Summary
Summary
Jaroslav Bakeš
(1871-1930).
The Physician, who has been Forgotten
This study follows in detail, based on archival materials and literature, the
life and career of Dr.
Jaroslav
Bakes
(1871-1930),
physician, surgeon, health-care
organizer, designer of medical instruments and devices, university professor and
professional writer, as well as traveller, nature and art collector, lover of
automobiles and hunting.
J. Bakes came from a distinguished Catholic family in
Blansko
(originally
German-Czech) whose members contributed to cultural, scientific and social
progress in Moravia. The study also focuses on them because they were an
important factor in the formation of the doctor's personality. His grandfather
was
Jindřich (Heinrich)
Wankel
(1821-1897),
son of a provincial official in Prague.
He worked from
1849
to
1883
in the
Blansko
region as a physician in the service
of the prince, land owner and industrial entrepreneur Charles Edward Hugo
Salm-Reifferscheidt, but was chiefly renowned as a pioneer of several sciences
in the Czech lands: as an archaeologist (in Moravia the field is rightly named
after his father), anthropologist, paleontologist, paleoethnologist and cave
researcher. The cultural life was concentrated around
Wankel
not only in
Blansko,
but also in
Olomouc,
where he moved after retirement. Here he contributed
significantly to the founding of the first Czech Patriotic Museum in Moravia,
its collections, the museum association and magazine.
His daughters, the eldest
Lucie
(1853-1935),
Jaroslav's mother, and the
younger
Karla, Vlasta
and
Magdalena
were devoted to ethnography, the collection
of Moravian folk embroideries and laces, and were worthy of the Czech-Slave
Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague
(1895).
In
Blansko
in
1870
Lucie Wanklová
married
František (Xaver) Bakeš
(1833—
1917),
a native of Saratice near of
Brno. Bakeš
elder worked as a teacher, but his
interest was music and folklore. Over the years he became the owner of estates
in
Ořechovičky
(now part of
Orechov,
the village near Brno), a member of the
Moravian land council in Brno, a member of several major agricultural
organizations and agricultural industry representative companies in Brno.
Jaroslav Bakeš
did not attend regular school and was educated at home in
Ořechovičky.
He then studied at classical Czech gymnasia in Brno and
Olomouc
(1880-1888)
and the University of Vienna Medical School
(1888-1895),
where
he graduated on
27
July
1895
as a doctor of general medicine. He performed his
military service already during his studies. In
1896
he returned to Vienna where
he prepared for a future independent medical profession: He audited for two

Lékař, na něhož se zapomnělo

six-month terms in internal medicine at the Leopold
Schrötter
Clinic and the
Hermann Widerhofer Children's Hospital. From April
1897
he worked as an
operating intern and clinical assistant at the Imperial First Surgical Clinic and
in the
Eduard
Albert Operational Institute in the General Hospital. From the
very beginning of his professional career he was a member of an elite group of
talented surgeons. In March
1899
he was elected as a full member of the Imperial
Society of Doctors in Vienna and wrote his first contribution to a reputable
medical journal. Professor Albert died at the end of September
1900
and although
Bakeš's
work was evaluated positively, he decided to leave the prestigious
department. He entered the competition for chief physician and director of the
new Public General Hospital in
Třebíč
and obtained the position at the start of
1902.
Before starting his new position he completed a ten-month internship at
the Ernst
Wertheim
Women's Clinic in Vienna.
Bakes brought the tradition of the Albert School to West Moravia. Soon
after beginning the
Třebíč
stage of his life and work
(1902—1909)
he was hailed
as an excellent surgeon primarily of gynaecological, kidney, stomach and
gallbladder diseases. He looked for new surgical procedures, created necessary
tools and insisted on well-organized medical work on the part of himself and
his colleagues. He lectured at domestic and international medical meetings,
published annual reports of noteworthy activities conducted by hospitals and
the Czech Technical University in Brno, qualified as a private lecturer in the
field of first aid for unexpected accidents and illnesses in the course of technical
activities
(1906).
As early as
1908
Jaroslav Bakeš
was appointed chief physician of the newly
established third, and later second surgical department at the Moravian hospital
of St. Anna in Brno, where he worked for thirteen years
(1909-1922).
Even at
the new location he proved to be a very capable surgeon who looked after not
only the course of the operation itself, but also preparation of his patients and
aftercare. During World War I he worked not only in his department, but also
most likely in military hospital facilities. He was renowned for these activities.
After
1918
a new Faculty of Medicine of the University of Brno was established,
which right away influenced the further development of the provincial hospital
and its surgery department. On
15
September
1919
the Department of Surgery
was official established, which would have its own authority and took over the
space of the current departments of
J. Bakeš.
He had to give his place to Julius
Petřivalský,
recently arrived from Prague, who was also named a professor.
Bakeš
never received the title of university professor.
The new, and unfortunately the last place where
Jaroslav Bakeš
worked, was
the Provincial Surgical Hospital in Brno at Yellow Hill
(Žlutý
kopec No.
5),
which had been adapted since
1922.
There he devoted himself to his profession
with enthusiasm and sought to progress in treatment methods. From
1923
he

