New York) is considered to be one of
the most influential composers of the second half of the twentieth century. His
multifaceted body of work has decisively shaped our notion of the artistic avant-
garde
—
not only in music, but also in literature, visual art, and performance.
In
1930
Cage traveled to Europe where he remained for eighteen months,
studying architectural history and the piano in Paris, where he became ac¬
quainted with the latest developments in the European avant-garde. Return¬
ing to the US, he was privately taught by, among others, Arnold
Schönberg,
and established a percussion ensemble whose members included
Mercé
Cunningham and
László Moholy-Nagy.
Cage's close links to the emigrant
Bauhaus
artists, his friendship with Max Ernst and Peggy Guggenheim, and
his activities as a teacher at the legendary Black Mountain College broadened
both the contacts Cage maintained for his entire life and his encounters with
the visual arts.
Dadaism,
Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, and
Fluxus
were key
reference points for his experimental compositions, as was his intensive
involvement with Zen Buddhism.
The Ryoanji drawings represent the opus magnum of Cage's visual work,
in which the goals for his entire output are rendered visible. Between
1983
and
1992,
around
170
drawings were created within an atmosphere of private
meditation. During a concert tour in
1962,
a visit to the rock garden or the
Ryoanji Zen monastery in Kyoto, dating from around
1500,
provided a de¬
cisive initial inspiration. After this visit, the artist invested himself in the garden's
aesthetic, which is revered in Japan as a consummate rendering
ornature,
a place where nature and culture are one.

of John Cage's visual artworks will be published
in three volumes; the complete series of Ryoanji drawings are presented here
for the first time. |
