(English Summary)
This monograph of Faik Konica, fighter for the independence of Albania,
noted linguist and author, distinguished literary critic and publicist, historian,
well-known translator, and accomplished stylist, is dedicated to the Albanians
of America, who have worked tirelessly during the entire twentieth century
for ethnic Albania, for their national culture, for their mother-tongue, for
Albanian scholarship and literature, for free press and speech, for progress
and democracy.
Faik Konica was an unrelenting defender of the territorial integrity of
Albania. From the time he was a child, he worked for the rebirth of his
fatherland. He devoted his whole life to the issue of Albania. An exhaustive
study about him has not been published until now: the present monograph is
the first of its kind. He was a complex and very interesting figure, and it is of
great use to analyze, investigate, examine, and trace him thoroughly, in order
to assign him the place that he deserves. He was an extremely learned
Albanian of broad culture and rare intelligence, with a brilliant, scintillating,
always serene mind, with resolute courage, with the refined taste of an artist,
with a profound knowledge of sixteen languages, with a range of talents that
extended from writer to scientist, with manifold interests in various fields of
erudition, as well as being a shrewd politician and diplomat.
It is precisely for these and other aspects of his personality that a grasp
of his activities in all areas is particularly attractive to the scholar of our time,
since Konica was a phenomenon without precedent in the firmament of the
Albanian national culture of his age.
The basis for an analysis of his fifty years of creativity are his major

of Skenderbeg“](1912); Gjermania dhe Shqiperia [“Germany and Albania”]
(1915); Dr. Gjelpera zbulon rrenjet e drames se Mamurrasit [“Dr. Needle
Discovers the Roots of the Drama of Mamurras”] (1924); Ne Hijen e
Hurmave [“In the Shadow of the Date-Palms”] (1924); Shqiperia si m’u duk

Konica was also the director of several organs of the Albanian periodical
press: Dielli [“The Sun”] (Boston, 1909-10, 1912-13, 1923); Flamuri [“The
Banner”] (Boston, 1910); Trumbeta e Krujës [“The Trumpet of Kruja”] (St.
Louis, 1911); Ushtimi i Krujës [“The Echo of Kruja”] (Durrës, 1913); Bota e Re
[“The New World”] (Boston, 1922-2 3); Shqiptari i Amerikës [“The Albanian of
America”] (Korçe, 1922-24); Kombi në Rrezik [“The Nation in Peril”] (Boston,
1923); Purteka [“The Sapling”] (Boston, 1923).
Konica’s contributions are many and varied. He had a great influence
on the Albanian intellectual movement, and especially on our literature. He is
a summit of Albanian national culture, a brilliant personality in the Albanian
pantheon, a knight and soldier of the Albanian crusade, a distinguished patriot
on the field of action, an artist, and a renowned thinker. His mission was the
advancement of his fatherland. The life of a protagonist on a narrow, long,
and difficult road for the good of his nation and his people had a special
meaning in this regard. Whenever he observed young people with a spark of
talent, he strove, like an ideal father, by means of personal contacts, to attract
them, develop them, nourish them, and elevate them. In the known history of
Albania, he was the first and only individual who created a school in the
Socratic sense. Many famous writers of Albanian classical and artistic
literature were discovered by him, launched by him, helped by him, and
encouraged by him. Faik Konica was a person with genius.
In the annals of modem Albanian history, Konica occupies a major
place. It was his fiery stimulus in the periodical Albania (1897-1909) that
opened the eyes of our countrymen to an understanding of the political reality
of the time. In terms of the effect they had on his countrymen, his emotional
articles calling for the independence of Albania may truly be compared with
Tom Paine’s articles in Common Sense at the time of the American
Revolution. Konica the patriot occupied an important place in the struggle for
self-government, and he must always be considered as the “founding father”
of the new Albania. He was the spiritual leader of the Albanians — the most
advanced intellectual of his time in our country, a distinguished promoter of
the Albanian language, the designer of the Rag of Skënderbeg, a keen critic
and the founder of Albanian criticism, a renowned publicist who was one the
finest Albanian writers in this field, a historian, a psychologist, a sociologist,
and one of the first ethnographers. He was a consummate stylist, whose
artistic form was dominated by patriotic, democratic, and enlightened content.
In fact, the theme — expressed or implicit — of all Konica’s writings, was his
love for his ancestral people and for his free, independent, prosperous,
civilized, advanced nation.

