adam_text | Widowed by the death in the World War of
her young husband, whom she had married
in her teens,
Gina Kaus
and her two children
were for a while adopted by a rich uncle. In
his Viennese house, for the first time she lived
in luxury, learning to entertain diplomats and
financiers. Here also she began to write, her
first work a sharp social comedy entitled
Thieves in the House.
A few years later, however, after an unsuc¬
cessful second marriage,
Gina
Kaus s circum¬
stances obliged her to think of her pen as a
means of making a living for her two small
boys. She founded a journal, The Mother, de¬
voted to the problems of child-rearing. The
magazine was a success from the start, and the
editor s advice became so popular that she
established regular consultation hours in
which she discussed with hundreds of women
their marital and maternal troubles.
Meanwhile, she continued her creative writ¬
ing.
Toni, her
second play, was written in
three days and three nights, and within a fort¬
night was accepted for production by the
great Berlin director
Reinhardt. Her
first
novel was written shortly after that, and her
next novel, Luxury Liner, an international
success, was translated into English and be¬
came an American best-seller.
Then came Hitler, and
Gina
Kaus s works
were banned by the Nazi government in Ger¬
many. Living in Austria, she turned for solace
to the past, delving into the history of the
18th century and eventually writing Catherine
the Great, which was a Literary Guild selec¬
tion.
MELANIE
is her most recent novel, the
most tempestuous and character-revealing,
and the alert reader will find in it elements
from the author s experience with Nazi Ger¬
many and with 18th century Russia.
Gina Kaus
is now living in Hollywood, tak¬
ing up residence to become an American citi¬
zen.
MELANIE
may be said to begin her
American career proper.
