Musical

Summary
The book is the first monograph devoted to musical life at the University of Wroclaw in the 19th
century and first half of the 20th century. It explores the beginnings of formalised academic music edu¬
cation, the birth and growth of musicology at the University as well as the origins and transformations
of student musical ensembles. The monograph is complemented by annexes with a list of successive
directors of the Royal Academic Institute of Church Music, list of musicians and musicologists associ¬
ated with the University of Wroclaw and their achievements, list of conductors of the Academic Music
Society and ensembles that emerged from it, as well as dates of concerts of university ensembles.
Part one of the book provides an outline of the history of the University of Wroclaw and presents
the University s oldest musical tradition going back to the times of the
Leopoldina
Academy estab¬
lished in
1702.
At that time, as in other similar institutions in German-speaking countries, music was
present during classes and religious services, drama performances and the most important university
celebrations. In the late 18th century, students from the local monastery school organised their own
concerts as well. On the other hand, the Academy did not play any significant role in the city s music
education and artistic life. The situation changed when the Academy was merged with the Frankfurt
Viadrina and a state university was established in Wroclaw in
1811.
Part two of the book is a detailed analysis of music-related education and research activities at the
University of Wroclaw, from its foundation to the closure of the German university in
1944.
The cen¬
tral music unit at the University was the Royal Academic Institute of Church Music
(Das Königliche
Akademische Institut für Kirchenmusik),
functioning as an affiliated institution with finances from a
separate ministerial budget. The Institute drew on the idea of the pioneer of German musical educa¬
tion,
Carl Friedrich Zelter,
who believed that universities should initiate the promotion of musical
culture. Given the two-denominational profile of the University, its authorities decided to engage, as
professors of music,
Friedrich Wilhelm Berner,
organist at the Lutheran Church of St. Elisabeth, and
580
SUMMARY
Joseph Ignaz
Schnabel,
cathedral music master. Together they developed a concept of the Institute
curriculum. Teaching began officially on
19
June
1815.
The Institute s curriculum featured choral
classes, organ playing, individual singing and voice lessons, as well as theory and lectures on church
music.
The 1830s and 1840s were marked by transformations of the Institute s curriculum. A new elem¬
ent in the Institute s curriculum came in the form of lectures on the history of music initiated in
the mid-1840s by
Theodor
Mosewius, a distinguished teacher and conductor, founder of the local
Singakademie.
Mosewius was the first teacher in Germany who gave university lectures on the works
of
Johann
Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang
Amadeus
Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. After Mo-
sewius s death in
1858,
his teaching position was briefly held by
Carl Reinecke,
who after two years
was appointed conductor of the famous Leipzig
Gewandhaus
orchestra. The line of development set
by Mosewius was continued by another teacher, conductor and composer, Julius
Schärfer,
who was
the first university lecturer in Germany to have devoted particular attention to medieval music as well
as the history or art song.
In addition to choral singing and historical lectures, an important place in the curriculum was
occupied by organ classes, which complemented church music programme. From
1833
organ classes
were held in the Music Room with
Moritz
Robert
Müller s
newly built thirteen-stop instrument. In
the 19th century musical education was continued by Joseph Franz Wolf, Felix
Expedit Baumgart
and
Moritz Ludwig
Leopold Brosig. Academic activity combined with performing practice began to
develop further when in
1887
the Institute engaged
Emil Bohn,
who taught organ playing and music
theory. During these classes he particularly stressed the teaching of harmony and counterpoint. His
historical lectures focused on the works of J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, F. Schubert,
F. Chopin and R. Wagner. The specific balance he achieved between theory and practice at the time
laid the foundations for a new academic discipline
—
musicology.
Many of those attending classes and lectures at the Institute were students of both theological
departments, but as time went by music teaching became increasingly popular also among students of
humanities as well as medicine and law. Worthy of note among them were composers and conductors:
Eugen
Raphael
Seidelmann, Eduard Tauwitz
and Rudolf
Büke;
organists: Carl Gottlieb
Freudenberg,
Franz Dirschke and
Emanuel
Adler;
as well as musicographers: Carl Julius
Adolph
Hugo Hoffmann,
Robert Eitner, Hugo
Goldschmidt
and
Heinrich Reimann.
A new era in the work of the Wroclaw Institute began in
1909
with the appointment of a music¬
ologist, Doctor Otto Kinkeldey, a Berlin-educated American of German origin. Thanks to his post¬
doctoral degree
(habilitation)
in musicology
—
the first ever in Wroclaw
—
which he obtained in May
1910,
Kinkeldey was granted the veniam
legendi
to give lectures and was appointed assistant professor.
