Sixty years ago, up on the
Grammos mountainrange
at the Albanian bor¬
der, the last act of the Greek civil war took place. A war, which has been the
most serious conflict in the recent European
afterwar
history. Immediately af¬
ter its termination, thousands of members of the defeated Greek communist
army found themsleves in communist countries, along with their relatives and
sympathisers. In the autumn of
1949,
over
12 000
Greek emigrants settled in
Czechoslovakia. They were the predecessors of the present Greek community
in the Czech Republic living here sixty years already and to which over
4 000
people endorse.
The Greek Civil war was literally fratricidal. It devided the society deeply
and marked irrecoverably each city and each village. From the political point
of view, this civil war was a typical example of an extreme society polari¬
sation aswell. Another concrete result of this war was the exodus of
100 000
sympathisers of defeated communists to the former peoples democratic states.
The biggest group of Greek emigrants aimed to the exotic Tashkent in the So¬
viet Uzbekistan. The second biggest group of Greek emigrants, approximately
7 000
adults and
5 000
children, aimed to Czechoslovakia. Already from spring
1948
to summer
1949
a children group got there as the first one. The Gottwald s
regime welcomed these children of the revolution with excitement. Children
arrived by trains in a miserable and sorrowful condition. They were provided
with exemplary childcare and more then fifty children s homes, mostly in nati¬
onalized mansions or in different spa centers, were established for their needs.
The Greek adult emigrants arrived to Czechoslovakia by seven train transports
during the autumn
1949.
Most of them arrived from the Yugoslavian city of
Buljkes where they had found refuge with Tito s approval during the civil war.
The second group of Greek emingrants had a much longer journey: using Po¬
lish boats they sailed from the Albanian port of Duress and through Gibraltar
they arrived to the Polish port of Gdynia and from there by trains to Czecho¬
slovakia. According to the KKE leaders wishes, the emigrants should remain
concentrated in areas morphologically similar to their native ones, that means,
similar to the Greek north-west highland, because of their pending early return
to their homeland
-
as they hoped. For this purpose, several tens of villages and
settlements were chosen in the remoted and isolated districts of
Žamberk, Kr¬
nov, Jeseníky.
A large part of the Sudeten-German community had been moved
away from these areas three years before. However, the Czechoslovak indus¬
trial boom demanded new working power and the factories were providing the

people with visions of better earnings and accommodation facilities. Therefore,
the largest part of the Greek emigrants abandoned their original village settle¬
ments and moved to the urban settlements in Ostrava,
Karviná, Brno, Trutnov
or
Krnov.
During several years the Greeks successfully copped with Czech so¬
ciety. Shepherds and peasants originally, they became qualified workers. While
the children were studying in Czech schools since the beginning of the
60s,
the adults mastered the Czech language gradually and in many aspects they
adapted to the Czech lifestyle not assimilating with the locals at the same time.
In the present Czech view of those Greeks a stereotype prevails. That they
were communists sympathisers retired in the Czech republic after their defeat
in Greece. A closer look at the Greek community shows, that this community
is a very various ensemble of people. Greek emigrants were different not only
in their origin but also ethinacally and linguistically. The Greek emigration was
not even one unified ensemble regarding the policy. For example in the first
phaze of emigration to Czechoslovakia, several captives of communist guerilla
from the Roajal army could be found. Many of them tried to escape to the West
in the 50s with the Greek embassy s support in Prague. Other captives were
concentrated in the work camp
Vír
near Brno as untrustworthy elements .
The pro-communist political life of most emingrants became very roaring
in quite a short term. The first big bang in the frame of the Greek emigration
happened in
1956,
when the
stalinist
leader Nikos Zachariadis was discharged
from the head of the exiled KKE. His exclusion from the party was the result
of intervention from high fraternal parties representatives from the socialist
countries. By this step not only the Greek emigration in Czechoslovakia, but
also
ín
other socialist countries, became divided into supporters of a new leader
called
Kostas Kolijannis
and supporters of the former leader Nikos Zacharia¬
dis. A year after the proclamation of the military dictatorship in Greece (April
1967)
the exiled KKE was heartly split for the second time. In February
1968
the party s leadeship resolved into the pro-Moscow group under Kolijannis and
into the reformative wing under Dimitris Partsalidis. This split culminated du¬
ring the Prague spring. This event had an impact on the Greek emigration s life
not only in Czechoslovakia. Major part of Greek communists in Czechoslova¬
kia sided with
Alexandr
Dubček.
It s not difficult to presume the effect of their
choise after the normalisation establishment. Both Czech and Greek reforma¬
tive communists were excluded from the party, discharged from high positions
and released from their prestigous professions.
The Greek civil war study and the Greek emigration study in former soci¬
alist countries started, in a less extent, fully in the end of the
90s.
At first, the

interest
of the historians was focused on the British and the United States ar¬
chives. They were drawing also from memoirs and witnesses the war protago¬
nists left behind. Recently, a turn towards the less based witnesses of simple
war participants has become more distinctive. Moreover, the interest in archive
materials from former socialist countries is becoming more and more stronger.
Almost noone would be able to create a compact image of the Greek civil war
course or the Greek political emigration formation without them.
