Abstract
Zdeněk Nejedlý:
A Politician and Scholar in
Solitude
This book considers the life journey of the prominent Czech scholar, arts
critic and organizer, political writer, educational theorist, and politician
Zdeněk Nejedlý
(1878-1962).
The author has not limited the account to
an analysis of
Nejedlý's
involvement in public affairs and his relations with
politicians and leading figures in the arts. Instead, he also offers an unusual
view into
Nejedlý's
private life. The analysis of personal documents such as
his diaries, memoirs, and correspondence, which have so far rarely been
used by scholars, allows the author to show
Nejedlý
in his family setting
and to consider his friendships and love affairs. It is in these areas that
Ne¬
jedlý's
traits, such as his abiding longing for approval, which verged on va¬
nity and pettiness, or his tendency to get feverishly involved in various ac¬
tivities, accompanied by a lack of concentration resulting in his pursuing
many different subjects and goals at once, really come to the fore. From
his family, associates, and later also his female admirers,
Nejedlý
sought
appreciation and understanding for his work, which had become the mea¬
ning of his life. However, despite the attention he received, he often suffe¬
red from loneliness and a lack of self-confidence.
Nejedlý
was one of the greatest talents among the pupils of the histori¬
an
Jaroslav
Goli
and the aesthetician
Otakar Hostinský.
Even at the begin¬
ning ofhis scholarly career he attracted attention with works on the his¬
tory of Hussitism and, later, his collaborative work on the history of mu¬
sic and aesthetics. To this day his books on the history of pre-Hussite and
Hussite songs are well regarded. Writing biographies soon became his pre¬
ferred way to work with historical materials. He wrote about his favourite
composers, including
Gustav
Mahler, Richard Wagner,
Zdeněk Fibich,
Jo¬
sef
Bohuslav Foerster,
and
Otakar Ostrčil,
but also about the philosopher
Friedrich
Nietzsche (a book that remains one of the most noteworthy re¬
flections on this thinker in Czech), as well as about the novelists Alois
Ji¬
rásek
and
Božena Němcová.
His comprehensive monographs about
Smeta¬
na, Masaryk,
and Lenin from the
1920s
and
1930s
are generally considered
his crowning achievements as a biographer. The book on Lenin, however,
shows a certain lack of critical judgement, which is also true of the His¬
tory of the Czech Nation, written after the German occupation. The gre¬
at number of facts that
Nejedlý
was able to mine from his sources is admi¬
rable. The problem remains, however, that he was unable to distinguish the
important facts from those that were less important, or indeed marginal.
At the beginning of the twentieth century
Nejedlý innovatively
employed
methodological approaches gleaned from the works of
Wilhelm
Dilthey
and other scholars of
Geistesgeschichte.
According to
Dilthey, a
historian
should have a capacity for intuitive empathy with the world of the histori¬
cal figure he is studying and an understanding of his or her life and works.
Nejedlý
also advocated this opinion, which was ahead of its time, in the
well-known 'dispute over the meaning of Czech history'.
Nejedlý
has often been designated the 'last national revivalist' who pre¬
served the national values of the nineteenth century. Yet he was also influ¬
enced by modern schools of art that were coming to the fore in the late ni¬
neteenth and early twentieth centuries. Nor did he completely avoid the
influence of extreme individualism and pessimism. Evidence of
Nejedlý's
openness to new artistic movements is furnished by his work with the lite¬
rary critic F. X.
Salda,
which reached its peak in
1912-14,
when, together
with the novelist
Růžena Svobodová,
they published the fortnightly perio¬
dical
česká kultura.
Besides his scholarly work,
Nejedlý
also devoted him¬
self to music criticism. His analyses of works by composers he loved, espe¬
cially
Bedřich Smetana,
are particularly notable. But his assessment of tho¬
se who had not won his sympathies, especially
Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janá¬
ček, Josef Suk, Vítězslav Novák, and Bohuslav Martinů,
was rather proble¬
matic. This is particularly true of
Nejedlý's
views on
Janáček
and somewhat
also on
Novák.
But it would be unfair to judge this merely as a rancorous
relationship, for there was also a certain mutual fascination between the
critic and these composers.
Musical and literary criticism brought
Nejedlý
closer to politics. Though
impressed by his mentor,
Tomáš G.
