Muslim migrants
and Czech secular state
This book covers several aspects connected with the lives of
Muslim migrants in the Czech Republic. Its findings are based
mainly on interviews with Muslims from different countries of
origin living in the Czech Republic.
In the chapter regarding the social conditions of migrants
we talk about two groups of Muslims: refugees who applied for
asylum and whose memories of their first years here are usually
related to satisfying their basic needs. And those who came to the
Czech Republic to find a job, study or to follow their life partners;
their experience is more variable and their social conditions are
usually satisfactory.
In the topic concerning relations of Muslims toward the host
liberal and secular state we present that Muslims have no trouble
to accept a liberal state, its norms and rules. They appreciate the
freedom given by the state and the fact that it is entirely up to them
what they wish to observe from their traditions and from their
faith. Czech society surprises them by its liberal attitudes regarding
religion, sexual morals and education of children both at home
and at school. They also perceive a barrier when meeting new
people caused by reserved, restrained and cold behaviour of many
Czechs. However, they consider Czech society in general as friendly
and open to foreigners and their influence. Islamophobia is more
imputed by the media as well as xenophobia and racism which is
also perceived but very often excused and assigned to ignorance.

Résumé
We also discuss what was made stronger in the identity of the
migrants and, to the contrary, what emerged to be in their view
of little use. Many of them think that they could offer Czech
society a more spiritual environment from their own cultures.
Regarding faith and religion many Muslim migrants are shocked
by the fact that many Czechs declare themselves to be atheists.
Atheism is an incomprehensible concept for them; Muslims
expected Christians here to be closer to them since both Islam
and Christianity are
Abrahamie
religions.
At the very end three Muslims reflect on the future of Islam
in the today s world, the situation of the Muslim community in
the Czech Republic and the ability to live in a multi-religious and
multicultural society. The book also contains a glossary of the
terms used and an index.