Faik Konica played an enormous role in the Albanian National
Renaissance [the Rilindja Movement] ( 1895 -1912) and in the Period of
Independence ( 1912 -19 3 9) . He was esteemed by the press as the father of
Albanian belles lettres, as the chief knight of the mother-tongue, freedom, and
independence, as the champion of his countrymen, and as one of the founders
of the Pan-Albanian Federation Vatra (1912). He set Vatra and its organ, the
newspaper Dielli, on the right road. He performed a great many precious
services for his nation. Konica was the one who made the issue of Albania a
living political issue. He placed the rights of Albania before the foreign
political and diplomatic world. He became the beacon of national union for
all Albanians. Beginning in 1896, he was able to gain friends for the Albanian
cause among such statesmen as Gladstone, Salisbury, Bryce, Goluchowski,
Berchthold, Ippen, Guicciardini, San Giuliano, D’Estoumelles, etc.
The Washington Herald and New York Journal newspapers (1934)
wrote about Konica as a journalist, as well as about his qualities as an
intellectual: his love for the beauty and truth of art, his natural generosity, his
prudence and wisdom, his refined and congenial manner, his character as a
complete gentleman, a brilliant host, a marvellous conversationalist and
speaker, a wit, an ironist with a fine, sharp sense of humor, and an individual
with a phenomenal and astonishing memory. Rare intelligence and ardent
patriotism were two of Konica’s fundamental characteristics. The Albanians
of America were proud that Albania had a diplomatic representative in the
USA who was among the leading personalities of their nation. There were
extremely few people in Albania and the Balkans at that time who had
Konica’s education, training, culture, and erudition. Dr. McGurr, commenting
on a talk by Konica on Radio America, said that Konica had profound
knowledge not only in the diplomatic field, but in history and sociology as
well. Dr. Frederick Snow, a philologist and the editor of Current History
Magazine, wrote: “Mr. Konica has few equals. Albania, a small country,
should be proud to have produced such an exalted person.” In an interview
that he gave to the newspaper Dielli (22 November 1929), the American
official Charles C. Hort expressed his admiration and regard for Faik Konica:
“It is the good fortune and honor of the kingdom of Albania to be represented
by that country’s greatest leader. Mr. Konica is one of the most remarkable
diplomats in Washington, and he has gained the affection and respect of the
offliials of the American government, as well as of foreign diplomats.”
From time to time, Faik Konica held conferences on Albanian and
international themes with American intellectuals, diplomats, publicists,
writers, and scholars. His listeners were astonished by the breadth of his
culture and erudition. His scholarly and political lectures were received and
heard with particular interest in the social circles of the American
intelligentsia. As a result of his distinguished merits, Konica participated as