This moment marks the beginning of a musicological centre in Wroclaw, though it was not officially
established until
1914,
when the new unit was granted a full professorship. An extension of the lec¬
tures came in the form of musicology exercises
(Musikwissenschaftliche Übungen),
launched for
the first time in the
1910/1911
winter semester for students of the Faculty of Philosophy. In his own
research Kinkeldey tackled first of all issues related to music in Silesia, which was the focus of the
department s research interests. A difficult financial situation and the exclusion of foreigners from
working at German universities connected with the outbreak of the work, made Kinkeldey decide to
leave Wroclaw in
1914
and return to the United States.
Kinkeldey s successor, the Berlin musicologist Max Schneider, working in the Institute from
1915,
in
1920
transformed the existing musical education centre into a new university unit. This was
the Music Institute of the University of Wroclaw
(Musikalisches Institut bei der Universität Breslau),
subordinated to the Faculty of Philosophy and comprising two equal divisions: Musicological Seminar
(Musikwissenschaftliches
Seminar) and Institute of Church Music
(Institut für Kirchenmusik).
At the
same time Schneider was made full professor (ordinarius adpersonam), a nomination that confirmed
the status of musicology as a new university discipline. Just like his predecessor, Schneider conducted
research into various issues related to the musical culture of the region. He started a series of student
SUMMARY

field expeditions across Silesia in order to catalogue musical relics. New topics that appeared among
those tackled during lectures and classes were related to the introduction to historical studies, and to
the history of musical forms and genres. On Schneider s initiative, lectures were complemented not
only by seminars but also by a student Collegium musicum.
The directorship of Wroclaw musicology changed in
1930
with the appointment of Franz Arnold
Schmitz,
a renowned Beethoven specialist and professor at the University of Bonn.
Schmitz
shifted
the centre of gravity even more to Silesia s musical past, making it the focus of the work done within
the musicological seminar, following the authorities recommendations to bring the national style in
music to the fore. Hence the predominance of German music and its cultivation in Silesia among the
topics of lectures.
Schmitz
very skilfully incorporated field studies of the oldest examples of regional
music into the national programme that pursued the objectives of Germany s eastern policy
(Ostpo¬
litik).
Beginning with the
1935/1936
winter semester, the Faculty of Philosophy introduced series of
interdisciplinary lectures encompassing many humanistic disciplines and resulting from an agreement
reached by professors. The fruitful work of the last Wroclaw professor of German musicology was
stopped by the outbreak of WWII and his subsequent conscription.
The expanding musicological offer of the Wroclaw Music Institute led to a gradual growth of its
staff. One assistant post was established within the Institute. A separate group of musicology lectur¬
ers was that of assistant professors, employed from
1927.
It was at that time that the University of
Wrocław
granted the first post-doctoral degree in musicology, to Peter Epstein. The degree was also
conferred in the same year on
Walther Vetter.
Ernst
Kirsch
joined the group of assistant professors in
1929,
followed in
1937
by Fritz
Feldmann,
whose pedagogical and organisational talent enabled the
Institute to survive in the first few years of WWII, when he remained the only active teacher after
Schmitz
and
Kirsch
were called up. In
1941,
the military service duty caught up with
Feldmann
too.
The University authorities made sure the Institute would continue its work by appointing Walther
Hermann
Vetter
its head.
Vetter
held this post until the evacuation of the city in late 1944/early
1945,
an event that closed the German period in the history of the University of Wroclaw.
A measure of the achievements of pre-war musicology at the University of Wroclaw can be found
also in doctoral dissertations written there. Their authors were mainly concerned with the history of
European music, focusing on German-speaking countries. A special place was occupied by works on
the history of Silesia s musical culture, encompassing descriptions of music collections, monographs of
music centres, monographs of selected composers as well as other problem areas. Regional themes were
examined in doctoral dissertations written by, for example, Hans Erdmann Guckel,
Georg
Jensch, Ernst
Kirsch,
Fritz
Müller-Prem, Heribert Ringmann,
Fritz Koschinsky, Fritz
Feldmann,
Waldemar Matysiak,
Wolfram
Eschenbach
and Wolfgang
Scholz.
Issues combining music and other disciplines were studied
by scholars representing other sciences, a process that produced various interdisciplinary works. Owing
to the practical-theoretical profile of the
Wrocław
course, among its graduates there were both eminent
musicologists and music theorists, as well as composers, conductors and instrumentalists, for example,
Günter Bialas,
Andreas Liess, Kurt Prerauer, Cornelia
Schröder-Auerbach, Hans
Joachim Zingel, Ed¬
mund
von
Borek, Kurt Schwaen, Jadwiga
Ostoja-Ostaszewska, Hans Pischner and Rudolf Walter.
Education in musical practice and music teaching was continued at the other department of the
Music Institute
—
the Academic Institute of Church Music chaired by successive musicology heads.
