adam_text | The Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life lies relatively near to the heart of medieval Lviv, on the scenic hills of
Shevchenko
Hai
(Grove).
For more than
40
years, architectural landmarks from the 18th/early 20th cc have been recreated here to represent the
historic and ethnographic areas of Western Ukraine, ie Boiko and Hutsulian areas, Bukovyna and Pokuttia, Lemko area and
Podillia, Volhynia and Polissia. Also displayed in the Museum are two complexes, ie the Transcarpathian
Flatlands,
and the
Lviv Region.
The architectural landmarks brought here are showcased in their traditional environment, ie as rural ensembles. As
soon as you step inside the Museum you find yourself standing amidst a Boiko village with its multitude of huts with cattle
sheds and threshing barns, a communal oil press and sawmill, a bee garden, and a water mill beside a pond, together with
a church, school, and even a communal bell in the village centre. Here is our past, within touching distance, inviting us to
perceive what the multi-talented Carpathian peoples used to wear, how they maintained their farmsteads, studied, prayed,
and celebrated holidays.
Even the first hut in a village street will lure you into entering into its yard, attracting with its fairytale-like archaism.
Having a framework of a fairly small size, covered with a straw hat roof and featuring a gallery along the whole length of
its
façade,
this hut exhibits a proportional and harmonious silhouette, and is a quite astounding example of woodworking
craftsmanship
-
a true ode to the folk master.
However, this is only the beginning of the exposition, and beckoning ahead are
50
hectares of vivid, colourful and lively
ethnography. Relying on the Museum road, and sometimes off the beaten path, you will be transported back hundreds of
years. Also, and most importantly, whichever route you choose, each and every one will lead you to a temple. The Museum
boasts six of them
-
more than can be found in any other Ukrainian
seansen.
The Church brought from the village of
Kryvky in the
Turka
district and dating from
1763
is among the most precious landmarks, and is a masterpiece of the
Boiko architecture. Its triple framework is simple, but nevertheless imparts a sense of harmony and demonstrates a strong
cohesion of all its details and gracious lightness. The skill of Ukrainian architects without a doubt reached its peak in creating
such structures. This is a delicious realization of the ideals nurtured by many a generation. This church was the first wooden
architectural exhibit in Lviv, making the dreams of Halycian intelligentsia of an open air museum come true.
The idea of having one of the finest wooden churches moved to Lviv first came to Marion Sventsytsky, a scholar and
enthusiast, and Mykhailo Drahan, an art critic. Through the support of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky. an outstanding
champion of all things Ukrainian, this project was given life. By
1930,
the church was no longer functioning, as a new and
larger one had been built in the village. Thus, in the summer of that year, this relic was dismantled and brought to Lviv by
railway. At first
65
horse-drawn carts were employed to transport it, piece by piece, from the village of Kryvky to Nyzhnia
Yablunka station! Carpathian masters assembled it on its present site in Lviv, and the iconostasis was fashioned from icons
held in the National Museum.
It was only in
1966
that the idea of creating
a seansen
in Lviv received its second wind. Ethnographers and Museum
architects, together with devoted enthusiasts, explored at great length the architectural landmarks of West Ukraine.
During their intensive research expeditions, they studied the traditional patterns of material culture, issued certificates
and datasheets for structures, and created catalogues detailing their dimensions and descriptions. They selected typical
buildings from each ethnographic region for the museum exposition, taking into account their condition as well as the
artistic and aesthetic value. The landmarks were identified and labelled and dismantled to be reassembled on-site by
restoration builders.
In such a manner, the Hutsulian, Pokuttia, and Lemko micro-villages emerged, and featured the most typical structures.
By
1972,
the Museum had collected more than
20
landmarks with furnished interiors. A feel of the village s atmosphere and
a holistic picture was attained by the successful integration of displayed structures into the ambient landscape. However, by
far the largest achievement lay in the ideal placement of ethnosectors through the use of different terrain configurations, ie
hills, ravines, and clearings. The Flat Area Transcarpathia complex occupies the most sunny sector of the Museum: cherries
flourish here earlier than anywhere else within the Museum area; and to reach the mountainous
Hutsulian area, where the woodcutters kolybas, sub-alpine meadow farmsteads, and the exotic
closed yard stand, a long walk is required inside the
seansen.
To date, the Lviv open air Museum has amassed
124
architectural exhibits, each having its
own legend and history, resulting in a real life local chronicle .
In the centre of the Museum area, next to the wooden architectural pearls, rises a stone
structure. This is a Museum depository where the old treasures are held. There are more than
20,000
of them here: household items, leather articles, unique embroidery patterns and
exquisite pottery, a collection of rare old books and manuscripts
(150
items), and many icons.The
Museum restorers continuously are working to protect these books and manuscripts from the
inexorable ravages of time and return to life old Ukrainian paintings. Students of Art schools are
frequent visitors here
-
they study embroidery, carving, and painting patterns. Subsequently,
these young people can be seen at the crafts festivals or Easter Haivkas, organised by the
Museum, wearing modern shirts with old style embroidery
-
thus the old traditions continue
and are going strong.
The Festivals held in the
seansen
always attract huge numbers of visitors and are very
vigorous and colourful: old crafts come alive here: bakers display their fancy loaves and rolls,
and beekeepers offer their amber-coloured honey. Such festive events as Easter Haivkas or
Christmas Verteps attract thousands of visitors, transforming the audience into emotional
participants of traditional folklore festivals.
The vital role the Open-air Museum plays today cannot be overestimated. Placed on the
crossroads of the past and the present, it makes a deep-rooted bridge into the future, being a
centre of preservation and the study of the finest patterns of folk culture, a live representation
of our accomplishments and an oasis offering an atmosphere of the national self-recognition.
