The Nationalisms of Different Nations

from the Perspective of Political Science and Religious Studies
Edited by Prof. Dr.

Bogumił

and Dr.
Olgierd
Grott
This book is a continuation of two previous volumes also edited by Prof. Dr.
hab.
Bogumił
Grott,
a long-time research and teaching employee at the Institute of Religious Studies of the
Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Professor
Grotťs
area of interest is the relationship be¬
tween the spheres of politics, culture, and religion, representing the youngest sub-discipline
of religious studies
-
political science of religion. The other co-editor of this book is Dr.
Ol¬
gierd
Grott,
assistant professor at the Institute of Political Studies and International Relations
at the same University. The first of the above-mentioned books is entitled:
Nacjonalizm czy
nacjonalizmy? Funkcja wartości chrześcijańskich, świeckich i neopogańskich w kształtowaniu
idei nacjonalistycznych

and Secular Values in Shaping Nationalist ideas]1, the second

Nationalist ideas and movements have played a great political and social role especially in
the first half of the twentieth century, leaving their mark on the periods history. Despite this,
the legacy of the nationalist thought did not receive proportional attention in the research
of specialists on the epoch. Some textbooks on the history of political doctrines do not dis¬
cuss nationalism at all or it is only briefly outlined, in a form that leaves much to be desired.
It is worth noting that an in-depth discussion of the issues of nationalism is not possible
while restricted only to historical or political studies approach; it requires an interdisciplinary
method
-
one not readily adopted by all the scholars. The issue of lukewarm interest in na¬
tionalist thought has also been noticed by the experts on the subject. Their attitude towards
such a state of affairs varies, and is worth at least a brief reflection. To begin with, let us have
a closer look at a book that is frequently cited in Poland and has already had two editions in
this country

a work by Ernest Gellner, entitled Nations and Nationalism^. In the chapter

Summary
Nationalism and Ideology the author, too, observes the weak interest in the ideas of national¬
ism on the part of "philosophical and political literature4.He also criticizes the low
-
in his
opinion
-
intellectual level of the creators of the political thought of nationalism, taking a very
categorical stand on that matter. He states that it makes no sense to go into the different con¬
cepts5, and concludes that one is not going to learn much of nationalism from studying the
writings of its believers6. In this short chapter, having belittled the nationalist thought in a few
sentences, he puts it aside as a phenomenon not worth considering for an in-depth analysis.
Let us examine the reasons for such a verdict.
Two Polish scientists from the
Nicolaus
Copernicus University of
Toruń,
Prof.
Jacek Bar-
tyzel and Dr.
hab.
Dariusz Góra-Szopiński,
in their book
Nacjonalizm a konserwatyzm
[Na¬
tionalism and Conservatism] address the problem quite differently than Gellner. They write:
Anyone who has had any contact with political science knows that year after year, in dif¬
ferent languages, there have appeared hundreds of (better or worse) works on nationalism.
Even a very cursory review of this literature demonstrates immediately that only a small frac¬
tion of it is devoted to nationalist political philosophy or
.
political thought. These appear
to be of no interest to most researchers or, perhaps, they are not aware of their existence
.
It is a somewhat surprising phenomenon, whose
-
let us not hesitate to say it
-
eccentricity
can easily be tested by imagining that a work on the idea of conservatism ignores Burke or
de
Maistre;
or an author of a study of liberalism is not interested in what Locke or Smith had to
say; or a work devoted to socialism fails to acknowledge the existence of Marx or Bernstein7.
Elsewhere in the same book, Prof. Bartyzel provides the glaring example of ignoring the
achievements of Charles Maurras
-
whose influence had international impact and reached far
beyond the borders of France: as far as Portugal and Poland8
-
by Alain Renaut, a professor at
the
Sorbonne
and the editor of the multi-volume History of Political Doctrines9.
The examples of research practice mentioned require some explanation. The conclusion
that presents itself is that such a situation could not be the result of differences between world-
views
-
justified from a logical point of view, but rather what we are dealing with is an extra-
academic tendency.
Taking into account also that factor, the editors of this book decided to bring about the
publication of one more volume devoted to various nationalist trends. The aim of this volume
is to highlight the diversity of the nationalist movements in their most fundamental aspects,
which should be given primary focus. These are the aspects related to the world of values. It is
obvious that Polish nationalism was a phenomenon quite different from German or Ukrain¬
ian nationalisms. Failing to notice those differences is a major mistake.
The papers included in this volume do not constitute a unified whole in terms of cover¬
ing a particular group of inter-related countries or a clearly distinctive of the period. They
are, however, by no means an accidental selection. Those papers aim to direct attention to the
fact that classifying different nationalist movements or ideas in the same category is not only

