The Peace Treaties from the Beginning of 17th Century

the
Habsburg
Monarchy concluded two important peace
treaties. The first was the agreement about the conditions of ending
of the
Bocskai
uprising, the second was the peace treaty with the
Ottoman Empire about the ending of the Fifteen Years War.
Bocskai
already agreed in advance with the Turks, that the both peace trea¬
ties have come into the validity in the same time. But after long
negotiations with the imperial party he agreed that at first will be
there will be concluded treaty between the Emperor and him, then
between the Emperor and sultan. By the conclusion of the treaties
after their approval by the Emperor passed nearly two years
,
because
the Emperor Rudolph refused to ratify peace with the Ottoman Em¬
pire, when the
Ottomas
began to interfere to the situation in Hun¬
garian Kindom. Both peace treaties were ratified by the Archduke
Matthew, when he successfully dethroned the Emperor Rudolph as
the King of Hungary and he won the same dignity.

and Socio-cultural Relations.

Within the context of mentioned facts at the conclusion, it can be
stated that the coronation of King Matthew II. presents one of the
important milestones, not only in the history of the Hungarian,
but also the whole
Habsburg
Monarchy. It integral belongs to the
contemporary context of the complicated political, military and so¬
cial processes in Hungarian Kingdom at the turn of 16th and

cen¬
tury. During its preparation, but also during the coronation were

markedly demonstrated traditional hungarian elements, which
were communicated also on the international level. Is
concernes
not only the events related to the Hungarian Crown, but also to
some parts of the coronation ceremony. As a result of efforts to keep
the
Habsburg
dynasty on the throne of Hungary, on the Matthew s
coronation was accepted in compromise way number of hungarian
political, cultural and national and state traditions. Exceptional¬
ity of the coronation of King Matthew lies also in the fact that sev¬
eral of the mentioned phenomena later preserved their vitality and
long-time historical continuity as well. Early-Modern Bratislava,
as the capital of Hungarian Kingdom, became once again the scene
of the
Ínstense
international and intercultural communication.
The Genre Diversity of the Humanism Creation in the Slovakia
EvaFritnmová
In the territory of contemporary Slovakia reinassance and human¬
ism were in progress in two phases, namely under the impression
of Italian and late German reformational humanism for nearly two
centuries. The study deals with some their substantial phenomena,
which find the reflection in the written expression of scholars-hu¬
manists. To the fore is a classical philology, the development and
laicization of the education (of the schools and book-printing). The
Renaissance feature is a development of national languages, as well
as the formation of modern nations. On the example of chosen,
especially lesser-known works, the author points to their style dif¬
ferentiation. On the one hand there are the works, which are with
their style, form, language and content the imitation of the ancient
models, on the other hand there are the innovator works, thematic
focused on the present social, legal, political or scientific problems
of medicine or natural philosophy in the centre of attention. The
most there is a combination of several approaches to the creation.
The level and forwardness/advancement of the style and language
is in the close relation by personality of the author and by it, if is

concerned the traditional or new-created genre
.
Written documents
are the best testimony of this period. Works written by humanists
are from the literary and philological aspect notable and they have
also big historic value. Several styles, which in the period of Renais¬
sance and Humanism „became alive from Antique, but also those,
which were created at that time, have persisted to this time.
The Influence of Political and Social Situation
on the Development of
Holíč-Šaštín
County

The wild events of the 17th century, which were happening in the
Habsburg
Monarchy, marked also the development of the
Holíč-
Šaštín
county, which was situated in the area of middle and north¬
ern
Záhorie. Just
the geographic location of the county caused, that
during several anti-Habsburg uprisings became his territory the
leaving point of the rebels for their attacks into Moravia. The bases
had here not only the army of Stephen Bocskay, but also Gabriel
Bethlen
had left control a strategic territory in the Slovak-Mora¬
vian borderland of the corps. George
Rakoczy
I. founded the camp
near
Holíč,
which served him as a clue for his operations in the
western Slovakia. The area of
Záhorie
was not keep from the de¬
stroying of Turks despite of protection of the moutain range
Malé
Karpaty,
turkish troops after the fall of
Nové Zámky devastaverung
also some villages of
Holíč-Šaštín
county, about what say espe¬
cially Hutterite chronicles and records in the church registers. Not
only the rebels and the Turks effected to resident population the
property damage, many times it were also the imperial soldiers,
who robbed in villages of the county. At the same time the inhab¬
itants also suffered keeping of the imperial army, what depleted
them even more in materialistic way. The 17th century also brought
some changes in the religious composition of the county inhabit¬
ants and especially under the influence of the mandates against
the heterodoxies in Bohemia and Moravia, which caused arrival of

the non-Catholics also into the territory of
Holíč - Šaštín
county.
In this period were mainly the Hutterite villages reinforced, which
existed in the county already in the previous period.
Religious Situation in the Northern
Záhorie
in the Early
-
modern period

