By typing ancient DNA the discovery and validation of biological kinship between individuals of an archaeological burial site becomes possible. Molecular analysis of a random sample of 161 individuals from the early medieval (6th - 7th century AD) graveyard of Weingarten (Baden-Württemberg; Germany) were carried out to obtain information about the social structure of this historic population. One of the main points of interest concerned the determination of the marriage system practised since affiliation of individuals through marriage constitute an important part of social relations in any society |
