Summary
The culmination of protest actions against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by
Warsaw Pact troops in
1968
and against the new political direction being taken by the
Communist Party occurred on the first anniversary of the August invasion. Nevertheless,
the extent and intensity of the protests came as a surprise to the leaders of the party
and the state. Though they were spontaneous and uncoordinated, the Communist
regime attempted to prove that they comprised an extensive, centrally organised
operation, and reacted with previously unseen brutality. In several places
-
mainly in
Prague, Brno and
Liberec,
but also in Ostrava and
Ústí nad Labem
-
barricades were
erected and there were pitched street battles. This book, which is based on archive
documents, presents numerous period statistics, quotations from police reports, and
witness testimonies, along with excerpts from regime propaganda targeted against
the demonstrators. It also features valuable testimonies about the actions of those
the protesting citizens were hailing in August
1969 -
Alexandr
Dubček,
Oldřich
Černík, Ludvík Svoboda
and other icons of the reform process
-
recorded both on
the eve of the demonstrations (on the occasion of Jan Palach s action, during what
were referred to as the hockey events of March
1969)
and shortly after they were
quashed. In addition, the book contains detailed information on the deaths of citizens
resulting from the intervention of the security forces. Unlike in August
1968,
their
exact number is known. Alongside five young people shot dead in Prague and Brno,
one
-
to this day unknown
-
soldier from the enrolment service was killed during
the movement of military equipment. As the authors say, it is on the other hand
difficult to count the injured; however, they estimate the number at several hundred.
The harsh clampdown on the demonstrations, and the subsequent announcement
of repressive legal measures, came as a shock to the majority of citizens and became
a milestone on the path to normalisation. This study therefore also serves as a kind of
chronicle of the Czechoslovak tragedy of the post-
1968
era.