In the first few decades of the 20th century the focus was mainly on the education of church musi¬
cians and conductors, supervised by the music masters of the
Wrocław
cathedral, Siegfried
Cichy
and
Father Paul Blaschke, as well as Professor Johannes Steinbeck, who was responsible for the teaching
of Protestant music. Kestenberg s reform introduced in the
1920s,
the aim of which was to promote
and make uniform the structure and organisation of teacher education centres, played an important
role in the development and
reorientation
of the
Wrocław
Institute.
1932
was marked by the opening
of another unit of equal status to the existing ones
—
the School Music Division
(Abteilung für Schul¬
musik) .
The state did not allow it, however, to run a full study course, which is why
Wrocław
students
were forced to continue their education in Berlin. The prestige of the Music Institute increased when it
582
summary
was granted its own building in University Square and when its status was raised to that of a university
level school.
1937
was marked by the official launch of the Graduate School of Music Education and
Church Music
(Das Hochschulinstitut für Musikerziehung und Kirchenmusik).
The School s offer
with regard to music education and church music covered theoretical and practical courses (instru¬
ment playing, singing and conducting) run in the
1930s
and
1940s
by established
Wrocław
musicians
and teachers: Hermann
Buchal,
Gerhard Werner
Strecke,
Rudolf
Büke, Heribert Ringmann, Günter
Bialas, Otto Burkert,
Bronisław Poźniak,
Franz
Bollón,
Franz Schätzer, Gerhard Zeggert, Gotthold
Richter, Fritz Binnowsky and Bruno
Sanke.
The main teaching facilities of the
Wrocław
Music Institute were located in the historical main
building of the University. The academic and artistic life centred around the Music Room (previously
Oratorium
Mariánům),
which was rebuilt and renovated several times; its organ, too, underwent re¬
placement or repair.
Müller s
instrument, used by students throughout the 19th century, was replaced
in
1901
by a mneteen-stop organ from the Swidnica-based
Schlag und Söhne
company, placed in
a prospect designed by Hans Poelzig. The instrument was replaced again during the
1938
complete
refurbishment, when a thirty-two-stop electro-pneumatic organ, constructed by the
Sauer
company
from Frankfurt (Oder), was placed in the existing prospect. This instrument was destroyed, as was
the entire interior of the Music Room, by a bomb that hit the main University building during the
siege of Wroclaw in
1945.
The old vestry, adjoining the Music Room, housed the Institute library and seminar room. The
beginning of the library collection was associated with the confiscation of the property belonging to
Silesian monasteries and churches, a process that began in
1810.
The post of librarian was held suc¬
cessively by music teachers:
Berner, Mosewius, Baumgart, Schäffer
and Bohn, followed by professors
and assistant professors of musicology: Kinkeldey, Schneider,
Schmitz
and
Feldmann.
Over the years,
the Institute s collection was gradually expanded. In
1910
Kinkeldey initiated a cataloguing campaign
which facilitated access to the collection thanks to a uniform numbering system. In the
1920s
and
1930s
the Institute received new Silesian collections, which were acquired during field studies. The
library holdings fortunately survived the war thanks to the evacuation carried out towards the end of
1944.
The library went on to serve Polish musicology teachers and students until March
1952,
when
the entire inventory was transferred to Warsaw. The pre-war
Wrocław
musicology collection com¬
prised over
15,000
volumes, including over
4,500
music manuscripts, about
1500
old music prints,
about
10,000
music books and prints from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as periodicals and
gramophone records.
The third part of the book is devoted to concert life at the University of
Wrocław,
organised by
university ensembles. The first group comprises student ensembles formed as part of choral classes at
the Royal Academic Institute of Church Music. The organisational support for concerts was provided
by the Church Music Society
(Verein für Kirchenmusik),
established in
1819,
the aim of which was to
perform great vocal-instrumental works, e.g. G.F. Handel s oratorios, performed in
1819-1821.
In the
tollowing decades only occasional vocal-instrumental concerts were organised at the Institute. From
the 1830s onwards, there was an annual evening of choral and organ music, which served at the same
time as an exam Owmg to a gradual disappearance of denominational specialisation, choral classes
were reorganised in the 1890s, when confessional departments were brought back: St. Cecilia Choir
(Cacilienchor) was established for the Catholics, while the Protestants sang in St. John Choir (Johan-

performances had a characteristic repertoire, comprising popular student, patriotic and art songs writ¬
ten with male choirs in mind. What also constituted a valuable artistic experience for the members of
the ensembles was the participation in German national associations, which made it possible for them
to present their skills outside
Wrocław.
The nearly

50-year-long work of the Music Institute at the University of Wroclaw as well as the
broad artistic horizons of the university ensembles had a crucial impact on the city s musical culture.
In addition to pursuing its main objective
—
education of professional musicians, teachers and con¬
ductors
—
the musicology centre at the University of
Wrocław
laid the foundations for research into
the centuries-long, rich musical culture of Silesia.
