The film industry and mainstream popular culture
are notorious for promoting stereotypical images
of Native Americans: the noble and ignoble savage,
the ruthless warrior, the pronoun-challenged
sidekick, the princess, the sexualized maiden,
the drunk, and others. While some advocates
have spoken out against these inappropriate and
damaging representations, Hollywood continues
to produce exploitative images of Native people,
which are often found in blockbuster colonial
or mid- to late-nineteenth-century films such as
The Last of the Mohicans
(1992)
or Dances with
Wolves
(1990).
Over the years, however, Indig¬
enous filmmakers have both challenged these
representations and moved past them, offering
their own distinct forms of cinematic expression.
Native Americans on Film: Conversations, Teaching,
and Theory examines the numerous ways in which
Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous
filmmakers weave together their cultural storytelling
structures with Hollywood s narrative traditions to
create particularly Indigenous practices in film.
Emphasizing the implications of long-standing
stereotypes and exploring the development of
Fourth Cinema
—
the growing corpus of Native
and Indigenous motion pictures
—
Native Americans
on Film provides new insights into an expanding
area of study.
Drawing inspiration from the Indigenous film
movement, M.
Elise
Marubbio and Eric
L
Buffalohead, along with an interdisciplinary team
of scholars, bring filmmakers into an intertextuai
conversation with academics to analyze represen¬
tational styles and concepts of media sovereignty
in Indigenous film. Considering key narrative and
documentary films across disciplines such as
ethnic studies, visual anthropology, American
Indian studies, and film studies, these writings
engage ongoing debates about the definition
of Native film and the Native filmmaker identity.
Interviews with seminal figures in Native film,
including Beverly Singer,
Mona
Smith, Shelley
Niro, Sandy Osawa, Randy Redroad,
Sterlin
Harjo, and Btackhorse Lowe, spark a complex
dialogue that opens the doors for vigorous and
dynamic debate.
Offering theoretical paths to understanding
Indigenous cinema, along with strategies for
teaching particular films, Native Americans
on Film highlights different voices and worldviews
that emerge across the movement. Marubbio
and Buffalohead bring together theoretical
perspectives, pedagogical approaches,
and interviews with Native filmmakers in a
rnultifaceted and unique combination of voices.
