The study deals with the archaeological materials of
22
Middle Paleolithic
sites of the Dniester and Prout rivers watershed territory obtained over more than
half-century of archaeological investigations. The integrated explorations of allied
sciences researchers carried out on
4
multilayer sites (Molodova
1 & 5,
Ketrosy,
Korman
4)
yielded valuable data on paleogeography of the Upper Pleistocene and
laid the foundation of geochronology and paleoecological reconstruction surveys.
The absolute chronology includes only

controversial radiocarbon dates derived
from the sites Molodova
1 & 5,
Korman
4,
Bouzduyeny

The basic dating conclusions
depend mainly on geochronological data.
Chapter
1.
General sources survey and the sites research history.
In this chapter the informative value of the sites is estimated and their
classification based on cultural layers preservation degree is presented. The brief
history and the stages of the research are summarized.

2.
Geological-geomorphologic characteristics of the region and
climate-stratigraphy data.
The chapter deals with general observation of geological-geomorphologic
prospecting of the region, which has been an area for multiannual geological and
interdisciplinary investigations.

Some common issues and problems of the Middle Paleolithic
research.
Reviewed in the chapter is the present state of a number of essential scientific
issues (the notions of the Mousterian, Levallois and the nature of stone industries
variability in particular) promoted by numerous papers being published. The chapter
also introduces some methodical innovations applied by the author to the description
and analysis of stone artifacts.

The Dniester region sites.
This chapter is devoted to the description of the sites situated in the valley of
the Dniester including the multilayer ones
(Stinka

Ketrosy, Molodova
1 & 5,
Korman

grotto Vikhvatintsy) which existed within a long period of time in the Late and
partly Middle Pleistocene (viz. from

to

kyr BP). Many of these yielded plentiful
faunal remains and numerous stone artifacts.

The sites of the Prout valley.
Described in the chapter are sites located on the left bank of the Prout valley,
the cultural layers of which were traced mainly in the caves (Dourouitori, Buzduzhany

1,2,3).
These also existed in the first half of the Late Pleistocene and the
second part of the Middle Pleistocene (viz. from

to

kyr BP) All the sites in the
grottos yielded plentiful fauna and numerous stone artifacts.

Summary
Conclusion
The coexistence of two individual variants of stone industries has been traced
in the region. The first one (Molodova
1 & 5,
Ketrosy, caves Boutechty, Trinka
1 & 2
etc.) corresponds to the Typical Mousterian, the second (Osypka, Chipot
1-2,
Stynka
1,
cave Buzduzhany etc.)
-
to the peculiar variant of the Middle Paleolithic
(Stinka
industry) with its numerous notched and denticulate pieces, Aurignacian scrapers
and foliate bifaces. The two stone industries were based on the utilization of the
identical raw materials and their creators cohabited in similar ecosystems. Open-air
sites as well as cave sites are found in both variants. Considering all the particularities
of the investigated sites the survival strategy was the same and depended on the
environment. A year is assumed to have been divided into two main seasons: during
the cold one (winter) small groups of people lived in grottos and caves while in the
warm period bigger groups ranged down river valleys hunting and gathering. On the
opinion of the majority of researchers dealing with the problem of origin of the local
Upper Paleolithic the region yielded transitional assemblages which were basis for
the local Upper Paleolithic.
