interdisciplinary perspective. The central thesis is that the

is faced with a direct democratic dilemma , which is
compounded by the EU s rigid constitutional structure and a
growing politicisation of the referendum device on matters
related to European integration.

Fernando
Méndez
is a senior researcher and lecturer at the
Centre for Research on Direct Democracy, University of Zurich.

is a senior lecturer in the Department of Law at
Queen Mary University of London.

is a lecturer in the Department of
Communication and Internet Studies at the Cyprus University
