SUMMARY Sonata in В Minor by Franz Liszt is a unique phenomenon in the histoiy of piano music. It belongs to the most popular, demanding and difficult masterpieces of all piano literature. Since it was written in 1853, Sonata has been published by various publishing houses, including Breitkopf Härtel and C.F. Peters. The analysis and com parison of those editions has shown that there is no edition that would meet the requirements of contemporary piano performance practices. Therefore, in order to find a perfect solution to the afore mentioned problem, this paper aims to arrange and publish a new edition of Sonata in В Minor, and provide an interpretation made from the perspective of the author’s arrangement of the masterpiece. The dissertation is composed of three chapters. The first chapter is titled SONATA IN В MINOR BY FRANZ LISZT and consists of four sections which discuss the origins and the form of the sonata. The first section, SONATA IN В MINOR IN THE CONTEXT OF PIANO WORKS BY FRANZ LISZT, introduces basic aspects connected with the meaning and role of the sonata in piano literature. The second section, TURBULENT HISTORY OF THE SONATA IN В MINOR, de picts the controversial reception of the sonata in the second half of the nineteenth century, including both positive and negative opin ions of such composers and critics as Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, Clara Schumann and Edward Hanslick. The third section, FORM OF THE PIECE, explores various possibilities of formal con struction of the sonata. Although the work does not consist of sepa rate movements, many
scholars attempt to divide it into inner parts that reflect either sonata form or sonata cycle. The fourth section concentrates on the interpretation of the sonata with special empha sis on the four most popular interpretations: as a musical portrayal of the legend of Dr. Faustus, musical autobiography of Liszt, eternal battle between God and Devil, and an allegory of Eden that refers to Milton’s Paradise Lost. 141
The second chapter under the title of THE AUTHOR’S AR RANGEMENT OF SONATA IN В MINOR BY FRANZ LISZT contains five sections. The first section titled THE MANUSCRIPT describes in detail the manuscript of the sonata, including its appearance and physical properties. Section two, FIRST EDITIONS, discusses first arrangements and editions of the piece, among others by Jose Vianna da Motta, Rafael Joseffy, Emil von Sauer, and Ernst Herttrich, whereas the third section, TEXTUAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MANUSCRIPT AND FIRST EDITIONS, explores textual discrepancies between the manuscript and the aforementioned editions. The fourth section, PEDALIZATION, emphasizes the issues of pedalization and fingering as well as such components of music as melodics, tempo, timbre and harmony. Section five, FRAGMENTS OF THE MANUSCRIPT COVERED BY LISZT, reveals several alternative solu tions that were finally removed by Liszt and replaced with fragments that appeared later in the urtext and other editions. Depiction of the unknown bars that were taken directly from the manuscript may help pianists understand the intention of the composer. The third chapter fitted INTERPRETATION OF THE SONATA IN В MI NOR BY FRANZ LISZT constitutes the main core of this paper. Sec tion one, METHODS OF SOLVING TECHNICAL AND MUSICAL PROBLEMS AS A BASIC STAGE OF WORK ON THE MUSICAL PIECE deals with the main aspects of Liszt’s methodology and bas ing on the example of Liszt’s Technische Studien introduces basic notions of working on the technique that helps to attain pianistic virtuosity. The second section,
PERFORMANCE COMMENTARY, includes detailed guidelines connected with practicing and playing Liszt’s Sonata in В Minor. Section three is the author’s own arrange ment of the sonata which not only provides detailed pedalization and fingering but also gives technical and musical commentaries and suggests alternative solutions often rooted in Liszt’s methodology. Both the theoretical part of the paper and the author’s own ar rangement and edition of the Sonata in В Minor by Franz Liszt aim to bring forward many aspects of piano playing in the context of Liszt’s methodology. Hopefully, it will prove to be of help to every pianist who understands and plays on the highest level of the greatest mas terpieces in piano literature? - Sonata in В Minor by Franz Liszt.

Both the theoretical part of the paper and the author’s own ar rangement and edition of the Sonata in В Minor by Franz Liszt aim to bring forward many aspects of piano playing in the context of Liszt’s methodology. Hopefully, it will prove to be of help to every pianist who understands and plays on the highest level of the greatest mas terpieces in piano literature? - Sonata in В Minor by Franz Liszt.
