Background and Resonances of his Personality and Activities
Summary
The present book has its object and approaches defined in relation with the
impressive array of research works dedicated to Father Paisius of Hilandar and
his book The Slavo-Bulgarian History
(1762).
This exposition makes no claims
for monographic completeness, orderliness and comprehensiveness, in the spirit
of the classical notions of this genre. What underlies its purposes is, above all,
the ambition to push forward the knowledge about this man-of-letters deeds
and their various aspects, to a higher level in close connection with its essence.
There are two main conceptual markers: background (context) and
resonances , that outline the parameters of the interpreted issues, without
having their content fields strictly regulated and differentiated in the composition
of the book. The logic of their overlapping is a function of the presumption
of their having or having not been studied, which also determines the genre
and stylistic image of the very texts. In general, the epitomizations of any of
these two aspects render the picture more persuasive and take their place in the
processes of internal literary continuity.
The first parts of the book reconstruct moments from the life of Fr. Paisius
during the time when he writes The Slavo-Bulgarian History. Newly reported
archives offer description of the monastic environment on Mount
Athos
in the
19th century and its immediate and close surroundings. Fr. Paisius s positions
relating to distinguished reformers and acquaintances of his among the monastics
on the Holy Mountain are scrutinized and diverse versions thereof are offered.
He is compared mainly with Paisius Velichkovsky and
Eugenios
Voulgaris. A
new viewing angle is employed to reconsider the personality of the Schema-
monk priest Spyridon of Gabrovo and his History, to activate the interest toward
Fr. Paisius s activities in the
Rila
Monastery after the 1820s.
The parts thereafter include texts that exposit the transition from the
classical-type copies of The Slavo-Bulgarian History to its different versions
(revised, assembled editions and compilations, etc.) in the changed culturological
conditions during the first decades of the 19th century. To this end, some ten
various copies of the History were given an analytical reading (The Bolgrad,
Samokov, Bashkyoi, Transfiguration Monastery,
Bela

riev, Panagyurishte ones, etc.). In the case of some of these, this was the first
critical reading. For the specificities of their reception in the North Western parts
of Bulgaria, as well as the Turnovo area, are given comments.
On the basis of several extant copies available to us (the Bashkyoi, Bolgrad,
Chertkov etc.) in the Paisian study there appeared an independent circle, which
is interpreted under the revelatory title The Slavo-Bulgarian History
and its
readings among the Bulgarian immigrants of Bessarabia.
The present work is concluded with a chapter where the reflection of Fr.
Paisius s ideas is studied in the literary world of the next generations through the
decades of the Bulgarian Renaissance. Thus, writers starting with Hieromonk
Neofit
of
Rila,
followed by Vasil
Aprílov,
archimandrite
Neofit Bozveli
through
Hristo Botev, and embodying the motto In the Paisian way without Paisius,
enrich with more sophisticated forms the activities of the internal literary
continuity.
