Coloring the Cosmetic World:
Using Pigments in Decorative Cosmetic Formulations Edwin B. Faulkner
Our world is primarily one of color. Color is not merely associated with one s visual
response to what one sees, be it a person, an object, or even something taken regularly for
granted such as the sky above. Color also plays a unique role in our perception of texture,
nuance, intention, and purpose, and is often, as in the case of decorative cosmetics, used
as a means toward emotional and aspirational response.

Edwin B. Faulkner is global business director of cosmetics and personal
care for Sun Chemical Corporation. He holds a degree in chemistry from
Widener University and is presently an adjunct faculty member at the

University of Cincinnati, where he teaches in the Cosmetic Science Masters
Program. He is also an instructor for both the Center for Professional Advancement in
New Brunswick, New Jersey, and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, where he serves
as the color expert on the Ask the Expert section of its website. Ed is currently active
in the Colored Pigments Manufacturers Association (CPMA).
