Slavic tribes in the second half of the X century and it has been con¬
tinuously inhabited ever since. In
1392,
Tarusa fell under the power of the
Grand Prince of Moscow and soon lost its political independence. |
