PREFACE
T HIS SECOND EDITION OF CONTEMPORARY MORAL ARGUMENTS IS TRUE TO THE
MISSION OF THE FIRST BUT HAS TAKEN TO HEART A FEW LESSONS FROM THE
TEACHERS WHO USE IT. FROM THE BEGINNING, THE ASSUMPTION UNDERLYING THIS
TEXT HAS BEEN THAT MUCH OF THE SATISFACTION AND UNDERSTAND- ING TO BE
GAINED FROM STUDYING (AND TEACHING) APPLIED ETHICS COMES FROM ARGUMENTS-
SPECIFICALLY THE MANY WELL-KNOWN ARGUMENTS THAT HAVE PROVOKED THE MOST
DEBATE AND REFLECTION ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES. WE KNOW THAT IN EACH OF
THE MAJOR MORAL DISPUTES- FROM ABORTION TO TERRORISM TO WORLD
POVERTY-THERE ARE CERTAIN INFLUENTIAL ARGUMENTS THAT HAVE BECOME
MUST-SEE LANDMARKS ON THE ETHICAL TERRAIN. CONTEMPORARY MORAL ARGUMENTS
ZEROES IN ON MANY OF THESE KEY ARGUMENTS AND USES THEM AS GUIDEPOSTS AND
ENTRY POINTS FOR THE TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY READINGS THAT DISCUSS
THEM. THIS CONTROLLING IDEA RESULTS IN A CLEAR ORGANIZATION THAT PUTS
ARGUMENTS AT THE CENTER OF ATTENTION: THE BOOK'S READINGS ARE SORTED
INTO 10 TOPICAL CHAPTERS, WITH THE READINGS WITHIN THOSE CHAPTERS
ORGANIZED BY ARGUMENT. EACH ARGUMENT IS INTRODUCED BY A BRIEFING THAT
(I) SKETCHES THE ARGUMENT, (2) PROVIDES ETHICAL AND CONCEPTUAL
BACKGROUND FOR IT, AND (3) REVIEWS SOME OF THE MAIN PHILOSOPHICAL
RESPONSES TO IT. AFTER THE BRIEFING COME TWO TO FOUR ESSAYS PRESENTING
THE CLASSIC STATEMENT OF THE ARGUMENT, CRITIQUES AND DEFENSES OF IT, AND
DISCUSSIONS OF RELATED DEBATES. EACH CHAPTER HAS AN EXTENSIVE
INTRODUCTION TO THE ISSUE, TEXT BOXES SUPPLYING BASIC FACTS ON THE
ISSUE, AND ESSAY QUESTIONS FOLLOWING EACH ARGUMENT SECTION. THE MAIN
BENEFITS OF THIS APPROACH ARE THAT (1) IT HELPS STUDENTS FOCUS ON
ARGUMENTA- TION, WHERE MUCH OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL WORK GETS DONE, (2) IT
GIVES THEM CLEAR POINTS OF REFERENCE FOR NAVIGATING MATERIAL IN WHICH
THEY OFTEN GET LOST, AND (3) IT HELPS THEM UNDER- STAND AND APPRECIATE
THE ETHICAL DIALECTIC-THE INTERPLAY OF ARGUMENT AND COUNTERARGU- MENT
AMONG ARTICLES AND AUTHORS. IN SHORT, IT SHOWS THEM BY EXAMPLE HOW WE DO
ETHICS. MAIN FEATURES . IN-DEPTH TREATMENT OF 27 IMPORTANT ARGUMENTS IN
16 MAJOR ISSUES OF APPLIED ETH- ICS, INVESTIGATED BY 68 READINGS (PLUS 7
SELECTIONS IN THE INTRODUCTORY CHAPTERS). THE ISSUES INCLUDE ABORTION,
DRUGS AND AUTONOMY, EUTHANASIA AND ASSISTED SUICIDE, GENETIC ENGINEERING
AND CLONING, CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, WAR, TERRORISM, TORTURE, POR- NOGRAPHY,
FREE SPEECH, HEALTH CARE, ANIMAL RIGHTS, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, AND
GLOBAL JUSTICE. * TWO SUBSTANTIAL INTRODUCTORY CHAPTERS RELATING MORAL
PROBLEMS TO ETHICAL CONCEPTS, MORAL THEORY, AND CRITICAL REASONING.
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCES ETHICS, SPELLS OUT THE FUNDAMENTALS, CRITIQUES
