The mountain region
od Mokra
Gora,
and
Žij
eb
on the
southwest Serbia, between the Ibar on north and
Metohija
on
south, is mostly made of carbonate rocks of Mesozoic and
Paleozoic era. The largest surface area belongs to limestones
of middle and upper Triassic period which thickness is estimated
to
8OO-12OO
m, and which are discovered almost from the very-
bottom of the
Metohija
valley to the highest peaks of
Mokra
Gora (21SS
m)
and
2
Ij eb (23S2
m).
Since limestones with high
content of
СаСОз
are concerned as well as tectonicall interected
faults and cracks, there are convenient conditions here for the
intensive development of the
karst
process.
Besides the chemical composition of carbonate rocks,
their position and texture, the development of the
karst
process
as well as forming of the shape and
karst
relief as a whole
were highly influenced by climatic characteristics,
pedologie
cover, vegetation and neotectonic movements. Under the influence
of all these factors, various forms of
karst
relief were develo¬
ped on
Mokra
Gora
and 2ljeb.
Numerous and various forms of lapies are related to
compact limestones, to the position, disposition and types of
texture, and there are also lapies under the
pedologie
cover
occurred by subcutaneus erosion.
Sinkholes are the most frequent and the most Important
form of
karst
relief of
Mokra
Gora
and 2ljeb, starting from
13OO
m
height above sea level to the highest peaks. There are
even more than one hundred per km2 ( spotted
karst ).
Their
classification is made on the basis of the morphographic and
morphogenetic features, gradient of sides toward the bottom
and the inter-relation of sides, place and conditions of occurren¬
ce, as well as on the basis of evolutive stage. In higher moun¬
tain regions, above

les preshaped by the effect of neves were developed. A greater
number of cavities (troughs) almost of polygenetic origin, fluvio-
