lhe
presentation of the concept of the teaching of Catholic religion
in schools demands at the same time: a presentation of the wider, European
context (chapter I), its earlier history in Poland (chapters II and III) and
an analysis of its aims and tasks (chapters IV-V). As concerns European
solutions, one should note that lessons of religion have a differentiated
character. Decisive here are mainly accepted assumptions of both a legal
and educational nature, and concrete didactic forms that stem from
these. The most frequently encountered legal basis are concordats agreed
between the Apostolic See and the singular countries. One also encounters
solutions based on an educational law system approved by the country. Most
frequently we have religious lessons of one of the following characters:
confessional, supraconfessional, pluriconfessional
-
multiconfessional, going
in the direction of the study of religion or having an inculturated form.
Usually the responsibility for the teaching of religion belongs to the Church
and the state. The Church decides about the content of the programs and
text-books and the formation of teachers of religion, the state: the didactic
and pedagogical dimensions.
The organization of the teaching of religion in Poland after the
regaining of independence in
1918
was not an easy process, mainly because
of the fact that the invaders left different social, cultural and educational
traditions. After many debates, controversies, quarrels and political battles
the basic form of the lesson of religion was worked out. It was above all
teaching of a confessional, Roman Catholic character, obligatory for all
pupils. Advanced work concerning the perfection of this form was stopped
by the beginning of World War II. After its end, when the communists
seized power in Poland, the process of the systematic restraining of the
teaching of religion in schools began, which led to the canceling of religion
in school, which definitely took place in
1961.
The rule of the communist
state also tried to control the places of the teaching religion that were
organized by parishes after the removal of religion from schools. Earlier
the Church took up diverse efforts towards keeping it in school, in which
Cardinal Stefan
Wyszyński,
the Primate of Poland, had a special role.
The return of the teaching of Catholic religion to Polish schools
took place in an atmosphere of rising polemics and controversy, not free

of ideological and often populist accents. The Church defended its own
stance, demonstrating educational reasons defending the presence of
Christian content in teaching and education. With the passing of time there
was a verification of the presented stands, mainly through analyses made
concerning the state of the development of the teaching of religion in Polish
schools. Not all of the earlier expressed objections were verified, but to a
certain extent also the expectations that were connected with the presence
of religion in school were not fully fulfilled. This situation gives basis for
further seeking of the possibility of working out solutions that could be the
best possible and most effective on an educational level.
The teaching of religion cannot be analyzed outside of its school
context. The school is for it the basic place of realization of its aims and
tasks, and also influences the understanding of its nature. This natural fact is
not changed by the intention of the Church law-giver, giving accent to the
autonomy of the lessons of religion, their pastoral functions, catechetical and
evangelization character. So there appear problems concerning the defining
of the character of the teaching of religion in school, which is verified in
the debate on the subject that continually is taking place. Criticized is the
catechetical and evangelizational orientation of religion lessons. Many
authors are certain that religion lessons cannot be identified with catechesis,
because they cannot fulfill all of the catechetical assumptions and aims. It
seems that, in the present state, where we do not have a verification of the
accepted assumptions of the program of the teaching of religion in Polish
schools, the discussions in this area will continue.
The teaching of religion in school takes its cognitive and educational
aims above all from Revelation, the Bible, the Liturgy and the teaching
of the Church. These are presented in program texts, such as:

in Poland). At the same time

it receives in a small degree its theological
directing from the field of education. But there are many reasons for the
greater presence of the school in the programming of religion lessons. These
are: aims concerning the education of pupils which are in common, preparing
for profession, social life and entering into the field of culture. Especially
the common educational aims of school and religion lessons are necessitated

by culture. This is because the school is by its nature an institution that
introduces culture, and the Church is interested in the integration of faith
and culture.
The analyzed aims and tasks of religion lessons are not always
cohesive in their character and not always harmoniously built. One can
notice a certain lack of coherence between generally formulated aims and
tasks that are plotted for the process of religious education and the teacher
of religion. Especially acute is the lack of taking into consideration the
process of the development of the pupil, which is one of the basic elements
of the whole process of education. Thus the demand arises to already make a
deep correction of the program of teaching religion of school, which is also
verified by the educational inefficacy of religion lessons.
