Resume
In a collective monograph titled From history of Ukrainian-Polish relations in
a second half of XlX-beginning of XX century , based on the archival materials of
Ukraine, Poland, and other sources, authors showed an understudied topic in the
scientific works on the problem of mutual relations between these two Slavic nations.
Authors considered that between these nations, throughout ages, along with peaceful
coexistence, appeared tensions and conflicts. However, hatred to foreign conqueror,
which was experienced by both nations in the past century, and also straggle, for
national independence and creation of their own countries drew them closer.
This book discusses process of national self-identification of Russian-
Ukrainians and strengthening of Polish positions in
Galicia
in the second half of
XIX
century, explores mutual reliance in social and economic factors in the relations
between Polish and Ukrainian people during the times of Austro-Hungarian Empire.
They proved that in the second half of
XIX
century-beginning of XX century,
international tensions increased. In
Galicia,
as is maintained by the authors, this was
in part caused by unequal division of resources between different ethnic/national
groups. Here, Ukrainians suffered from lack of land, were limited in their rights to
own forests, valleys, and landfills. Many of the Ukrainians were unemployed, the
government limited their right to participate in local government, create Ukrainian
educational and cultural institutions.
Despite the break of Austro-Hungarian Empire, which took place in the final
stage of WWI, recreation of Polish statehood, and state-forming processes in
Ukraine, as a result of the past, the tensions persisted. This book emphasizes the fault
of polish government for the loss of western Ukrainian National Republic and it s
national politics of assimilation toward Ukrainians. The authors portrayed the
struggle of Ukrainians of Eastern
Galicia
against occupying Polish government,
which in the late 20th of the XX

put a lot of effort to liquidate civil freedoms,
limited cultural and economic development of the region, tried to assimilate
Ukrainians into Polish culture. They limited Ukrainians of freedom of religion. This
book talks about religious-cultural assimilation of national minorities, which came as
a result of announcing Roman-Catholic belief as chief among religions in Poland. In

a similar vein, the book, based on convincing facts, showed the straggle for
preservation of Greek-Catholic traditions and its local Ukrainian character. Also, the
book discusses the acts of Polish local government about the decrease of the
influence from Orthodoxy, which was considered an important characteristic of
Ukrainian national life. In the 30th of the XX

based on this aim, many of the
Orthodox churches were ruined and turned into Catholic kostels.
Also, the authors state that tensions between Ukrainians and Poles were being
replaced by good-neighborly relations. The facts given in the book show the friendly
relations between two nations, which were particularly evident on every-day level. In
the period between WWI and WWII, efforts took place to restore Polish-Ukrainian
dialog. The book emphasizes that the most effective among these was famous in
bibliography normalization of Ukrainian-Polish relations in
1935.
It was a result of
many efforts by Ukrainian and Polish politicians. It will be interesting for the reader
to learn not only about the conflicts between these nations but also about Polish-
Ukrainian efforts for peaceful relations in
Galicia
in between-war period.
The monograph had a historical analysis of complex Ukrainian-Polish relations
during WWII, especially events on Volyn in
1943,
the place and role in this process
for Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Ukrainian Rebel Army, Polish political
institutions and military formations. Authors contend that during German occupation,
relations between Ukrainian and Polish populations changed into animosity, and
showed themselves through military conflicts. This was used by Soviet and Polish
leadership to carry out harsh actions in a context of solving the international conflict.
Based on the new archival materials, the book supports that the so called declared
treaty between the government of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and Polish
committee of national freedom
(1944),
voluntary movement of Ukrainians from
Poland to Ukraine and poles from Ukraine to Poland turned into forceful deportation
of two neighboring nations and life tragedy. It is also noted that this was the effort to
solve complex territorial, international and ideological problems by methods which
were common to totalitarian system. The book also showed the politics of Polish
government toward Ukrainian minorities in
1947-1960,
in particular, deportation of

Ukrainian population into Western and Northern lands of Poland under an action
called
Visla.
The novelty in this monograph is the discussion of political aspects of Polish-
Ukrainian peace agreement. The book formulates a conclusion about the realization
by Polish political elites the similarity of geopolitical interest of Ukrainian and Polish
peoples which should foster their mutual struggle about totalitarian regimes and
creation of independent republics Poland and Ukraine. The monograph presents and
analysis of ethnic geographic changes in Ukrainian lands in XX c, also strong
examples of close relations between these nations, collaboration and mutual support
are discussed. Monograph ends by the portrayal of Ukrainian-Polish relations in the
areas of education, science, and culture during the years of Polish and Ukrainian
independence, shows how their dynamic development fosters further closeness
among two nations and their entering of European institutions.
