Summary
This volume presents, in synthesis, the evolution of the Jews of the
historic
Bukovina
in the period between
1918-1939,
after consulting the primary
archival sources, the studies, the articles and the monographs published until the
present days. The historic evolution of the Jews in the
Bukovina
territory
recorded extremely complex and controversial moments: from their settlement in
different locations of the historic
Bukovina
(urban or rural) and their assertion as
a powerful and influential community, until the delicate moments following the
union of the
Bukovina
Duchy with the Romanian Kingdom and, implicitly, in a
direct relationship with the evolutions recorded, at the European level, with
regards at the phenomena of great singleness and tragedy, specific to the
Holocaust. In
1908,
at Cernautz/Czernowitz, took place the first International
Congress (known as the Tchernovitzer Conference or Die Czernowitzer
Sprachkonferenz )
dedicated to the Yiddish. The idea of this important
manifestation belonged to Natham
Birnbaum.
Among the participants in the
Conference there were numerous personalities of the Jewish world, such as I. L.
Peretz, A.
Reisen,
Sh. Ash, H. D.
Homberg,
so on. The choice of the capital of
Bukovina
for the development of this important Conference
-
even though at
that moment Cemautz was just a large urbane Jewish center in the world
-
was
not made at random at all. Here lived an important, powerful, homogenous
community, very famous in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and beyond its
frontiers. Cernautz was known as Czernowitz in Yiddish, gathering together, on

this occasion,
important
personalities in order to debate on the issue of the state
of Yiddish. The power and the contribution of the Jews of
Bukovina
to the
culture and Spirituality of
Bukovina

beyond the economic references, such as
commerce, finances and banks
-
were really impressive, as a proof being the
personalities asserted within the
Bukovina
area, with Paul
Celan
(Paul Antschel)

The Western historiography
was mainly preoccupied to underline
-
in a natural manner
-
the marginal
condition of the Jews in the Great Romania
(Bukovina
in the issue under
discussion), implicitly the facets of
antisemitism
which culminated, after
1933,
with the accentuated deterioration of the relationships with the Germans living in
the province, without excluding the representatives of other ethnic communities,
with the Romanians living in
Bukovina
at the top. It couldn t have been
otherwise, since, during the the baccalaureate exam in
1926,
at Cernautz, a
Jewish student called David Fallik was killed by Nicolae Totu, a Romanian
citizen, in the context of extreme violence in the area of the historic
Bukovina.
Nicolae Totu was acquitted in
1927
after a regrettable trial organized at
Câmpulung Moldovenesc.
A number of

lawyers volunteered to defend
Nicolae Totu, who was finally represented by Mr. Paul
Iliescu,
a lawyer in
Câmpulung Moldovenesc.
Nicolae
Totu s
trial became the starting point of some
krge anti-Semitic manifestations, which influenced the judge s verdict.
Following the public nationalistic mind of that period, Totu was declared a
martyr of the Romanian cause, his glorious deed being represented by the
filing of a young Jew. These aspects, together with similar others, by the
violence of the reasons that were used, happened in a region which was famous
specifically for the understanding between the living ethnic communities, show
the degradation of the atmosphere of tolerance in
Bukovina,
on account of the
strong development of nationalism and anti-Semitism. In the period in the two
World Wars, in the historic
Bukovina,
representative personalities asserted in the
universal culture and spirituality, many of them Jews, showing the oneness of
Some brilliant people whose particular creative destiny bore the unmistakable
»Prim of the Jewish people s tragedy, as well as of the
Bukovina
area as a

The period between the two World Wars represents a complex and
sensitive chapter, deeply studied and analyzed but still not enough known,
