EPILOGUE
Here we have the fifth and the last book by our colleague Stoyan
Avdev who has closed his days untimely.
Similarly to his previous projects, in this study Avdev once again
scrutinizes with reverence and professional meticulousness a scarcely
explored period of the Bulgarian coinage
-
the one of Tsar Ivan
Asen
II. For the professional historians and experts in Bulgarian Medieval
numismatics it seems to be an almost entirely exhausted subject as the
academic historian works on the reign of Ivan
Asen
II are rather great in
number. It is generally believed that there are hardly any written sources
or other documents that have not been referred to for the age of one of
the most noteworthy Bulgarian sovereigns who brought the Bulgarian
State to its greatest territorial expansion
-
from
Edirne
to the Adriatic,
and from the Aegean Sea to Transylvania and the Dnieper River. Nev¬
ertheless, with his peculiar research method employed for more than
30
years to win him recognition as an excellent professional in Bulgarian
coins and the processes of the Bulgarian coin circulation, the author
once again surprises us with his erudition and knowledge exploring a
series of new written and most of all numismatic data to add to and to
present in a new manner the possibility and the consequences of the
strategic military triumph of the Bulgarian sword at Klokotnitsa over
the perfidious invasion of the Thessalonike Emperor Theodore Doukas
Comnenos
(1224 - 1230)
to the Bulgarian territory. With a comprehen¬
sive succession Stoyan Avdev reveals the profound Orthodox Christian
symbolism of the Lord's and earthly power articulated within the writ¬
ten divine word as well as within the iconography of the golden
perpera
and copper nomismata of Tsar Ivan
Asen
II.
The author has chosen a very well balanced structure including an
introduction and six chapters as the final one of them contains a cata¬
logue with representations and metrological data of one golden and

copper coins of Tsar Ivan
Asen
II.
The initial two chapters present general record on the reign of the
Bulgarian Tsar and the political affairs of the Bulgarian State, its finan-

pattern, and the employment of the Byzantine coin system with its
main coin golden
perpera
of

of weight and golden contents of
19-20
carat. They describe the peculiarities of the Bulgarian coinage
during the first half of the 13th century using copper and golden imita¬
tive coins the Venetians struck in Constantinople, the Capital city of the
Latin Empire
(1204 - 1261)
artificially established in
1204.
In Chapter Three, the essential part of his study, Avdev makes a thor¬
ough comparative
iconographie
analysis to reveal the subject coherence
of the scenes on both obverse and reverse coin sides of the golden
per¬
pera
proclaiming the bond between the celestial and the worldly king
expressed by the figure of Christ (Halkitis), "the King of glory" who
through St.
Demeter,
the patron of
Asen
dynasty, bestows the sword
of victory on the earthly triumphing sovereign. In his exposition the
author considers some new written Latin sources, as well as numerous
patterns of similar representations coming not only from the Byzantine
numismatics, but also from the monumental and icon painting.
A real surprise of rather patriotic nature and far from romantic fla¬
vour comes with the newly found and published story of the discovery
of the golden
perpera
of Tsar Ivan
Asen
II in Serbia, likely xenophobic
and anti-Bulgarian in those days
(1934 - 1935);
of the commitment of
the then Bulgarian government to protect and bring back the Bulgarian
cultural values; of the responsibility of the professional historians and
archaeologists as
Bogdan Filov,
Raphael Popov, Gabriel Katsarov, Ivan
Velkov and others, of the courage of the young Todor Gerassimov (the
future Professor in antique and Medieval numismatics in the Institute
of Archaeology) and his wife; of the tireless activity of the head of the
Numismatic depot of the Museum of Archaeology, Nicola Mushmov.
The story of the discovery, the negotiations of exchange, the exchange
proper and the way the coin crossed the Serbian border appears to be a
subject of still another monographic study.
Separate chapters pause upon the subjects represented on the copper
coins of Ivan
Asen
II bearing the same symbolic conception to show
that the power of the earthly sovereign has been given by the King of
Heavens
-
Jesus
Pantokrator
(Almighty). The topography of the single
coins and coin hoards of Ivan
Asen
II are very significant for all who
explore the Bulgarian economic history and coinage. This manner of

meticulous work is a peculiar feature of the author well traced also in
his previous books where he has employed a series of mathematical
methods quite efficient for the numismatic studies and yet a complete
terra incognita to almost all of the academic historians.
The author also pays attention to the place of issue of the golden and
copper coins of Tsar Ivan
Asen
II pointing to the city of Thessalonike.
The engravers working there were the most skilful hands in the Byz¬
antine Empire for nearly
140
years (since
1083 - 1084),
and for that
reason the Tsar's golden and copper coins remain the most beautiful
Medieval coins overwhelming with their grace.
Stoyan Avdev reveals his aesthetic reproach to the matter of his
studies by the fascinating illustrations he himself has chosen and pre¬
pared for print. His zeal strikes once again as he has added not only
some titles hard to find and scantily known authors, but also data com¬
ing from the numerous auctions via Internet

a piece of information
paid with a lot of time and patience.
We can continue to put in many more positive and true words for
the colleague and friend Stoyan Avdev. Regrettably, at times the God's
Hand chooses some of those He loves to take with Him earlier from our
earthly transient world.
As a proficient expert and professional in the field of the Medieval
Byzantine and Bulgarian numismatics, archaeology and Christian ico¬
nography for more than
30
years I do recommend this study of true
merit to specialists and all the readers eager to learn.
