Father Henry Szuman and the Pedagogy
of Social Solidarity
The book presents the life and work of the outstanding
but not commonly known social activist, Father Henry
Szuman
(1882-1939).
In today s terms, his overall re¬
sults attained in the field of socio-educational work
would be called a Pedagogy of Social Solidarity.
The study consists of three parts. The first part,
Homeland: the ideals and the reality, presents the his¬
torical and cultural basis for the attitude of resistance
displayed by patriotic Pomeranian society towards the
Prussian invaders in the 19th and 20th centuries (in
1772
Poland lost its independence to Prussia, Russia
and Austria and regained sovereignty in
1918).
In this
particular cultural and moral space, the social opus of
Fr.
Schuman
was formed and developed. The second
part of the study Social Work, discusses the existence in
Pomeranian Society of Child Care Services in Torun
(1918-1932)
and illustrates the development of the
Catholic model of social work and social pedagogy. In
this work the service of love and a pragmatic ap¬
proach to solving social welfare issues are joined. The
last part of the book Semper Fidelis, presents two types
of fidelity: loyalty to social service and loyalty to the
service of God. The first of these, Szuman demon¬
strated in Starogard
Gdanski
with his charity work (in
the modern sense) and the mobilisation of Catholic

organisations. The second fidelity, loyalty to the service
of God, was proven by his death at the beginning of the
World War II. Those who continued his work after
1945,
although with difficulty and for a short period,
remained faithful to his ideals and the tasks assigned
by Fr. H. Szuman.
1.
Father Henry Szuman was born in Torun, to the family
of the well-known physician and social activist
Dr
Leo
Szuman. During his high school education he was a
member of the Philomath s Circle, a secret patriotic
organisation. In
1901
the Prussian government charged
him and convicted him in the Philomath s Process . In
1908
he was ordained at the
Pelplin
Priest Seminary.
During this time, he began his social and educational
activity. He was involved with a group of Pomeranian
clergy, who from the late 19th century to
1939
actively
participated in local and national societal life. During
the annexation of Poland, the group bravely and self-
lessly fought against the Prussian oppressor and after
World War I, were engaged in the reconstruction and
development of the independent state.
In
1918,
Fr. Szuman created the Pomeranian Soci¬
ety of Child Care in Torun, which he led until
1932.
It
was his greatest social cause. The Society, based on
evangelic rule of
Caritas,
supported the most vulnera¬
ble: war orphans, single mothers, unemployed and the
poor. He managed to engage clergy circles, the general
public, the business world, local government and state
institutions in his work. In
1926,
the President of the
Republic of Poland awarded him with the Officer s
Cross of
Polonia
Restituía
and in
1930
pope Pius XI,

appointed him as prelate. In the period of
1932-1939,
Fr. Szuman lived in Starogard
Gdanski,
where apart
from ecclesiastical obligations, he took an active part
in local
socio-cultural
life, initiating the creation of
many youth associations, labourers and women s soci¬
eties and charitable institutions.
In October
1939,
Fr. Szuman was arrested and along
with several others, executed by the Nazis. He was shot
dead on the market square of
Fordon
town, near Byd¬
goszcz. Since
2003,
he has belonged to so called sec¬
ond group of Polish martyrs from World War II, eligible
for beatification process.

Father Szuman s efforts can be classed as the main¬
stream of national-Christian social work. It was one of
the main
-
next to socio-patriotic (socialist-patriotic)
directions of patriotic activity in Polish territory in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The first educational establishment, organised and
run by Fr. Szuman as part of the Pomeranian Society
of Child Care in Torun, was a summer camp in Gdynia
(1920).
In the summer months

Polish children
from all over Poland and from Westphalia in Germany
benefited from seaside holidays. The exiled children in
particular, profited from the opportunity of contact
with their homeland. Additionally, responsibility came
for the care of children evacuated from Eastern Poland
and Russia during
1920-1922.
Children were allocated
Places in the
Gen. Józef
Haller
Shelter
(1920)
and the
Interim Station Hostel
(1921),
both owned by Torun s
Association. It was a difficult organisational challenge.
Altogether, approximately
800
children were given

