Summary
The Golden King and the Poor
Count
Ottokár
II of
Bohemio
and Rudolph I of
Habsburg
in Historical Tradition
The conflict between
Ottokár
II and Rudolph I of
Habsburg
is one of the driving moments of
common Czech and Austrian history. As their fight was accompanied by strong propaganda
on both sides, it was subject to political exploitation since the Middle Ages. The death of the
King of Bohemia in the Battle of Diirnkrut and the subsequent period of Brandenburg admin¬
istration of the Czech Lands started, according to deep-rooted notions, the series of Czech his¬
torical disasters, completed by the Battle of
Lipany
and the Battle of White Mountain. For the
Habsburgs, on the other hand, the victory meant the beginning of their dynastic rise, rounded
off by the domination of a large part of Europe and the attainment of the title of Holy Roman
Emperor. The present study focuses on this fundamental dichotomy in the understanding of
the common past, mapping the changing interpretations of the conflict in historiography, lit¬
erature, drama and visual art, with a special emphasis on the 19th century. Thus it builds upon
the author's older studies dedicated to the same theme as treated by medieval and early mod¬
ern sources.
A deeper knowledge of the exploitation of the myth of Rudolph and
Ottokar in
the period
of the Czech national revival can contribute to our understanding of the interaction between
the Czech and Austrian view of the common past, and hopefully also uncover some sources of
our stereotypes about our Central European neighbours. It can also enrich our understanding
131

of the inherent dynamics and changing values of the Czech revivalist movement, whose view
of history we still partly share.
In medieval sources, the core of the image of
Ottokar was
his military prowess and royal
qualities.
Ottokár
was a keen follower of the ideal of the pious and just ruler (rex iustus). The
Habsburg
propaganda countered this positive portrait by presenting the unfavourable image
of a tyrant and usurper of Imperial fiefs, contrasting it with the depiction of Rudolph as a God-
appointed defender of law and order. The legitimacy of Rudolph's Roman election, accompa¬
nied by divine favour on the battlefield and confirmed by handing over Austria and the Alpine
countries to Rudolph's sons as a fief, formed the basis of the
Habsburg
dynastic myth, and, in
this way, an argument to support the justness of the
Habsburg
rule in the Holy Roman Empire.
The presentation of Rudolph of
Habsburg
as the saviour of the Empire in a time of interregnum
distorted the interpretation of common Czech and Austrian history as well as the history of
the Empire. Historians found it difficult to overcome this concept which, to a certain extent,
influences the understanding of the history of the
ІЗ'11
century even today.
Since the Middle Ages, chroniclers commented, in particular, on Ottokar's attitude towards
aristocracy, and on the Czech-German antagonism. Since the chronicle of so-called
Dalimil,
Czech authors blamed
Ottokár
for excessively supporting German colonists. On the other
hand, they glorified the power of this "Iron and Golden King", who could be defeated only by
treason. The motif of betrayal in the decisive battle was convenient also for the pro-Habsburg
writers, because they presented it, in line with medieval notions, as divine punishment for
Ottokar's pride and tyranny. During the reign of Charles IV, the motif of treason found its way
into Czech chronicles, too. Authors linked with the court of Charles criticised the misguided
ambitions of high aristocracy, presenting their alleged share in the king's death as a betrayal
of the Czech nation.
These medieval motifs came alive in 19th-century literature and visual art. Czech patriots
reacted to celebrations of Rudolph I by commemorating the rise of the Czech state during the
reign of
Ottokár
IL
For them, the successes of this king were a source of national pride, and his
death was a warning against national disunity caused by Czech nobility (embodied by
Závis
of
Falkenštejn
and
Milota
of
Dědice),
who ignored national interests. These interests were de¬
fended by lower gentry and townspeople
-
the only barriers against German expansionism.
In contrast, Austrian historiography and literature still adhered to the traditional interpre¬
tation of the beginnings of the common history, overlooking Ottokar's contribution to the de¬
velopment of the Austrian Lands and depicting him as a tyrant.
František Palacký
confronted
this concept with scholarly argumentation, presenting
Ottokár
as a reformer who raised the
Czech Lands to a higher level of civilization and whose knightly qualities were respected even
by his opponents. The focus of
Palacký
s
attention was the German colonisation as a radical
change in Czech history. Although Ottokar's support of the German element led to his suc¬
cesses, it also brought about his downfall. Therefore
Palacký
argues that the king should have
given more consideration to the possible consequences of his steps. With regard to Ottokar's
attitude towards aristocracy,
Palacký
acknowledged the kings consistent legal approach. He
replaced the distorted image of a tyrant with the portrait of a ruler whose aim was the good of
the state, and who asserted the same law against all persons regardless of their status.
German and Austrian scholars and journalists reacted to
Palacký's
ideas with severe po¬
lemics, shifting the focus to the issue of colonization. After
1848,
which brought the final
separation of the Czech and German national movement, the main topic became the German
132
Summary
contribution to the development of the Czech Lands. Thus the traditional motif of the fight
between the Slavonic and Germanic cultural sphere became exacerbated. At the same time, the
Czech patriots' attitude towards Hungarians became more radical. Their defeat at the Battle of
Kressenbrunn,
as well as the part they played in Rudolph's victory at
Dürnkrut,
had long been
the source of Czech invectives, which sharpened after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise. In
this way, Czechs nursed their complexes about the inability of their politicians to push through
the agenda of national emancipation.
In the second half of the 19th century, the transformed social and political conditions meant
that the Czech society turned its attention to topics which better corresponded to its feelings
and aims
-
Hussitism and the corporate state
(Ständestaat).
Since some traditional interpreta¬
tions were backed by historians, too, the
Ottokár
theme continued to be conserved in over¬
simplifications. The motif of the Czech-German conflict was still present, as well as that of the
betrayal of national interests. Therefore
Ottokár
became firmly rooted in the Czech histori¬
cal awareness as a dazzling king, who, however, favoured the Germans too much and whose
death was brought about by treacherous Czech lords. Thus the Battle of
Dürnkrut
symbolically
started the series of Czech national disasters. For the Austrian monarchy, Rudolph's victory
still served as a significant element of the state identity. However, the transformed social and
political conditions became evident there, too. At the beginning of the 20th century, the effort
to find a unifying idea for the multinational monarchy in reverence for the dynasty and the
state finally became an anachronism.