counter-factual, but also borders on social engineering. This gives rise to an assumption that
the disdain towards the nationalist thought as an object of scientific research displayed by
certain researchers (see Gellner) has, at least in part, its source here.
The authors of the papers comprising this and the two previous books mentioned above
are historians, theologians, political scientists, Orientalists, and even philosophers and educa¬
tors. The editors of this volume, as a rule, gave the authors a free hand in terms of not only the
length and level of detail of their works, but also of the interpretation of the issues touched
upon.

The first paper,
Nacjonalizm a katolicyzm. Wzajemne relacje i pojmowanie
-
od
Piusa
VI do
Jana Pawła
II [Nationalism and Catholicism: Relations and Understanding -from
Pope Pius VI to John Paul II], was written by an eminent expert on nationalist movements
in the Latin countries, Prof. Adam Wielomski. It includes a synthetic study of the volumes
central topics, which have been neglected in Poland for a long time. Of particular interest are
Wielomski's final remarks
-
he concludes that although the Catholic Church parted ways with
any types of Christian nationalisms, there are still some possible options left for that ideologi¬
cal and political stream.
Another paper, written by
Bogumił
Grott,
Szowinizm niemiecki jako obiektywna legity¬
macja reorientacji polityki polskiej dokonanej przez Romana Dmowskiego na początku
XX
wieku [German
Chauvinism
as an Objective Legitimization of the
Reorientation
of Polish
Policy by Roman Dmowski in the Early Twentieth Century] provides an overview of the
major trends shaping German nationalism developing in the nineteenth century and at the
beginning of the twentieth century. Nationalism is shown from a Polish perspective
-
as an
ideology threatening the existence of the Polish nation. The author presents German nation¬
alist ideology as the reason behind the
reorientation
of Polish foreign policy advocated by
Dmowski his book
Niemcy, Rosja i kwestia polska [Germany,
Russia and the Polish Question],
first published in
1908.
Already during that period German nationalism had displayed many
elements intrinsic to National Socialism, including racism and plans for the Germanization
of Polish lands.
The third paper, also penned by
Bogumił
Grott,
Doktryna Zadrugi a czasy obecne [The
Doctrine of
Zadruga
and Modern
Times] concerns Jan Stachniuk and the doctrine of the
neo-pagan group
Zadruga,
the reasons for the failure
ofthat
concept, and its possible reinter-
pretation in modern Polish reality.
Aneta
Dawidowicz in her paper
Tradycja i przeszłość w myśli politycznej Narodowej
Demokracji
1918-1939
[Tradition and History in the Political Thought of the National De¬
mocracy
1918-1939],
presents the attitude of the National Democratic Party to national and
universal history, which became part of the ideological impact
ofthat
largest nationalist for¬
mation in Poland.
Rafał Łętocha,
in the paper
Nacjonalizm liberalny Feliksa Młynarskiego [Feliks
Mfynarskľs Liberál
Nationalism], presents a liberal variety of nationalism using the example
of the views of one Polish politician.
Adam

ga's "Penetration Plan"], devoted his attention to a part of a broader process of nationalism
and Catholicism growing closer on many levels
-
from doctrine to institutional organisation

