SUMMARY
The 300th anniversary of the
1683
rescue of Vienna was
followed by numerous publications devoted to the king of
Poland who repelled the Turkish invasion, John III
Sobieski.
Sobieski,
who led Poland between
1674
and
1696,
was an
ambitious though unlucky politician and a patron of art, who
possessed a keen aesthetic sensibility.
This book is an intellectual history of John III and his
court, which hitherto has not been well known. Here the
king is shown in the role of a patron of science and
scholars. This study is a continuation of the author s
previous book in which the future monarch s young years
are discussed (K. Targosz,
Jana Sobieskiego
nauki
i peregrynacje
[Sobieski s education and peregrinations],
Wrocław
1985).
The author s earlier book describes
Sobieski s education in Poland at the
Nowodworski
School and the Jagiellonian University of Cracow in
1640-1645,
as well as his educational wanderings
abroad in
1646-1648
and his studies in Paris and
Hague. It forms an introduction to the present subject.
This book is also a continuation of an earlier publication
devoted to the scientific patronage of the royal court in
Poland before Sobieski s reign (K. Targosz,

The patronage evolved under the auspices of the
first of the two French-born Polish queens
—
Louise
Marie (the other was Marie
Casimire d Arquien,
Sobieski s wife). Louise Marie not only had a decisive
influence on the early political career of John HI, who
had been implicated in the French court party, but also

strengthened his francophilous cultural orientation and
was a model for him to follow as a patron of science.
John Ill s role as a patron is presented in the first of the six
chapters. The author utilizes a rich collection of the opinions
and reports of the contemporary observers and participants
to present the intellectual life at his court. These
contemporary observers were of various nationalities
—
the
Frenchmen as
François Paulin Dalerac,
Philippe
Dupont
and Philippe
Avril,
the Italians as Cosimo
Brunetti
and
Giovanni
Battista Fagiuoli,
the German as Gottfried
Wilhelm
Leibniz, the British as Bernard O Connor. They
all stressed Sobieski s great mental agility, his knowledge
of several languages, the vastness of his interests and his
fascination with developments and trends in science. The
king led and inspired disputes at his court with secretaries,
doctors, engineers, mathematicians and chaplains who
constituted a sort of pre-academy. They were indeed in
direct touch with the academies, which in western Europe
had already been established as formal institutions.
The following five chapters are dedicated to various
disciplines, represented by the scholars engaged at the
court or those remaining in close contact with it. Also
presented here is the life and conditions under which
the king s court scholars worked, many of whom were
later forgotten.
Chapter II shows how Sobieski s achievements were
recorded in the contemporary epistolography, in various
written or printed relations, and how they were used in
historiography.
Sobieski
himself, famous for his letters to
his wife, which are outstanding examples of Baroque letter-
writing, is seen as an excellent chronicler of his times.
Chapter III brings an account of Sobieski s increasing
interests in cartography and geography. He was one of the
protectors of the Venetian
Accademia degli Argonauti,
Europe s first learned geographical society. Much space is
given to the aid provided by the king to explorers and

Jesuit
missionaries in their attempts to establish land
routes from Europe to the Far East (the French group of
Philippe
Avril,
the Italian group of
Filippo
Maria Grimaldi).
This chapter also presents John Ill s interests in the origin
and languages of the peoples inhabiting various countries.
These are evident particularly in the correspondence of the
royal librarian, the Jesuit mathematician, Adam
Adamandy
Kochański,
with Leibniz. In his studies on the classification
of languages, Leibniz often sought help and advice of
Kochański
and John III. However, this correspondence was
interrupted by the death of both, the king and his librarian.
Chapter IV focuses on the medical and naturalistic interests
of a group of royal physicians. They published scholarly
articles in the first scientific journals, e.g. the French
„Journal
des
Savants , the German
„Acta Eruditorum ,
and
in the first journal on natural sciences
—
„Miscellanea
Curiosa Medico-Physica .
Chapter V discusses the studies and publications in
mathematics, physics, and the art of war. The Polonized
Italian, Tito
Livio Burattini,
who was long connected
with the court, published his system of universal
measures in Sobieski s time. Conceived much earlier,
that system unfortunately appeared later than similar
projects put forward in western Europe. The Jesuits
Stanisław Solski
and
Kochański
were keen on the problems
of
perpetuum
mobile.
Solski,
who had always a very
practical mind, also published the first Polish treatise on
building. It was
Krzysztof Mieroszewski
who prepared
Polish hand-books on the art of fortifications for the
intended Knights Academy
(Akademia Rycerska)
in
Cracow.
Chapter VI is devoted to astronomy. It deals mainly with
Sobieski s sponsorship of Jan Heweliusz (Hevelius), who
was active in
Gdańsk
and member of the British Royal
Society, one of the most eminent astronomers of his time.
In gratitude Heweliusz dedicated to the king his Machinae

coelestis pars posterior (Gdansk
1679)
and an atlas of stars
which was the most beautiful Baroque atlas of the sky. He
called it Firmamentum Sobiescianum. Heweliusz s last
book, including the atlas, was published posthumously
thanks to Sobieski s subsidy paid to Heweliusz s widow.
Earlier, just after the victory of Vienna, Heweliusz had
called one of the constellations formed by himself, Scutum
Sobiescianum (Sobieski s Shield). In this way, as Heweliusz
put it, he honoured his patron, by a monument more
lasting than those of cedar, bronze or marble.
