T. .S- Eliot
finds
the poer,
between the ages of forty-two and forcy-four, reckoning
Avith the strict implications or His Christian faith for his
life, his
viorie,
and his poetry.
TThe letters between Eliot and his associates, family and
friends
—
his correspondents range from the Archbishop
of York: and the Americam philosopher l^aul Elmer JVIore
to the writers Virginia W/oolf, Herbert Read, Hugh
MacDiarmid, and Ralph Hodgson
—
serve to illuminate
the ways in. which his Anglo-Catholic convictions could,
at times, prove a self-chastising and even alienating
force. Anyone who has been moving among intellectual
circles and comes to the Church, may experience an odd
and rather exhilarating feeling
oř
isolation/ he remarks.
Notwithstanding, he becomes ftilly involved in doctrinal
controversy: he espouses the Church as an are
їла
of
discipline and order.
In.
r
930
he produces what will become one of his most
adrnired works, .A.sh-Wecifiesciciy, the first long poem to be
published it
ґїле
walce
of his conversion to
Anglica rii
s rn
three years previously.
1
h i s
allusive and complicated
work o£ religious striving is of
tei !
referred to
as
Eliot s
cortvei-sioti poem : he called it a deliberate modern Vita
Nuova .
It is
iii
1930
tocy that he publishes the beautifully
-
yearning, poignant Ivliirinu, written for the Wriel series, as
is the politically satirical Triumphal A/liirch, which follows
into pamphlet publication the following year.
Eliot s relationship with his wire, Vivien, continues to be
turbulent, and ar times desperate, as her mental health
deteriorates aiid the commimicarion between husband
and wife threatens, at the coming end or the year, to
break down completely. / t the close of this volume
Eliot will accept a visiting professorship at Harvard
University, which will take him away from England
and Vivien tor the academic year
1932 — 33.
