The Challenges of National Unity
The School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason
University is very pleased to launch its Monograph Series with this
remarkably timely and insightful work by Professor John
Paden,
one
of the world s foremost scholars of Nigerian politics. Writing about
ongoing conflicts need not be only an academic activity; it can also
be a form of practical intervention. In this case, it is an invitation to
deploy high-level scholarship in a strategic policymaking process
that will strengthen the unity of Nigeria. Many in the international
community and within Nigeria itself assert that the country is destined
for unmanageable collapse, but Professor
Paden
explains how Nigeria
can respond to its current crises and tensions in ways that will serve
the interests of the state, with its diverse citizenry, as well as the world
at large.
We are delighted to participate through the Monograph Series
in international —indeed, global—conversations about the shape of our
world. This series will provide a wide variety of case studies of conflicts
that are amenable to mitigation and resolution. Such case studies will
be of use not only to policymakers but also to students as they prepare
