An Image of Bratislava in the

Centuries
The publication deals with an analysis of contemporary ideas and mental images
of Bratislava, while trying to determine how the mental images, especially the positive
self-image, were shaped and reproduced in diverse political regimes during different
historical periods, since the early modern era till the second half of the 20th century. It
describes how and for what purpose the city was symbolically appropriated by political
leaders and other diverse population groups, and how they deliberately constructed
national symbolism in the city. Our research shows that mental images of the city,
particularly those presented by political elite officials, were designed and used for a
carefully chosen purpose. The image of the city was selectively modelled, and a com¬
monly used argument for doing so was to shape and secure a certain image of the city,
and thus the associated loyalty to the (current) state and its regime.
In addition to creating the official images, there was also another important form
of symbolic appropriation of the city
-
the name of the city itself and the names of its
districts, the names of public spaces, and the residents. The name of the city, as well as
the names of its streets and squares, parks and waterfronts was, since the 19th century,
a feature of the symbolic capital of the entire nation. In particular, since the second
half of the 19th century, in the context of nationalism, the image of the city became an
expression of national prestige and loyalty required by the state. This purpose was later
intensified in connection to

realized aspirations of the city to gain the
status of capital of Slovakia.
Historical Bratislava (named until March
1919 Pressburg /
Pozsony
/
Prešporok)
had many times in the past held the position of capital city. In some cases this status
and title was not legally established, but the city effectively performed the functions of
the seat of central public authorities (whether political, economic or cultural). The sta¬
tus of Pressburg/Bratislava as the capital city had, for various reasons, been disputed,
since the first official city in the state was Vienna, Budapest and after
1918,
Prague.
The mental images were often created by the political elite, for whom the position of
Bratislava as the capital was crucial. When analysing the survey of mental images of
the city
-
the projections, or rather the fictions
-
it is clear that these do not correspond
with the reality. They reflect the perceptions of its contemporaries, projecting rather
their wishes and ideas than the reality. Creating such significance for the city subse¬
quently strengthened the symbolic value of Pressburg/Bratislava.
The name of our book, Between the Province and the Capital City, refers to several
aspects of the position of Bratislava in the past. It refers to the possibility of a discon¬
tinuity of progressive development from the provincial centre to the capital
-
as seen
in the decline in importance of
Pressburg
from the turn of the 18th and 19th century,
when it was no longer a central seat of the Hungarian authorities.
It also suggests that the labelling of Bratislava as a metropolis is relative when com¬
pared to other cities in Europe. In assessing the status of the city it is essential to
consider as decisive the features of the political, economic and cultural centre that
Bratislava fulfilled since
1919.
Since the research of mental ideas about the city, as we

have already said, is a relatively new area of interest for social scientists, we focused
on several aspects of this problem. The historical transformations of mental images
of Pressburg/Bratislava as presented by its contemporaries act as the binding agent.
They were based on the changing status and the importance of the city in different
historical periods and political regimes.
The book is therefore arranged chronologically and thematically. The first chap¬
ter, Image and Representations of the City, explains the approaches and concepts of a
semantic analysis of mental representations of the city

subchapter, published for the first time in the
Slovak original, synthetically outlines the main issues connected to the status of the
city and its presentations within different political regimes during the 19th and 20th
century.
The second chapter focuses on the transformations of the city and its representa¬
tions resulting from political developments. It captures the transition from the city ful¬
filling the role of the central city (capital city) of Hungarian part of
Habsburg
monar¬
chy in the 17th and 18th century, when the most important identity of its inhabitants
was the religious identity, not the national one

to the official
(self-) image of
Pressburg
generated by the elites. This emphasized its importance in
the process of nationalization of the society after the Austro-Hungarian compromise
( Ausgleich )
in
1867

The transition to a new political regime after the
end of World War I, also expressed within the new official name of the city, resulted in
significant changes in the mental ideas of Bratislava, which appeared in metaphorical
form in the contemporary press
(Blanka Mongu).
The following chapter, Status and Importance: the Province or Metropolis?, attempts
to clarify to what extent the city fulfilled the function of a central city or a capital city.

The last chapter, Bratislava

ideology and the method of building an official image of Bratislava as the capital of
Slovakia during the wartime Slovak State and the post-war Communist regime

Using specific examples this book shows that the image of
the city

which is fiction

reflected different concepts of a city, and in the hands of
representatives of political power such fiction greatly influences real life.