In all places and at all times, Konica burningly, passionately,
convincingly, and resolutely defended the issue of freedom and independence
for Albania, the integrity and inviolability of Albanian lands, and national
sovereignty. Throughout his life, he fought against obscurantism, against
ignorance, and against backwardness, in order to ensure progressive,
democratic, and human development for his people.
Konica was in favor of a Western civilization. His mental world was
unbounded, limitless. His cultural range was extremely wide. A rare
intellectual, he was knowledgeable in all areas. In his time, there was no one
who could approach his abilities in the dimensions of science, language,
literature, culture, art, and diplomacy.
Faik Konica was a witness to, symbol of, and active participant in
political and national life, and in important events and the historical process.
The period during which he worked and agitated, propagandized and
militated, was densely filled with sharp contradictions in the economic,
social, and ideological areas. Konica was a distinguished political activist in
the Albanian national and democratic movement, a renowned thinker and
scholar in the Albanian world, a philosopher, statesman, and diplomat with
keen political characteristics, an artistic creator, and a master of the Albanian
written word.
Throughout his life, Konica was known and esteemed as an
implacable fighter for freedom, civilization, emancipation, democracy, and
liberalism, for political and intellectual pluralism; for open debate and
dialogue — not only in the Albanian parliament and constitutional assembly,
but also in the Albanian press, both inside and outside Albania. He was
among the first Albanian intellectuals, if not the first, who fought in writing
and vocally for freedom of conscience, speech, the press, and action.
Albanians everywhere, inside and outside the country, in the diaspora or in
various settlements and colonies in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas,
honored and respected Faik Konica as a profound expert on the cultures of
East and West, a polyglot, a gentleman, a philosopher, a folklorist, a publicist,
a journalist, a lover of the beautiful in art, but also a researcher in archives,
whose purpose was to disclose the traditions of the Albanian nation, a
systematic seeker and investigator in European libraries with a view to
finding relics of our national culture among incunabula and in the rich and
very precious collections of books on Albanian, Indo-European, Balkan, and
Oriental studies, as well as in rare and unknown manuscripts of the Middle
Ages.
From the beginning of his published activities, Konica brought to light
information on the prehistoric, mythological, and legendary antiquity of our

people from Classical Greek authors, such as Homer, Hesiod, and others. At
the same time, his readers valued him as a linguist, a violinist, a poet, a
musician, a novelist, an actor in the tragedies of Shakespeare, a historian, a
bibliographer, a literary critic, a translator of great European authors, a
sociologist, an ethnographer, an esthetician, a diplomat, a stylist and master of
the Albanian written language, a profound expert on opera and classical
music, a polyglot, and an athlete.
All these various aspects formed the complex figure of Konica. These
elements or components may seem contradictory and, from an external view,
incompatible, but actually they combined to constitute a unique personality in
the history of Albanian national culture during the first half of our century.
Konica was a person of internal spiritual alternatives, contradictions,
antagonisms, and tensions. But these were not simply personal, they
characterized an entire epoch.
Faik Konica was bom in 1876, on the eve of the Albanian League of
Prizren, in the Albanian province of Konicë, in the Çam region, 64 kilometers
from Janina — Ali Pasha Tepelena’s capital — in a territory where the
national cultures of Albania and Greece met, where Albanian was spoken, but
Greek was also understood. In his early childhood, he was educated by hojas
— Muslim teachers from the Oriental tradition; he was fed with elements of
the Arabic and Persian languages, and with Islamic religious instruction.
Later, he attended the Turkish educational institutions of Galata Sarai in
Istanbul, and then a Jesuit school in Shkodër, which was heavily influenced
by the Roman Catholic church and where emphasis was placed on Classical
languages, especially Latin, but also on several other, living, languages. In his
youth, he learned Modem Greek and Neo-Hellenic studies in a Greek school.
At middle school and university in France, he was imbued with the famous
principles of the French Revolution — liberty, equality, and fraternity — as
well as with the teachings of the great Encyclopedists — Diderot,
Montesquieu, d’Alambert, and Voltaire. He was formed through the ideals of
the British labor movement and American democracy. Faik Konica was a
summit of national culture, one of the most illustrious personalities of
Albanian intellectualism, dean and veteran of literature, prince and fosterer of
the Albanian language.
In order to present Konica as a complex, multifaceted, contradictory,
and highly sensitive personality, it is necessary to bear in mind today the
historical circumstances, the political events and changes, and the social,
economic, and cultural currents of the time, as well as his own psychological
characteristics. Every school he attended, every country in which he spent
part of his life, every contact with a particular Eastern or Western culture left
its traces on his spirit and mind. Special courses in Classical Greek and Latin

