The Bohemian Lands under the Last
Přemyslids
1,1192-1253
In the first volume of this two-part work on the historical development
of the Bohemian lands under the reign of the last
Přemyslids
in the 13th
century, an exposition of the transformation is proposed that occurred
in the
Přemyslid regnum
in the time preceding the ascension of
Přemysl
Otakar
I as well as the period of his reign and the reign of his successor
Wenceslaus
(Václav)
I.
With regard to the conception of the historical development as a com¬
plex of cultural changes, in the framework of which domestic conditions
formed in a long term interfered with the system of innovations devel¬
oping in the West, the explication concerning the Bohemian lands is put
into a context of the general state of European society in the High Middle
Ages. After the initial definition of the medieval period in the modern¬
ist view from Renaissance to the present, the book specifies a range of
preconditions of the medieval transformation taking into consideration
qualitative as well as quantitative factors (population growth, benign cli¬
matic conditions, development of knowledge regarding agriculture and
handicrafts, transformation of the cultural horizon of the medieval man
connected with results of Christianization, etc.). Further on, the place
of the historical issue of the Bohemian 13th century within Czech his¬
toriography is discussed. In this context the book points out the so far
predominant role of the nationally determined approach to Bohemian
history, which as such makes it impossible to describe the development
of the
Přemyslid
regnum in terms of the process of the cultural transfor¬
mation of Europe in the

I M 4th centuries. The initial overestimation
of national aspects of the historical development in the Bohemian lands
typical of the historiography of the 19th and early 20th century changed
into the overestimation of the role of the state and statehood, which can
be seen in the works of the
internar
period, totalitarian Protectorate, so¬
cialist Czechoslovakia, and even in the present. Nation and state became
interpretive grids which historians used concerning the period of the last
Přemyslids
and thus predestined results of their research.
The goal of the subsequent text is not modest: to avoid the existing
approach to the history of the Bohemian lands and place their develop¬
ment in the second half of the
12*
and in the 13th century into the con¬
text of the transformation of high medieval Europe as a whole. The book

deals with the influence of Romanesque and Gothic architecture on the
large-scale change of social structures and economic conditions which
by extension had impact on agricultural as well as handicraft produc¬
tion. The issues of the colonization of the Latin West as well as stratifica¬
tion of medieval society and process of its feudalization are also touched
upon. Towns and their importance within general historical develop¬
ment are not neglected either. A separate chapter in the book is devoted
to transformations of the mental world of the medieval man in the west¬
ern Christian area in the 14th century.
After these passages, this widely contextualized explication is applied
to the development of the Bohemian lands in the second half of the 12th
century, which is a period that can be regarded as an integral part of the
history of the last
Přemyslids
and even as a part directly determining the
subsequent rise of the Bohemian rulers within the Central European po¬
litical scene as well as the qualitative changes in the country towards eco¬
nomic prosperity and cultural progress. After the geographical horizon
related to the Bohemian history of that period is described, the origins
of monarchic charisma of the
Přemyslid
rulers are analyzed and a new
interpretation of the relationships of the Bohemian dukes to the rulers
of the (Holy Roman) Empire and to the Bohemian nobility is proposed.
In this connection, the importance of the interventions of the imperial
rulers into the Bohemian affairs in terms of transmission of feudal ele¬
ments of social structure is emphasized and, at the same time, the need
for innovations concerning the existing views of the distribution of pow¬
er in the
Přemyslid regnum
in the
11*
and 12th centuries is pointed out.
Based on the conclusions presented in this book, it follows that power
was
dualistic,
distributed between the ruler
(a Přemyslid)
and nobility
(the Bohemians). The role of Saint Wenceslaus in the ideology of the ear¬
ly Bohemian state and the relationship between the duke of Prague and
Moravian
Přemyslids
in the late 12th century are interpreted from this
standpoint as well.
In the subsequent chapters, the issue of the distribution of power is con¬
nected with the question of the property of the Bohemian nobles, their
role in the administration of the country and, by extension, their activi¬
ties at the Land Court of Justice. In accordance with modern research,
the origins of this institution are dated as early as the second half of the
12th century. In this part of the book, the Bohemian nobility is presented
as a socially established, economically independent stratum of mutually
interconnected individuals and families, whose exclusive position in the
Bohemian and Moravian environment is based on inherited qualities
(i.e. noble lineage) and property. A hypothesis is proposed that the ruler,
as was the case in the West, took advantage of the local powers of the no¬
bility, while the nobles, in turn, secured their unique status by means of

