This monograph is dedicated to Lew
Sapieha,
one of the most prominent politicians of
the so-called Old Polish Era that lasted from the fourteenth century until the seventeenth
century. He was born on
4
April
1557
in Ostrovno, Belarus, as the son of
Iwan Sapieha,
Vice-Starost of Orsha, and
Bohdana,
a descendant of aristocratic families of Druccy-
-Sokolińscy. Sapieha
died on
7
July
1633.
His political career developed rapidly thanks to
his close cooperation with successive Polish kings
-
Stephen
Báthory
and
Sigismund
III
Vasa.
Within a few years he significantly moved up the official ranks. He became Great
Secretary of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in
1580,
Great Clerk of the Grand Duchy in
15 81
and Vice-Chancellor of the Grand Duchy in
15 8 5.
In
15 89
he became Chancellor of
the Grand Duchy. However, the biggest achievement of his career was promotion to the
rank of
Voivode
of Vilnius in
1623
and Great Lithuanian
Hetman
in
1625.
Within one
generation he managed to establish the long-term power and wealth of the
Sapieha
family.
From his early years, he was closely associated with the
Radziwiłł
family, first as their client
and later as their protector and mentor. For many years he remained the most faithful
supporter of King
Sigismund
III and one of the most influential politicians in the Grand
Duchy of Lithuania. His position was ambiguous in many crucial situation or events,
e.g. during
Zebrzydowskie
Rebellion and during later negotiations with Sweden, since
Sapieha
did not always accept the priorities of the royal policy.
At the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries,
Sapieha
became famous for
supporting a political union with Moscow. For many years he dedicated himself to shaping
the political relations between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Grand
Duchy of Moscow. He is considered one of the most prominent diplomats during the reign
of King Stephen
Báthory
and King
Sigismund
III. For many years
Sapieha
promoted the
idea of a peaceful integration of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with the Grand
Duchy of Moscow, but when he realised that it was impossible to put his plans into effect,
he tried to convince the King to carry out a military intervention in this eastern territory
and take over the Muscovite throne. He led the diplomatic mission to Moscow twice, in
1584
and
1600.
There is no proof that he was directly involved in helping False Dmitriy I
on his way to the throne of Russia. On numerous occasions
Sapieha
took part in difficult
negotiations with Moscow. He was a participant in the military expedition to Moscow
that was led by King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vladislaus IV
Vasa,
in the
734
summary
years
1617-1618.
He was one of the authors of the Truce of Deulino, which was signed in
1618
and which concluded the Polish-Muscovite War.
Lew
Sapieha
is considered one of the most active parliamentarians during the reign of
King Stephen
Báthory
and King
Sigismund III Vasa.
He took part in at least
41
assemblies
of nobles, i.e.
sejm. Sejm
diaries reported on numerous occasions about his involvement
in the work of the assemblies. The kings many times appointed him to work on various
sejm
committees. For many years as the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Lew
Sapieha
was responsible for organising the parliamentary life in the country. He took part
in many Lithuanian assemblies, convocations and the works of the Lithuanian Tribunal.
He treated with great respect all the parliamentary institutions of the Grand Duchy
of Lithuania. For instance, he became famous for organising many campaigns for the
assemblies of nobles. As a Catholic, for many years he supported the implementation of the
Union of Brest on the Lithuanian territory.
Sapieha
was also known as a generous patron
of the Roman Catholic Church and left behind many funds intended to provide benefits
for this organisation. As a politician, he saw the matters of faith in a broader context. He
was never a supporter of religious wars, which he saw as a threat for the integrity of the
Polish State.
Sapieha s appointment to the post of Great Lithuanian
Hetman
weakened his
influence in the royal court. Entrusting him a mace, an attribute of
a hetman,
turned out
to be one of the most serious mistakes of King
Sigismund
III. The war in Livonia, which
under Sapieha s command was incompetently waged against the Swedish, contributed
greatly to the loss of this province. Despite his military failures, Lew
Sapieha
remained
very active for the rest of his life. In
1633
he was still supporting Vladislaus IV in the
Smolensk War. After his death, he was considered one of the most prominent politicians
and diplomats of the late sixteenth and the early seventeenth century.