help. This complicated task could not have been pos¬
sible without the patriotic and generous attitude of the
Pomeranian public. Other institutions organised by Fr.
Szuman for less wealthy youths studying in Torun,
fulfilled equally important tasks. These were known as
boarding craft schools
(bursy rzemieślnicze)
for boys
(1925)
and for girls
(1928)
giving them a profession
and helping to find employment.
The care and help for the poorest mothers with
children was yet another fundamental area of Fr. Szu-
man s activity. The Association established and ran in
Torun their own multiple social institutions, such as
milk kitchens, converting them to a professional care
centres for mother and child
(1920).
The centres pro¬
vided free medical and hygiene care for children up to
3
years of age and also offered general parental educa¬
tional advice. This support service was in high demand
and was very successful. Equally essential, although
innovative for its time, was a shelter for infants
(1921),
organised by Fr. Szuman with the support of the
American Red Cross. This facility was dedicated to
children born to single mothers, foundlings, orphans
and half orphans. Aid beneficiaries received free medi¬
cal and nursing care and when necessary, free lodging.
The third main direction of Fr. Szuman s activity
included social and educational work in the poorest
district of Torun
-
Mokre .
It was a slum area, an
enclave of extreme poverty and misery, inhabited by
some

unemployed persons with their families. In
this area of high social risk and moral decline, a com¬
munity centre was organised
(1931-1932).
This institu¬
tion provided day care to
130
children of age
3-7,
with
fun, relaxation, lessons of religion and food.
Yet another fundamental field of socio-educational
activity took the form of charity work and social and

cultural activity which was conducted in the years
1932-1939
in Starogard
Gdanski.
The city was a large
economic centre where social tensions and antagonisms
arose from increasing poverty and unemployment
caused by economic downfall. Communist agitation
also contributed to the tense situation. In
1932,
in an
atmosphere of great crisis and difficulty, Fr. Szuman
founded a parish branch of
Caritas
-
the centre of a
broad charity movement, aimed at bringing short and
long term relief, assistance and support to the unem¬
ployed, the poor and the ailing. This
Caritas
institution
found support in a thriving Catholic Action organisa¬
tion formed and led by Fr. Szuman. It consisted of a
variety of church groups and religious fellowships. The
everyday lives of local residents were focussed around
the building of a new church in the town also organised
by Fr. Szuman. In addition, he assisted in the develop¬
ment of many clubs for children and youths, supported
libraries and reading rooms, popularised educational
and moral issues as part of his widespread educational
campaign, focussing on the ideals of education and life
in sobriety. It was an important school of social solidar¬
ity- It gave help and support, taught empathy for the
needs of others and shaped social dialog, cooperation
and collaboration. Having a positive impact on people,
their values and motivations, it enriched the culture of
everyday life.

Father Szuman was most of all a social and educa¬
tional practitioner rather than a scientist or a theorist.
He managed to create, consistently and effectively,
many types of educational, welfare, social and cultural

institutions, particularly where there was a deficiency
of such. He was not a lonely benefactor, or handed out
alms; he distanced himself from the image of a kind-
hearted benefactor. Reaching out to his fellow man, he
motivated others, inspired and developed social action
and engaged a wide range of the general public.
Through his activity he created a modern network of
associations: care, educational, social and cultural so¬
cieties, which included both church institutions (such
as
Caritas)
and secular organisations. His proposals and
solutions were relevant, ambitious and innovative.
Through his institutions, he saved and raised hundreds
of war orphans and gave shelter to homeless mothers.
He assisted marginalised and stigmatised people to rise
from poverty and unemployment and formed patriotic
and religious attitudes, encouraged empathy and social
commitment. He taught important community skills
such as solidarity, cooperation and social dialog.
The socio-educational activities of Fr. Szuman re¬
sulted in the birth of the Pedagogy of Social Solidarity.
This term refers to intentional activity undertaken to
develop other human beings. This action is uncondi¬
tional, altruistic and is conducted with full dedication
and responsibility. The Pedagogy of Social Solidarity is
the opposite of the Pedagogy of Enslavement, which re¬
fers to hostile forces and measures used against human
beings, which are already established either by the
unjust allocation of resources or as a result of social
and political totalitarian regimes.
The concept of the Pedagogy of Social Solidarity,
constructed and used in this book, is based on the
principle of solidarity, understood as one of the most
important foundations of the Christian order in social
organisation. In papal teachings such a rule was de¬
scribed as friendship (Leo
XIII),
social love (Pius

XI) and civilisation of love (Pope Paul VI, John Paul
II). This principle is fundamentally related to the com¬
mandment of love towards God and towards neigh¬
bours (theological argument), individuals in society
overcoming social, economic, cultural and historical
conditioning (anthropological argument), the human
right to access tangible and intangible means to an
adequate standard of living (legal argument), the ne¬
cessity and possibility of forming attitudes of social
love and compassion (educative and formative argu¬
ment), as well as the special option of the widely
interpreted custom of Christian love (charitable and
social argument).
Nowadays, the Pedagogy of Social Solidarity extends
and enriches axiology, theory and the practice of social
pedagogy and social work. It reminds us that socio-
educational work is the promotion of the integral de¬
velopment of human beings and not just service to
clients. It is an involved, complex and creative effort,
which takes into account multiple dimensions of social
apprehension and hope.
