introduction to the subject—comprehensive yet approachable.
Cognitive Grammar treats human languages as consisting solely of
semantic units, phonological units, and symbolic units (conventional
pairings of phonological and semantic units). Like Construction
Grammar, and unlike many mainstream linguistic theories, Cognitive
Grammar extends the notion of symbolic units to the grammar
of languages. Langacker s book Cognitive Grammar presented
a synthesis that drew together and refined the descriptive and
theoretical notions developed in this framework over the course
of three decades.
That volume was overly long and comprehensive for use in a
one-term course or for those seeking a brief introduction to the
framework. Consisting of parts I and II of Cognitive Grammar, this
abridged version makes the central ideas separately and affordably
available for those purposes. This convenient edition presents
Langacker s authoritative work as an essential cornerstone of
cognitive linguistics as that field continues to evolve.
