SUMMARY
The formation of Croatian church song started in the distant past.
It is connected with the names of the two brothers, the Slavic
apostles Saints Cyril
(+869)
and Methodius
(+885).
According to
their biographies, during their visit to Rome in
869
they brought
Slavic liturgical books to the altar of St. Mary s church. After pope
Hadrian
s
blessing of the books the brothers sang liturgy in Slavic
language from them in the churches of St. Petronilla, St. Andrew
and St. Paul. The Slavic language used in those books was the Old
Church Slavic language which was common to all Slavic people,
including the Croats. It is believed that the first hymns in the Old
Slavic language were written by the Saint Brothers. One of the
preserved ones is the alphabetic prayer.
The oldest record of the singing of traditional songs in Croatian
language dates from
1177.
It is tied to the arrival of the pope
Alexander III to
Zadar
(reigned from
1159
to
1181).
Cardinal
Boson, the companion of the pope Alexander III, wrote that the
pope stopped in
Zadar
on his way to Venice and was greeted with
songs in their own Croatian language . Till the 15th century the
lyrics of Croatian church songs were recorded as supplements to
glagolitic missals and breviaries without the melody which was
passed on by word of mouth. With the invention of press in the

5th century the lyrics were printed in Croatian prayers and cat¬
echisms, also without the tune.

The author of both text and tune for all songs in this songbook
is
Atanazije Jurjević.
He was born in
1590
in
Kaštel Sućurac
near
Split and died in
1660
in Zagreb. His last name can also be found
in its Latinized form Georgiceus, and in its Croatian forms as
Georgicevich,
Grgičević, Georgijević. Jurjević
gained his high
education in
Graz
where he studied logics in Jesuit course since
1st
February
1609.
After graduation,
Jurjević
was a secretary of
the bishop of
Bamberg
for a short time after which he studied
law for two years in Vienna. For his exceptional education and
the knowledge of Slavic languages the emperor Ferdinand hired

him as a consultant and occasionally entrusted him with the spe¬
cial diplomatic missions in royal courts like in Poland and Russia.
He was very successful in the diplomatic mission in Bosnia in
1627.
Jurjević
worked in Vienna,
Graz,
Zagreb and
Rijeka.
He
wrote several works of religious content, some of which are:

It is believed that
A. Jurjević
wrote some other works, but they
remained in manuscript form or were lost. Those works were
not studied or evaluated enough because all mention of them re¬
mained at the level of science information. That is why Atanazije
Jurjević
as a religious writer is still considered a mystery whose
secret should be revealed.
The songbook published here in facsimile was studied in detail
by a Slovenian musicologist
Josip Mantuanija.
The copy that he

studied was exposed in the exhibit of the old musical and theatri¬
cal works in Vienna in
1892.
That copy was in the property of a
noble family from Split but was lost or destroyed after the Vienna
exhibit.
Today there are three
fragmental
copies. The first one is preserved
in the National and University Library in Zagreb under the sig¬
nature S. M.

I have discovered the third copy in the Museum of Franciscan
monastery in Krapanj in
1998
where the copy was exposed under
the title Franciscan songbook from the 18th century. The copy
is missing the title page, so the museum founders had not recog¬
nized it as
Jurjević s
songbook. The discovery
ofthat
copy enabled
us to complete this first Croatian printed songbook, which was
done in this facsimile.
The size of the songbook is

mm. It has the title page
and

numbered pages. It is severely damaged, especially its
white edges. The notes are written in the system of two five-line
staffs. The melody is noted in the first staff and basso
continuo
in
the second staff (unencrypted basso
continuo,
without the nu¬
meration for the other three sections). In all of the songs in the
songbook the key of
F
was used for basso
continuo,
the soprano
key for the singers section, and sometimes the alt key. Between
first and second staff there are the lyrics of the first stanza, while
the lyrics of other stanzas are written in the free space after the
notation on the same or next pages. The appearance of the nota¬
tion corresponds with those that were printed in the 17th century,
i.e. the

which are known since the time of white mensural notation. The
lyrics were written in Croatian ortography of the 17th century in

as a sg, etc. Many, mostly shorter, words were connected and
printed together as a one word. The length of the lyrics varies from
song to song. Most songs have about

stanzas. However, there are
some like the Advent song Poskn bi
od Boga
(Sent by God) which
has
27
stanzas.
Jurjević
wrote different melodies for each song and there are no
identical or similar ones. The tunes are written in metric patterns
of three or four quarters. The rhythmical patterns in some bars
are not uniformed or extremely developed. The melody was built
mostly from close intervals, major and minor seconds. The ratio
of the tones is fairly big and it regularly reaches to the octave, and
in some songs to ninth. As far as the tonality is concerned,
Jurjević
had not defined strictly if the songs are in major or in minor key,
but has composed the songs in old church modes like for example
the song
Prije nego je muku
(Before the Passions of the Christ).
The lyrics of the first stanzas of all songs were composed in a way
that the first verse has a special melody which was usually imple¬
mented into the second verse varying it or transposing it higher or
lower and circling it with a cadence. The central part of the stanza
usually has a new melody with a cadence on the dominant or on
one of the supporting scale degrees. The last verse has the melody
of the first verse with a cadence on the tonic. Except creating me¬
lodic lines by using imitation of previous motives he also builds
melodies by confronting their rhythm and melody, and one might
say that he did not know the way of constructing a melody line in
an arc in which many European church songs were composed.

short poems were composed in a time of European musi¬
cal baroque and that can be heard in some songs. For example, the
song No.

seems like it is a distant reflection of a familiar Lent
song

which is a small
masterpiece of a vocal miniature.
Since the melodic motives are regularly not connected but sepa¬
rated with pauses (which is less appropriate to this kind of tradi¬
tional singing) and since the atmosphere of these songs is artis¬
tically alike to the songs in accompanied liturgical madrigals of
the baroque period, I believe that
Jurjevićs
songs are ought to be
considered as the first liturgical madrigals with Croatian lyrics.
