marks the time of transition from the
foreign policy conditions and aims of the Late Middle Ages to the era of
Modern history. At the turn of historical periods the idea of anti-Ottoman
alliance took on new sound and became the first international project
aimed at the weakening the hegemony positions of one state in particular
region, in this case the Ottoman Empire. Holy Roman Empire, Russia and
the Safavid Persia became the most active participants in the anti-
Ottoman alliance in the covering period. These states could form the main
body of the anti-Ottoman league, other European countries could join it
later. During
30
years the anti-Ottoman project was repeatedly close to its
embodiment, its history can be conditionally divided into
4
periods.
The first period
(1587 - 1592) -
the initiative of organizing a
broad anti-Ottoman alliance belonged to the Muslim ruler
-
Persian shah
Abbas Safavi. An incredible for the Late Middle Ages idea of such alliance
found real content in the shortest time. Russian geographical position and
its political leverage let Russian politicians to become mediators-
coordinators in the relations of shah Abbas and European leaders. This
period at large can be defined as successful
.
The second period
(1593-1599) -
was the most suitable for of
the anti-Ottoman alliance but it ended up to be the time of missed
opportunities.
The third period
(1600-1612) -
the longest and complicated
stage. Nevertheless, there still was the hypothetical possibility to form an
alliance.
The fourth period
(1613-1618)
became the critical time in
Russian foreign policy. Seeking for current profits in well-oiled machine of
international links Russia failed to take account of long-term perspective.