during the interwar period in Poland.
Wojciech Muszyński,
in the paper
Żydzi w publikacjach prasowych podziemia naro¬
dowego lat
1939-1947
a kwestia pomocy ofiarom Holokaustu
(Jews in the
Press
Publications
of the
National
Underground Movement in the Years
1939-1947
and the Question of Aid for
the Victims of the Holocaust], addresses a very interesting topic that is much needed today
due to the proliferation of numerous stereotypes and misstatements. He attempts to explain
the attitude of the National-Democratic circles and the
"Szaniec"
group towards the Jews dur¬
ing the period of occupation. He discusses the official opinions of those circles, which influ¬
enced their followers and created a new atmosphere around the Jews, at that time subjected
to extermination by the Nazis. Muszynskis conclusions contribute greatly to the knowledge
of the subject matter in question.
The second editor of this volume,
Olgierd
Grott,
in the paper
Ku chrześcijańskiej Eu¬
ropie
-
geopolityczne i cywilizacyjne koncepcje Konfederacji Narodu
[Towards a Christian
Europe - Geopolitical and Civilizational Concepts of the Confederation of the Nation] ex¬
amined a project to create a block of countries located in Central and Eastern Europe, whose
task was to become a counterweight to Germany and Russia.
Aleksandra
Pietrowicz, in the paper
Organizacja „Ojczyzna" jako wyraz dążenia do
realizacji idei powrotu ziem macierzystych do Polski [The "Ojczyzna"
("Homeland") Or¬
ganization as an Expression of the Desire for the Return of the Foundation Territories to
Poland], devotes attention to a nationalist political formation whose primary goal was the
struggle to regain for Poland the
Piast
lands on the Oder and the Baltic Sea.
Bogumił
Grott
is the author of the next paper: Idea
rekonstrukcji Słowiańszczyzny
potabskiej w świetle historii pism „Sprawy Łużyckie" i
„Wendischer Bote"
oraz politycznej
publicystyki Karola Stojanowskiego
[The Idea to Reconstruct the
Polabian
Slav Lands in
the Light of the History of the
Sprawy Łużyckie
and
Wendischer Bote
Periodicals and
Karol
Stojanowski's Political Journalism]. This article concerns the years of occupation, and re¬
minds of one of the plans of the Polish nationalists. It provided for the use of the anticipated
total defeat of Germany to carry out the reconstruction of the Slavic peoples in the lands of
Polabia and the creation of their states there, which would serve one primary objective: con¬
siderable weakening of Polish western neighbour by reducing its territory so that it would
never again pose a serious threat.
Bogumił
Grott,
in his next paper in this volume, entitled
Polityka polska wobec
Ukraińców, Ukrainy i ukraińskiego nacjonalizmu
[Polish Policy towards Ukrainians,
Ukraine, and Ukrainian Nationalism], addressed a very current and interesting topic. His
text provides a critical reflection on the shortcomings of the current government policy and
other official factors in Poland towards the issue of Ukrainian nationalism, the crimes com¬
mitted in its name in the past, and the present condition of the Ukrainian nationalist move¬
ment which testifies to the spread of its influence.
Krzysztof Kawęcki
in the paper
Tradycja narodowa i katolicyzm w publicystyce
środowiska „Słowa Narodowego" [National
Tradition and Catholicism in the Journalism of
the
Słowo Narodowe
Circles] examined one of the neo-National-Democratic groups that be¬
gan operations during the system transition period in Poland. The importance of the activity
of this group in comparison to other attempts to revive the ideological legacy of the National-
Democratic Party was quite prominent at the time, although the group failed to achieve its
main objective.

