SUMMARY
The person to whom this monograph is dedicated, dr. Nexhat Agolli,
was born on the 9th of December
1914
in Diber. His family migrated to Tirana
in
1930.
He was a student at the Trade School of Vlora, and in
1937
earned a
law degree in Rome. Later he earned a Ph.D. at the same university. Initially he
was employed at the Tirana Court, to be transferred later as a public prosecutor
in Gjakova by the Italian authorities.
While in Gjakova he met and befriended professor Zekirja Rexha and
Emin
Duraku, who were members of the Communist Party of Albania. After
participating in protests against the Italian occupation, he was persecuted by
the police, and from that moment he joins the forces of National Liberation
Army of Albania. He is sent to his hometown region of Diber where
previously lead by his brother Qemal Agolli, himself a student of philosophy in
Florence in the period of occupied Albania. Nexhat was wounded twice during
the war. The second time he is sent for medical treatment in Tirana.
In
1944
the Fourth Albanian brigade, which eventually sees combat in
all of Western Macedonia, is formed. The brigade is later renamed the Seventh
Albanian brigade and takes part in the last battles for the liberation of
Yugoslavia. Its soldiers earn legendary fame while fighting heroically in the
Srem front.
Nexhat Agolli with his brother Qemal lead the brigade up to Presheva,
and then return to Skopje to participate in the establishment of the new
authorities. Qemal had earlier been a participant of the first ASNOM meeting,
where the Republic of Macedonia was founded.
During battles to liberate Western Macedonia, partisan detachments
which did not include any Albanians, as well as other military structures, had
committed massacres against civilians in Albanian populated areas. Plenty of
war crimes were committed, including establishments of concentration camps
in Kercove, Gostivar, the village of Grupcin near Tetovo, and especially in
Tetovo itself. The brothers Agolli publicly displayed revolt at such events, and
were directly engaged to release prisoners.
Dr. Nexhat Agolli was elected minister of social policy and vice-
president of the first postwar government of Macedonia. In the first
parliamentary elections he is elected member of the Parliament of Macedonia
and of the Constitutional Assembly of Yugoslavia. In debates during the

adoption of the first Constitution of Yugoslavia, he is distinguished with his
professional approach to issues about the future of the country.
In agreement with the Government, apart from his duties at the
ministry he is active in the process of education of Albanians in Macedonia.
Highly motivated he starts the process of overall progress of Albanians in
education, culture, sports etc.
In November
1946
he marries Adile Kumbaraxhiu from Skopje,
daughter of
Emin
Beu,
a wealthy man before the war.
He is active in the campaign to educate Albanians about the need to
remove the veil, even passing appropriate resolutions by the highest Muslim
authority of the country where is elected president in
1948.
He is also active in campaigns to educate people about the differences
between nation and faith, since various Serbian structures were interested to
continue suppressing the national awakening of Albanians.
In May of
1948
he is removed from his post at the ministry and expelled
from the party. In October of
1948
he is arrested. Investigations start by the end
of month. Meanwhile, due to lack of appropriate documentation, they are
prolonged twice. In May of
1949
UDB advises the prosecution to cease
proceedings against Nexhat Agolli since he has escaped from jail. In November
1948
his brother Qemal Agolli is arrested and sentenced to

years of prison.
He is sent to
Goli Otok
where he serves his term until June of
1962.
Nothing further is known about this politician. His eventual fate and his
place of burial remain unknown. Even today police organs claim that they do
not possess any other information about his eventual fate.
Albanians of Macedonia have not taken any initiative to clarify the
circumstances of Nexhat Agolli s death or the whereabouts of his remains.
This monograph is the first and to date the only one that addresses the
life and works of this Albanian politician.