At the turn of the 16th and 17th century in the area of the northern
Záhorie
stretched, or at least with the part of its territory belonged
to it the counties of
Holíč, Šaštín, Branč, Korlátko, Ostrý Kameň,
Veľké
Levare,
Plavec
county and town
Skalica.
Landowners invited
their countrymen to their lands. To the part of the northern
Záho¬
rie,
what was considered for being a relatively safe territory against
Ottoman attacks, came the members of the other religions. On
the invitation by the owners of
Branč
county s Francis
Nyári
and
Holíč-Šaštín
county s Peter Bakics in
1545
resided at their estates the
Anabaptists from the neighbouring Moravia. To
Skalica
came also
the Croats because of the Turks. The Croats founded their commu¬
nity in the estates of the town in
1569.
The law from year
1548
solved
the problematic coexistence of
Skalica
inhabitants with the Jews
and prohibited the sale of immovables in the town to the Jews and
Moravians. In the second half of the 16th century all landowners,
with the exception of Bakics family inclined to Reformation. The
minute-book of visitation from the year
1561,
which informs about
the proprietary and religious situation in the parishes, is a testimo¬
ny of satisfactory circumstances. Priests despite of some discipli¬
nary offenses had still catholic thinking. Clerical corps, which were
professed to the Evangelical Church, associated to the
Branč-Plaveč
senioráte.

practised
the visitations in these corps in
1612.
Churches and also
clérigos
had
in several cases poor basic provision of the existence and the recep¬
tion of the parish to the Protestatism based on the will of the land¬
owner than from the religious motives. Members of the Unity of

Brethren chose for its location and also exile the northern
Záhorie.
They had to leave Bohemia and Moravia after
1627.
After agreement
to the Calvinism in
1644
and
1647
could also they act public as the
state recognized religion. When Peter
Pázmány
became the Arch¬
bishop, it began the period of intense recatholization. One of the
tasks of recatholization was a visit of parish with the goal to find
situation and correct possible deficiencies. In this region, the visi¬
tations were in the years
1626,1632
and
1634.
The visitations report
about the situation of churches and their creature comforts, about
the
clérigos,
believer and rectors, about their moral qualities and
material circumstances of the parsonage and school.
The Religious Situation in the South-western Slovakia
in the Light of the Visitations of
Pázmány.

Author devotes her study to the religious situation of part of the Brati¬
slava district, specifically from the clerical-organizing aspect of the
territory of Districtus Submontanus in the first half of 17th century.
This religious situation is reliably characterised to us by the canonical
visitations as
dependalbe
historical sources. Impulse for the realiza¬
tion of these canonical visitations in the first half of the 17th century
was from the archbiship of
Esztergom
Peter
Pázmány,
who was con¬
sidered for being the most important representative of the recatholi¬
zation in the Hungarian Kiongdom. Although this source is from the
provenience of Roman-Catholic Church, it also provides information
about the members of other confessions, what forms a picture of total
religious situation in the selected territory. In the territory of Distric¬
tus Submontanus lived the people of the different confessions
-
Ro¬
man-Catholics, Lutherans,
Calvinista
,
Anabaptists. Many
protestant
localities did not have their catholic priest, what was related also to
the lack of priests in the period stated. Religion in some localities de¬
pended also on landowner, but the principle „cuius
regio, eius religio
did not apply everywhere, as it also shows the author in this study.

study deals with the treatment and prevention of the diseases
in the court of one of the most significant aristocrats of Hungary
in 17th century, the Palatine
Nicolaus
Eszterházy
(1583 - 1645).
lhe
source to the organization of the health care on his Court became to
us different statements and mainly correspondence, where is pos¬
sible watch the interest of Palatine s health of family members or
also the instructions on the solution to the arose situation. He per¬
sonally consulted with the doctors what drugs should be used for
various health troubles. In the Court was a pharmacist, who was in
charge of production and preparation of the drugs specified by the
doctors and he probably also treated smaller diseases. The health
care was also not underestimated among members of the Court.
The control over it had the
magister
curiae, whose competences in this
area were controlled by instruction. He reported the diseases of the
members of Court to the pharmacist, barber or clerical persons pre¬
sented in the Court, which took care of them. A special chapter in
the area of health care of aristocrats were the stays in the thermal
medical spa, which were popular, not only because of the thera¬
peutic, but also relaxation aspect. The territory of contemporary
Slovakia provided several such localities, M.

and the spa
Großhöflein
and Tatzmannsdorf in Austria. In addition to alleviation in health
problems (especially in diseases of the alimentary tract) spa stays
were also the place of various social events and entertainment.
The Aristocratic Residences in
Orava
County in the

The territory of
Orava
county belonged to the marginal regions in
Hungary when applying the principles of renaissance architecture

in building the palaces and mansions by the county nobility. It was
caused by unfavourable conditions for agriculture and small lands
of nobility divided among several noblemen. The result was a long-
term
persistance
of tradition of the medieval types of residences in
the form of the block basement building till the end of the 17th cen¬
tury. The renaissance buildings were mainly associated with the
members of families that arrived in
Orava
in Thurzo family service
.
For their loyalty, they were given donations which were large lands
in the conditions of
Orava. In
this way, they gained the upper hand
in the material opportunities above the local still medieval fami¬
lies. That is why the most of the preserved renaissance residences
were built by the members of the immigrant families Abafi,
Bajci,
Cuzič
and
Zmeškal.