languages and literature, as well as in Sanskrit, Gothic, and Hebrew, kindled
his passion for the ancient world. The study of living languages (Italian,
French, English, German, Swedish, Danish SerboCroatian, Russian, and
Hindustani) caused him to absorb world civilization. They slaked his
unquenchable thirst for the sciences, arts, music, ethnography, and
psychology of the peoples who spoke these languages.
Oriental and Occidental cultures intersected in Faik Konica’s
personality, but the latter triumphed over the former. Konica was entirely
Western. Extremely intelligent by nature, highly studious, with a rigorous
work discipline, and a very refined sensitivity, Konica remains an exceptional
model in the sphere of Albanian scholars and writers. His contacts with noted
European scientists; his close friendship with those in French, Belgian,
British, American, Italian, Swedish, Austrian, and German intellectual circles;
his correspondence with specialists in Albanian, Balkan, Slavic, Hellenic, and
Indo-European studies; his passion for pure research; his constant visits to
archives, libraries, museums, art galleries, theaters, and the opera — all these
reflect important phenomena of his personality within the context of Albanian
national culture.
Characterized by the keen and capable intellect that he demonstrated
in many areas, by his extraordinarily retentive and tenacious memory, by his
iron will, and by his inquiring and penetrating mind, he was extremely
knowledgeable in many areas of language, philosophy, history, literature,
ethnography, sociology, music, and figurative art. Studying and working in
various countries of the world, and travelling and living throughout his whole
life in Europe and America, Konica had the opportunity to learn the
languages mentioned above. But there is no doubt that his exceptional
intelligence, acuity, and perseverance played a role in his learning them so
thoroughly.
In the history of Albanian literature of the National Renaissance (the
Rilindja) and the Period of Independence, Faik Konica is known primarily as
a prose writer. As such, he authored novels, pamphlets, feuilletons, poetic
prose, essays, articles, artistic portraits, and newspaper contributions. Worthy
of mention, too, are his travel impressions, his satirical and humorous prose,
and, especially, his polemics — printed debates. He made his name with
narratives full of the spirit of political and social satire, always woven around
the Albanian world. Konica was one of the founders of the Albanian novel.
The journals and newspapers that he established and directed are
important works for Albanian national and literary life, and contain materials
of very great value from the cultural standpoint. The most accomplished
writers of the time exhibited their creative abilities by adorning the pages of

these periodicals with their immortal works. Among these prose writings,
Konica’s always remain outstanding and inimitable. His keen pen constantly
drew the admiration and respect of everyone who read him. The journal
Albania has been justly considered an encyclopedic treasury of the Albanian
National Renaissance. Konica occupies a major place in the history of
Albanian journalism and publishing.
The greatest work to lay the foundations of Albanian literary criticism
was done by Konica. His critical remarks on new works, his interesting
judgments, and his cogent reviews revealed and highlighted some of the most
positive aspects of a number of our authors. His astute comments, as well as
his observations and suggestions, were of obvious assistance to the creative
artists. Konica’s opinions on literary criticism were outlined in several essays
written in 1906.
Konica’s existence was providential for the Albanian language. He
treated both theoretical and practical problems in his Albanological studies,
including general and specific issues regarding a unified literary language,
and he worked a great deal for an individualized Albanian alphabet. His
influence in terms of the language is quite evident in the work of our writers.
He did much for its formation.
In the field of Albanian historiography, Konica’s contributions are
distinguished by scientific objectivity and a wealth of archival references. He
was attracted to the glorious epoch of Skënderbeg, to Albanian humanism, to
the Albanian middle ages, to the diaspora, and to the National Renaissance.
In the field of artistic translations into Albanian, Konica’s work was
characterized by selective taste, by a feeling for quality, by method, and by
applied criteria. He rendered into Albanian flowers and pearls from the world
literature of both antiquity and the modem era. Konica was an exceptional
master of writing; he had a great thirst for authentic culture and sublime art;
he was a seeker of quality, a consummate stylist, an ideologist of the
Renaissance and the Period of Independence, a distinguished activist in the
national movement. He had a powerful influence on Albanian literature. He
was a potent, multifaceted personality, an arbiter of writing and of scientific
thought, a linguist, author, esthetician, publicist, politician, and diplomat. An
individual of profound erudition, Faik Konica was one of the most illustrious,
most renowned, and most civilized sons of Albania.
