King Milutin (1282-1321)
The monography King Milutin presents the first comprehen-
sive study of Serbian King Stephen Uros II Milutin and his times.
The book is conceived as a modern study of the key historical
and historiographical issues pertaining to a crucial period in the
medieval history of Serbia, the second half of the 13th and the
first decades of the 14th century. It highlights the central prob-
lems in related historiography, regardless of whether they stem
from inadequate editions of the main Serbian sources or from
obsolete methodological approaches and oversimplified schol-
arly opinions. It aims to revisit the methodology of studying the
Serbian Middle Ages in an attempt to revive this long neglected
field of study.
The book addresses these problematic issues through a care-
ful reading of primary sources - Byzantine, Serbian and Latin -
and offers a reassessment of often outdated and fossilized schol-
arly attitudes, some of which have been echoed uncritically over
generations of scholars.
The monograph is divided into three major sections:
— Before Milutin s accession to the throne offers an overview
of the situation in Serbia, Serbia s international position in the
middle decades of the 13th century and an analysis of the crucial
issues of the early days of the future Serbian king Milutin. After

a careful reading of relevant primary sources, it is argued that
Milutin s father, King Uros I (1243-1276) was not as fierce an
enemy of the Byzantine state in Nicaea as is unanimously claimed
in secondary literature, but that he was, in fact, a faithful subject
and ally of Emperor John III Vatatzes, as a George Akrpolites
poem on the emperor s death, until recently completely over-
looked in modern scholarship, makes perfectly clear.
Of particular interest is the question of the marriage alli-
ance between young prince Milutin and Anna, the daughter of
Emperor Michael VIII Palailogos, and the problem of Milutin s
marriages, in general. The argument is put forward, based pri-
marily on a close reading of George Pachymeres History, that
the marriage alliance between the two young offspring of the
rulers of Serbia and Byzantium was concluded in 1269 or 1270,
and that Milutin and Anna were engaged, but that the marriage
itself was never carried out in reality, mainly due to the great
political earthquake caused by Emperor Michael Vlll s signing the
union with the Church of Rome in Lyon in 1274. In a changed po-
litical environment, Milutin married the daughter of the ruler of
Thessaly John II Angelos, and then, some time in or immediately
after 1276, when Milutin and his elder brother Dragutin ousted
their father King Uros from the throne, he married Elisabeth of
Hungary, the sister of his brother Dragutin s wife, Katherine.
With Anna Terter of Bulgaria becoming Milutin s third wife after
another political turmoil caused by the death of Michel VIII and
of the rise of Tatar Khan Nogai s might in the summer of 1284,
five-year-old Byzantine princess Symonis was to become the
fourth wife of the 45-year-old King Milutin in the spring of 1299.
It was left to Emperor Andronikos II and his associates to device
a political sophism to explain that only Milutin s first wife, the
Thessalian princess was legitimate, and that the Serbian king s
alliances with Elisabeth of Hungary and Bulgarian Anna Terter
were extramarital relations, thus making Symonis his legitimate
second wife.

Summary: King Milutin (1282-1321)
— The central section of the book, which covers the period
of Milutin s reign as King of Serbia, is subdivided into two major
parts in order to cover the first part of Milutin s rule (1282-1299)
and its second phase (1299—1321), following the Serbian king s
crucial turn toward Byzantium and his alliance with the Byzantine
emperor, a political move that changed the future of the Serbian
medieval states in the decades and generations to come. A vari-
ety of issues are scrutinized and the information from the main
Serbian source — The Lives of Serbian Kings and Archbishops by
Archbishop Danilo and his continuators — carefully examined,
especially regarding the date of Milutin s conquest of northern
Macedonia. In contrast to prevailing opinion, it is argued that
the Serbian king did not occupy the vast territory on the Serbian-
Byzantine boarder immediately after his takeover of the supreme
power within the Serbian states, especially when bearing in mind
the peculiar triumvirate of Milutin, his brother Dragutin and their
mother, Queen Jelena, which continued to exist for almost a
quarter of a century after 1282, along with the problems on the
northern boarders of Dragutin s realm at that time.
In the second part of this section and of King Milutin s rule,
two key questions are addressed in particular: Milutin s skilful
diplomacy, which did not compromise his determination to ally
himself completely with the Byzantine Empire, and the ques-
tion of his successor, which troubled the last decade of the
king s reign and was left practically unresolved until the death
of Milutin on October 29, 1321. Although this second problem
threatened Milutin s political legacy, the eventual accession to
the throne of his eldest son, Stephen Dečanski, ensured Serbia s
position within the Byzantine sphere of influence and paved the
way for Milutin s grandson Stephen Dušan to use to his benefit
the civil war in Byzantium in order to become the lord of vast
Byzantine territories and to proclaim himself Emperor of the
Serbs and Greeks during the middle of the 14th century.

— The concluding section is devoted to an analysis of King
Milutin s personality as reflected in both his deeds and in the pri-
mary documentary sources of Milutin s own charters. The king s
almost hectic building activity after his alliance with Byzantium
in 1299 is placed into a more accurate historical perspective.
The significance of King Milutin s achievements and, maybe even
more importantly, of his image as a sainted ruler for the policies
of his son and grandson are explored in the last chapter of the
book.