the authority of the ruler, who, as the earthly representative of the eter¬
nal ruler Saint Wenceslaus, guaranteed peace in the land.
An increasing importance of the role of the church, as an institution
the doctrine of which penetrated the mental world of laymen, is also an
integral part of the discussed process of the transformation of Bohemian
society. The book deals with the institutional development of the church
in the Bohemian lands as well as with the changes of religiosity of the
clergy and laity. The causes of these transformations are approached not
only from the perspective of the development of theological doctrines
and their modifications to the level accessible by the illiterate, but also in
consideration of the changing spatial conditions of the medieval world,
where churches built out of stone gradually became natural centres of
communal life. In connection with these trends, the ongoing process of
colonization in the second half of the 12th century is not neglected ei¬
ther. As a result of this process, the traditional settlement areas became
densely populated and the borders of settlement and, thus, of cultural
landscape, moved to less accessible regions. These chapters also describe
the material world of Bohemian medieval villages and life conditions of
their inhabitants.
The second part of the book continues with the large-scale analysis of
the historical development of the Bohemian lands, which is not limited
to political events. Still, political history is not neglected. A summary of
the existing literature on the role of
Přemysl Otakar
I and Wenceslaus I
in international politics is presented too. The text pays attention to the
substantial contribution of the Bohemian rulers to the course of impe¬
rial and papal policies in one of their fiercest struggles, the decisive role
of the Bohemian king and Moravian margrave in the conflict between
the Hohenstaufen and Guelfs at the beginning of the

the significance of Wenceslaus

military action against the Mongols in
1241.
These passages, above all, form an axis for an easier orientation
of the reader. The main emphasis is laid on the transformation of the
essence of ruling power
-
from ducal to royal
-
and the overall estab¬
lishing of kingship, by means of which the realm changed into the form
corresponding with the high medieval monarchies of the western type.
The importance and position of the Moravian margraves as well as their
court and properties receive the same amount of attention as the issues
related to the Bohemian kings.
This part of the book also contains a detailed analysis of the devel¬
opment of the Bohemian nobility with regard to their power potential
and relationships with the ruler

with a stress on a gradual feudaliza-
tion of Bohemian society
-
as well as the growth of their properties and
their simultaneous stratification. In this context, there are passages on
the impacts of new trends concerning structures of behaviour and man¬
ners
-
i.e. chivalry
-
and structures of the material world of the nobles
-

i.e. construction of stone castles, etc. Besides the reflection of the secu¬
lar nobility, the text deals with the issues of the spiritual elites. Again,
the transformation of the material aspects of the world of the Bohemian
church is described. This environment was affected by the flourishing
of the Romanesque architectural style as well as by the gradual accept¬
ance of the rules of the Gothic style, which can be metaphorically relat¬
ed to the general transformation of the mentality of the clergy and other
inhabitants living in the
Přemyslid regnum
at the beginning of the

century. This transformation reflects a return of the accentuation on the
earthly world. Simultaneously, the increasing direct influence of the pa¬
pal curia in Central Europe and the relationships between the church in¬
stitutions and secular nobility are taken into account.
Throughout the text, these issues are connected with a description
of the overall shift of the world of the unprivileged strata of Bohemian
and Moravian society, that is, the world of peasants. The process of colo¬
nization and the general improvement in agricultural conditions in the
first half of the 13th century are presented as the key aspects of this shift.
Both processes, in addition to the genesis of the earliest cities grant¬
ed with privileges and immunities, affected and broadened spatial and
mental horizons of the peasantry. Along with this development, the so-
called second stage of Christianization took place. All these factors creat¬
ed a mutually interconnected, spiral-like complex of ties, links, material
and spiritual constants and collective ideas, on which the monarchy of
the last
Přemyslids,
resulting from the above sketched transformations,
was built. The reconciliation between Wenceslaus I and his son
Přemysl
in
1249,
primarily aimed against political ambitions of the nobility, may
be considered a final triumph of the new monarchic principle. It was
thanks to the backing of the monarchy of this type that the
Přemyslids
were able to expand to the neighbouring countries of the Babenberg in¬
heritance. The first volume of the book concludes with a description of
this expansion.
