SUMMARY
This study deals with hydrological features of Golijska Moravica river basin
which are presented by detailed hydrological analysis. These analysis are based
on calculations of hydrological characteristics by frequency curves, which are
created using statistical methods. The results of these calculations can be used to
determine current status and to plan upcoming water management activities in
the basin.
We are going to briefly go through the most important results of this study.
1 )
Use of software
Microstation
made possible:
•
faster and more accurate determination of morfometric characteristics of
basins and rivers (surface area of basin and subbasins, width and length
of basin, length
ofrivers)
than in conventional way,
•
creating various thematic maps of river basin,
•
preparations for Geographic information system of river basin
(geometric part of
GIS),
•
gaining
3D
models.
2)
Analysis of mean monthly and annual water levels of rivers within basin
shows:
•
that variations of water level on all four hydrological stations are nearly
equal,
•
that continuality of water level through year is in shape of simple curve,
under common influence of pluvial and nival factors,
•
that Moravica and Veliki Rzav, largest rivers in basin, have pluvio-nival
regime of moderate continental variation.

As the result of this calculation we got criteria for determination of water
abundance of particular year (table
9).

Using method Ljvovic
(1974)
we find out that surface and groundwater flow
are approximately equal. Maximum ratio of surface runoff is at station
Roge
on
Veliki Rzav river, and minimum is at Arilje on Moravica river. This results from
much less wooded area of Veliki Rzav basin, than in particular basin of
Moravica river (table
13).

Seasonal flow calculation of Veliki Rzav at Arilje, using composing
method , has been conducted for the purposes of regional water supply system
Rzav . Calculation frequency for public water supply is
97 %.
In this method,
we divided year in to limiting period (I.p.), limiting season (l.s.), and through
them we got values for unlimiting period (a.-l.p.) and unlimiting season
(l.p.-l.s.):

Also, inner seasonal disposition of flow has been calculated by composing
method for low water group of years for Veliki Rzav at Arilje and average
water group for Moravica at Arilje (tables

This calculation shows
what s the ratio of monthly flow in seasonal for two group of years with
different water amount.

Inner annual disposition of Moravica flow at Arilje has been determined by
one more method
-
method of choosing actual year (tables
21, 22
and
23).
According to the results of this analysis ratio of spring flow is decreasing with
increase of water amount for year. This ratio is
63.1 %
in low water year,
56.6 %
in average low water and
31.7 %
in high water year. In high water year summer-
autumn flow increases because of the floods, which occurs in this time of year,
caused by storm rainfalls. Winter flow is the most constant in all years.

conditions of projecting hydrotechnical object of first class. It s well known that
in future at this site dam should be constructed for the big multipurpose

important for planning the height of embankments for flood defense. They show

At the Moravica river mouth total water power is
191.4
MW, specific power
of Moravica is
2.2
MW/km, while the ratio between river power and basin area
is
0.126
MW/km2. In Moravica basin there is only one hydroelectrical plant,
situated in Ivanjica, with installed power of
0.15
MW. This means that only
0.1 %
of basins water power is used for producing electrical energy.
Construction of four hidroelectrical plants of total power
44.8
MW is planned,
according to Spatial plan of Serbia from
1996.
It s
23 %
of hydroenergetical
potential of Moravica river basin.

Taking in account the results of water quality on
hydrostation
Gradina
and
sources of first category, it s possible to present variations of water quality all
the way through Moravica river. Upward from Ivanjica, the largest town in
basin, Moravica belongs to the I class water quality, from Ivanjica to
Gradina
and all the way to it s mouth Moravica is in II/III (lib) class. Throughout almost
the entire length of its course, the Veliki Rzav river belongs to class I, and only
after receiving tributary Mali Rzav, and through the town of Arilje, Veliki Rzav
belongs to the II class. Tributaries of Moravica,
Lucka
river and Grabovica,
belong to the I or
I/II (Ib)
class.
Analysis presented in this study directly point at big possibilities of water usage
in Moravica basin. The Moravica river basin is characterized by a very generous
flow, and quality of the water is very good. For this reason, the greater part of the
Moravica river basin was proclaimed a surface-water reserve for the water supply
of settlements in the future. Already functional is the regional water supply system
Rzav , whicii supplies the five towns of Arilje,
Požega,
Lucane, Cacak,
and
Gornji Milanovac.
In addition to this, waters of the Moravica river basin can also
be used for other purposes, such as generation of hydroelectric power, recreation,
and irrigation.

ANALYSIS
For realization of plans of water use and protection the construction of reservoirs
is necessary. Construction of four large reservoirs in Moravica basin until
2021.
is planned, according to Spatial plan of Serbia from
1996.
They are three
reservoirs on the Veliki Rzav river:
Roge , Arilje
and Orlovaca and one on
Nosnica
river at Medjurecje ( Rokci ). These reservoirs are foreseen for
multipurpose exploitation. There s water will be used for water supply, flood
protection, generation of electrical energy, water quality protection, irrigation,
fishery and recreation.
Meanwhile, we can see that for last ten years nothing was built, neither
construction began of any new reservoirs in the entire Serbia. That s why
solutions from Water Management Section of Spatial plan of Serbia from
1996
are impossible to apply, not only because insufficient financial funds, but also
because of unreasonably big water consumption, which was projected at that
time.
Regional water supply system Rzav supplies five towns with total of
122 000
residents. Projected capacity of system Rzav is
2 300
1/s, which corresponds to
the needs of mentioned towns until year
2030.
According to that, daily water
consumption would be
1 630
liters per capita. For realization of this consumption
construction of reservoirs
Roge
and Arilje is required.
Water treatment facility in Arilje has capacity of
1 200
1/s. With this needs, daily
water consumption would be
850
liters per capita. For realization of this
consumption only construction of reservoir Arilje is required.
Current production of clean water is
650
1/s which corresponds to daily
consumption of
460
liters per capita, which is two and half times bigger than in
European Union
(180
I/per capita/day).
Therefore, if there is a need at all for construction of reservoirs in Golijska
Moravica river basin, my opinion is that construction of only one reservoir
Arilje is enough. It will provide an adequate amount of water not only for
regional water supply system Rzav , but also for other towns in region until year
2030.
Water treatment facility in Arilje would work with full capacity, i.e. there
will be no need for reconstruction of plant. Detailed projects and achieved
agreement already exist for construction of this reservoir.

Ensuring enough quantity of water in future and securing quality water for drinking
by water resource protection needs to be solved in nearest future, because we can
already see that water will be the most important strategic natural resource.
To satisfy needs for water we must work on regulation and protection of water
resources. To achieve this it s necessary to enable rational use of available water
resources combined with construction of some reservoirs, which are well checked;
then to build waste water treatment plants for protection of available water, as well
as their reuse; to establish integrated water management on larger river basins,
which can achieve rational regulation, protection and use of water resources.
Serbia, which is now in transition and which had some problems with water lately,
should implement integrated water management, which assumes interdependencies
of water use, water protection and protection from water, because it will enable
success not only in water economy, but also will contribute to overall
development and bringing Serbia closer to European Union.
According to
EU
Water Framework Directive water management will be done
within river basins. For realization of integrated water management in basins
adoption of River Basin Management Plans until year
2009.

plans are based on detailed hydrological analysis, i.e. on concrete calculations. This
study presents one of this analysis, which would contribute to creation of water
management plan in Golijska Moravica basin.