Summary
_ 593
The last paper on the subject of Polish nationalism is Adam Witczaks report on the re¬
building process of the national-radical movement which has been under way for some time.
The paper is entitled ONR
-
powrót na scenęi Rekonstrukcja radykalnego skrzydła formacji
narodowo-katolickiej? [ONR
-
Back on Stage? Reconstruction of the Radical Wing of the
National-Catholic Formation?].
Lucyna Kulińska
in the paper
Współczesny nacjonalizm ukraiński i jego antypolski
charakter w świetle programów partyjnych i wypowiedzi liderów
[Contemporary Ukrain¬
ian Nationalism and Its Anti-Polish Character in the Light of Party Programmes and State¬
ments of the Leaders] continues the topic of Polish-Ukrainian relations. The author attempts
a characterization of the Ukrainian nationalist parties operating currently, as well as certain
smaller groups within this trend.
Kulińska
discusses the far-reaching plans of the
"Swoboda"
party and shows the typical practical steps taken by contemporary Ukrainian nationalists.
The rest of the volume contains publications relating to diverse varieties of foreign na¬
tionalisms
-
both European and from beyond Europe.
Przemysław
Serednicki
s
paper:
Droga legionisty - ideowe zasady rumuńskiego Legionu
Archanioła Michała
[A Legionnaire's Road
-
the Ideological Principles of the Romanian
Legion of the Archangel Michael], is dedicated to the original formation created on the foun¬
dation of Christian nationalism developing among the Christian Orthodox Romanians. That
formation was an interesting symbiosis of political and religious threads.
Professor
Marek Maciejewski,
describing the
Nacjonalizm w koncepcjach niemieckich
rewolucyjnych konserwatystów w okresie międzywojennym
[Nationalism in the Ideas of
German Revolutionary Conservatives in the Interwar Period], seeks to confront national¬
ism with the National Socialism of the Nazi era, and above all to describe the leading figures
of the conservative revolution in Germany, and their views.
The next text, provided by the editors of this volume with the title
Poza dobrem i złem
-
u podstaw niemieckiego etosu
[Beyond Good and Evil
-
at the Heart of the German Ethos],
is comprised of fragments of the book by the late educator and philosopher
-
Prof.
Bogdan
Suchodolski
-
entitled
Dusza niemiecka w świetle filozofii [The German
Soul in the Light of
Philosophy]. This short work was published twice (in
1945
and
1947)
by
Instytut Zachodni
in
Poznan.
It is among the books that appeared after World War II, not only in Poland, in which
the authors attempted to understand the causes of the crimes committed by the Third Reich,
and the participation in these crimes of the German people, previously often referred to as
"a nation of philosophers" and "lovers music". Suchodolski attempted to demonstrate that
already during the pre-Hitler period it was in the German philosophy that the threads which,
to some extent, became the breeding ground for the later ideologies and actions of the Third
Reich could be found. Prof. Suchodolskis book also has considerable methodological quality.
It shows how to interpret, in an interdisciplinary way, the political phenomena whose roots
can sometimes be obscure even to the "full-blooded" political scientists or historians. There¬
fore, reprinting of fragments of Suchodolski
s
work today seems very much advisable. Three
chapters of the book were selected: Against the Christian Religion, Truth and Falsehood, and
Good and Evil. The reprinted fragments come from the
1945
edition.
The final text concerning Germany is the paper by
Żaneta Bugąjska-Moskal,
Paul
de La-
garde
jako reformator religijno-polityczny [Paul de Lagarde
as a Religious and Political Re¬
former], dedicated to one of the most prominent conservative nationalist figures in Poland.
Already in the 19th century, Paul
de
Lagarde used visions of politically enforced demographic
expansion of the German element into the Slavic East, including Polish lands, and began to
Undermine the foundations of Christianity in Germany
-
Lagarde was, among other things,

[Movement Against Illegal Immigration. Russia's Lively Xenophobic National¬
ism]. Without a doubt, the phenomena occurring in the internal ideological and political life
of Russia are of paramount importance to us in Poland. Therefore, the knowledge of those
phenomena is most desirable, and the development of the situation in Russia
-
a "part of the
world", after all
-
should be followed closely in Poland.

around the eponymous organization. It seeks to stop the extinction of the

language and national consciousness, which takes place due to Lusatia being dominated by
Germans and the depopulation of the region for economic reasons (overexploitation of black
coal proving destructive for
Lusatian

At the end of this volume the Reader will find papers discussing nationalist ideas and

[The Origins of
the Nationalism of Crimean and Volga Tatars], and the text by Adam
Szymański, Nacjonal¬

[Turkish Nationalism].
Michał Kuryłowicz,
in a paper entitled
Naród i nacjonalizm w pracach
Islama Kari-
mowa
[Nation and Nationalism in the
Works
of
Islam
Karimov], presents the idea of nation¬
alism promoted by the Uzbek authorities.
Marcin Rzepka,
in his text
Afgańskość wobec narodu i religii, lslamizm i nacjonalizm
w Afganistanie po
2001
roku
[Afghan-ness in Relation to Nation and Religion.
Islamism
and
Nationalism in Afghanistan after
2001],
deals with the complex issues of Afghan religious
and national identity in a country where religious fundamentalism is very strongly present.

This volume, as mentioned above, is aimed at
-
similarly to the previous two
-
pointing
out the wide variety of nationalist movements and ideas which have been associated with
diverse worldviews, religions and systems of values, which is reflected not only in theory, but
also in practice. Of course, volume addresses primarily the problems of Polish nationalism.
It is the more understandable since the consideration of the various nationalisms against the
background of cultural and social realities of the countries where they operate requires ad¬
equate erudition in a field that often exceeds the scope of a single discipline
-
be it history of
political science, and the use of sources which are often difficult to obtain in Poland.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my hope that this publication will con¬
tribute to raising interest in both the history and the contemporary state of nationalist ideas
as well as the nationalist movements whose aim is to implement those ideas, and finally
-
the

world of values associated with the nationalist movements. Hopefully, it will help debunk
many falsified claims that have grown around the phenomenon of nationalism and nowadays
do not serve knowledge, but rather the current political interests.