here initiated for example X-ray irradiation of malignant tumours. With his
mother
Lucie
and several colleagues he founded the Consolation House
Association
(1928)
to bring together physicians and laymen, which aimed to
improve the organization of care for cancer patients and initiate advanced
research into the disease. He did not live to see the results of his labour as in
1930
he died. But the idea was brought to fruition by his mother
Lucie
together
with the Association. In January
1935
the Provincial Surgical Hospital was opened
next door at
Žlutý

featuring the first
anticancer
institute in
Czechoslovakia called the
Masaryk
Hospital Consolation Home (now the
Masaryk
Memorial Cancer Institute). President
Tomáš G.
Masaryk,
among others, endowed
about
2.5
million crowns towards its establishment and
Bakeš's
left approximately
two-thirds of his estate.
Dr.
Jaroslav
Bakes with his work educated followers and founded his own
school (from which came
Antonín Novotný, Bohdan Hejduk and Jaroslav
Kofránek
among others). He invented or perfected certain procedures for
operations, including interventions in the stomach, gallbladder, intestines,
kidneys and hernias, and also created new instruments and aids
-
for example
the ekarteur, the gastrotriptor, dilators, illuminated choledochopapiloscope and
a device for warm saline solution. He published in
45
scientific papers mainly
in the field of abdominal surgery, lectured at surgical conferences in Berlin,
Breslau,
Brussels, Lisbon and Prague, and attended lectures in Vienna, Prague
and Brno. He often appeared with information at meetings of Jihlava-Znojmo
and Brno regional doctors.
Bakes had a lifelong passion for collecting minerals, travelling and hunting,
he also knew a great deal about dog breeding and weapons, sport and automobiles,
and he collected sculptures and books. He undertook several zoological and
hunting expeditions, including a major journey across Canada in
1927.
On a later
hunting expedition in Poland in
1930
he fell ill and died. Experts between the
wars said that Bakes collected two valuable private collections of natural science
in Czechoslovakia
—
several thousand minerals, systematically built, cataloged
and scientifically processed, and zoological exhibits. The public had the opportunity
to see these trophies for the first time in the Anthropos Pavilion in the Moravian
diluvial fauna section
(1928)
and the Hunter Days in Brno
(1929).
Bakes sold a
collection of minerals to the Moravian provincial committee
(1922)
and bequeathed
part of his zoological collections to the provincial museum.
The monographic study has twenty-one annexes, which include some of the
documents related to the topic as well as a bibliography of
Jaroslav
Bakes. Also
included is a bibliography of his grandfather, J.
Wankel,
which has not been
published elsewhere.
