Occupation of Northern
Kysuce
by Poland in
1938-1939
Until World War I Polish side did not have any claims on the Slovak
territory and generally historical borders between Poland and Hungary had
been recognized. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries some part of
Polish society, mostly in Cracow, showed their interest in territory of
Spiš,
Orava
and
Kysuce,
but their interest was mostly in ethnografic and lin¬
guistic area. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Poland
started requisitioning of some Slovak northern regions, including
Kysuce,
to their area. Both countries asked for help Supreme Council which decid¬
ed about plebiscite on
28
September
1919.
It was to take part in the regions
of
Těšín,
Orava
and
Spiš,
not in
Kysuce.
At last no plebiscite decided about
the controversial territory but international arbitration. The Conference of
Ambassadors decided about dividing of
Spiš
and
Orava
between Poland
and Czechoslovakia on
28
July
1920.
Year
1938,
so fatal for the Czecho¬
slovak Republic, befell most heavily on the borderline regions such as up¬
per
Kysuce.
Poland was claiming this area without success since
1918.
On
1
November
1938,
Poland sent a diplomatic note to the Czechoslovak
government, in which they demanded territorial withdrawal of the north¬
ern Slovakia, including the part of
Kysuce.
Polish claims were based on
the theories that local inhabitants are ethnical Poles despite the fact that
people from these regions considered themselves to be Slovaks. Evidence
of different understanding of national feeling importance of inhabitants of
Kysuce
from this particular
región
is a diary and memoirs of F.
Hrušovský
and M. Gotkiewicz
-
two members of delimitation commission. The in¬
habitants of the withdrawn area opposed their joining to Poland. On
25
November
1938,
the Polish army started the occupation of the withdrawn
area prematurely without declaring it to the Czechoslovak government,
so the Czechoslovak army started the resistance. After the acceptance of
the Polish government s demands for the withdrawal of the agreed area,
the fights were ended and the withdrawn area seized by the Polish army.
They also lost a local railway

Zwardoń.
The
Kysuce
region was
91
in a specific situation. Not entire villages but only their parts were taken.
This affected the villages of
Svrčinovec,
Cierne
and
Skalité.
This fact de¬
termined the problematic issues that the Polish state and eyen more the
Church administration had to face. Actually, there were no churches on the
Polish side and the only school was in
Svrčinovec.
Katowice episcopate
with
Stanislaw Adamski
as the head tried to finish the building of a church
in
Svrčinovec,
and they also planned to build a new church in
Skalité.
Even Silesian Duke M.
Grażyński
was engaged in the matter. Katowice
episcopate at the same time strived to form an independent parish in this
area with a new Polish priest. One of the main motifs was to prevent un¬
wanted influences on believers from the other side of the border. This was
not accomplished before the summer months in
1939.
However, the Polish
side did not manage to complete the church in
Svrčinovec nor
build a new
one in
Skalité
because the Second World War broke out on
1
September
1939.
Polish authorities tried to win favours of inhabitants from the occu¬
pied region by fair means or foul but without success. Repressive measures
against inhabitants escalated on the eve of World War Two. Divided vil¬
lages
Svrčinovec,
Cierne
and
Skalité
were to the great joy of local inhabit¬
ants united again after the German armies invaded Poland on
1
September
1939.
Inhabitants of
Skalité
decided to build calvary to commemorate this
occasion. After the end of war in
1945
Kysuce
remained permanent part
of Slovakia.