Masaryk, Nejedlý
kept a certain distan¬
ce from Masaryk's 'Realist' party before the First World War because of
some of the party's leading policy makers (particularly
Jan Herben).
It was
not till the war that
Nejedlý
experienced a warm public reception to his
work. The
Smetana
exhibition he organized in
1917
was highly successful.
In the same year he signed the 'Czech Writers' Manifesto'. In
1918
he jo¬
ined the
Masaryk
party (now called the 'Progressive' party), and soon be¬
came a member of its leadership, remaining there until the party's demise
in
1920.
He welcomed the creation of the Czechoslovak Communist Par¬
ty in
1921,
but he also remained interested in the development of other
Czech leftist organizations, especially the National Socialist Party. In the
1920s
he criticized the Communist Party on a number of points. In his in¬
volvement in various activities in the arts and politics, he met with leftists
but also with patriotic admirers of
Masaryk.
His work in the Society for
Economic and Cultural Rapprochement with the New Russia earned him
considerable acclaim from fellow Communists. This association eventual¬
ly became the place for unofficial contacts between
Edvard
Beneš's
associ¬
ates (such as Hubert Ripka) and Soviet diplomats.
Nejedlý
did not join the Czechoslovak Communist Party till
1939,
as
an exile in Moscow after Bohemia and Moravia were occupied by Nazi
Germany. The author contemplates the reasons for
Nejedlý's
joining the
Communist movement. He rejects, for example, the literary scholar
Vác-
569
lav
Černý's
contention that
Nejedlý
joined the Party as revenge for Ma-
saryk's not appointing him to any important state positions. He analyzes
Nejedlý's
relationship with
Masaryk,
noting largely unknown facts about
their personal rapprochement in the
1930s
and also
Nejedlý's
persistent¬
ly returning to the president's legacy. He emphasizes the fact that between
the two world wars many intellectuals and artists supported the Commu¬
nist movement, for various reasons
-
from acceptance of the ideas of so¬
cial justice and equality to illusions of the possibility of governing society
scientifically, even a desire to find a simple, absolute truth and to melt into
a mass movement. In the Soviet Union
Nejedlý
witnessed the great mobi¬
lizing force of Bolshevism, but also discovered the dark sides of Stalinism
and experienced how little value human life had there.
In an atmosphere in which the very existence of the Czech nation was
threatened by expansionist Nazi Germany,
Nejedlý's
concept of linking ra¬
dical social goals with national values became particularly timely. In his
1946
speech, 'The Communists, Heirs to the Great Traditions of the Czech
Nation', he depicts the Communists as the heirs of those who had worked
for the development of the Czech nation, indeed as those who help it to
come to fruition. His work was important both in mobilizing the politi¬
cally unaffiliated to join in the struggles of the Communist Party and la¬
ter in legitimating the new regime. He himself, however, did not become
a powerful political official
-
he had neither the same kind of background
nor the influence of, for example,
Václav
Kopecký,
and, in
1951,
he suffe¬
red a permanently debilitating heart attack. He disagreed with many of the
political steps taken during that period; for example, he condemned the
school reform planned for
1953,
since it considerably negated his
1948
re-
>,
form. He spent the last years of his life in fear of becoming a victim of po¬
litical repression.
After
1948,
Nejedlý
and his fortnightly
Var: Pokrokový
list pro
veřejné
otázky
(Agitation: A progressive journal for public affairs), offered an alter¬
native to the Communist Party arts policies. For the reform Communists
of the
1960s,
with few exceptions (such as the historians
František Červin¬
ka
and
Oldřich Janeček), Nejedlý
was not an inspiration. Rather, the in¬
tellectual development of some Communist thinkers in the
1960s
(like
Ka¬
rel Kosík
and Milan
Kundera)
reflects an attempt to go beyond the narrow
framework of
Nejedlý's
conception. During the re-establishment of hard-li¬
ne Communist policy after the crushing of the 'Prague Spring' in August
1968,
the leading pro-regime historian,
Václav
Král,
distanced himself from
Nejedlý's
legacy. He argued that
Nejedlý's
ideology would open the way to
'bourgeois nationalism'.
Zdeněk Nejedlý
deserves a fair assessment, and the current publication
represents an important step in this direction. It is the first broadly based
biography of this leading proponent of the Czechoslovak Communist regime. |
