THE ECONOMIC ACTIVTY OF THE CZARTORYSKI
PRINCES IN THE DUCHY OF
KLEWAŃ
DURING
THE YEARS
1701-1741
After turbulent and difficult times in the years
1701-1715,
the stabilisa¬
tion and restoration of the duchy began. First, they started to renovate inven¬
tory and farm buildings. Unfortunately, at the end of
18^
century financial
difficulties made it steadily lost much of the works impetus. The spur for
economic revival of the duchy took place at the beginning of the 1730s and
was brought about due to the owner s personal commitment to managing the
economy of the duchy through administrative framework of the land.
The economic changes in the duchy had manifested the owner s progres¬
sive strivings continued in the following years. A lot of enterprising novel¬
ties evolving into capitalism were gradually added to the working feudal
system of landowners. They have been mainly seen when concerned with
the answer to the problem of deficient serfdom, especially
sprzężajna
(a Pol¬
ish word for walking serfdom) serfdom, the insufficiency of which was an¬
nually balanced with growing numbers of mercenaries, own equipment and
pulling force. Although such a resolution resulted in increasing outlay, they
found it necessary for proper economic activity of the duchy
folwark
es¬
tates (a Polish word for a primarily serfdom-based farm and agricultural en¬
terprise). It also made for the contemporary economic and spatial develop¬
ment.
The process of transformation in manual labour on farms was accompa¬
nied by changes leading to the increase in grain production by means of
more careful cultivation, selection of wider variety of seeds as well as
proper act and upkeep of sowing. The changes were also present in cattle
farming contributing to rising breeding level and commodity animal produc¬
tion that could react to market conditions in the mid

720s, when the escala¬
tion of prices affected larger number of breeding oxen and karmny hogs.
Furthermore, elements of capitalist economy arose and became visible in
outlay, wage workforce and division of labour. They have been reflected

in the modernization

brewery and distillery works, employment of spe¬
cialists and consequently setting up areas

responsibilities.

as costs
of manufacture in the works are concerned, in addition to expenses on natu¬
ral resources and workforce, they started providing for transport, fuel, de¬
vices and facilities expenditures. The owner of the duchy noticed the impor¬
tance of the development of the branches that needed importing products.
Such an import substitution policy was launched by Prince
Kazimierz
(a Polish
name for
Casimir)
in
1727
in order to produce marine ropes (formerly
brought from Gdansk) in
Klewań
it self.
The moment August Prince Casimir s son had assumed a position of
control over the duchy, the decline in the previous enterprise epoch super¬
vened and the new one was marked by scrupulously planned expenditures
and factual analysis of the causes and needs. The words:
[...]
let all cities
treat themselves in the most disciplinary way to trades to provide them with
wealth and income
[...]
best define its most characteristic idea. Prince Au¬
gust decided to implement the plan starting with reactivation of derelict
markets and fairs of
Klewań.
This led to worsen the relationship with
neighbouring Olyka (belonging to the influential
Radziwiłł
family) that was
not interested in the flourishing of
Klewań
as a dynamic trade centre.
A new owner of the duchy tried to keep regular business contacts with
Gdańsk.
However, it was not easy. He convinced himself of it when plan¬
ning to launch three ships carrying grain to
Gdańsk
in
1739.
The biggest
problem was to gather enough exportation entry mass as a result of decrease
m
cereal production, reduction in sowing area as well as outflow of cereal

Ołyka.
August did not limit
the duchy to maintain business contacts with the market of
Gdańsk
only, but
also commenced dynamic trade relations with eastern areas of
Siedlce, Łuck
and
Lwów
(Polish proper names for
Siedlce,
Lutsk and Lvov) where the
goods of duchy origin were by far traded.
When compared with the state of the manorial-serf economy of magnate
goods located in other parts of Poland then, the economic level of
folwark
estates in the Duchy of
Klewań
was kept at the same high level which made
them the leading estates in Volhynia and the Ukraine at that time.
