Summary
Lykynge: Marriage and Informal Relationships in
17th and 18th century in the Polish Countryside.
Social Imagery and Personal Experience
Until recently historians have not paid much attention to the indi¬
vidual life experience of common people. Only thanks to such fields as
social history, microhistory, and new cultural history some tools allow¬
ing to study the live stories of subordinate members of society, which
were generally omitted from historical discourse, have been developed.
The aim of the study is to understand how peasants, who lived in
the 17th and 18th century Poland experienced their life. The study will
focus on only one but essential subject, that is on broadly understood
sexual life. For years it was the subject of study for ethnology and cul¬
tural anthropology. Thus it focused on features that were unchange¬
able and universal, and compared distant cultures without historical
context. There was a tendency to look at peasant s sexuality as natu¬
ral and spontaneous, so it was eagerly compared to the sexual life of
animals. From the historians point of view sexuality makes one of the
most important sets of cultural norms which co-form spiritual strata of
human civilization and as such it is subjected to historical change. In
the case of folk strata (including peasants in the pre-modern Poland)
that set of norms played a significant part in the culture of everyday life
because it determined the biological survival of the community.
In order to examine and to describe the sexual life of peasants from
17th and 18th century Poland in the frame of their individual life experi¬
ence and social expectations the method which could be described as
a multiplied biography was used. Information that concerned the sub¬
ject were grouped, then compared and later on generalized in case it

was feasible and necessary. On this basis it was possible to recreate the
sequences of events that followed in the personal life course of peasants.
The individual stories of peasants were searched for in the village
court records that were available from

villages and estates from
Lesser Poland, just about
60
from the Polish-Ukrainian borderland and
from
10
villages from Greater Poland and the Masovian region. Addi¬
tional information is delivered in town court records from cities and
towns where peasants accused of serious crimes were tried. There are
three types of case files that were analysed in the course of the study:
first
—
civil records, such as premarital agreements, marital financial
contracts, wills and inventories; second
—
dispute cases, such as cases
of broken engagements and moral quarrels, disputes over division of
succession; third
—
criminal cases that covered petty offences against
decency that were ruled either by the landlord or village council and also
serious offences that were tried in municipal criminal courts. Most of
these sources help to reconstruct, sometimes in a very detailed manner,
the behaviour and activities of peasants and to retrace the hierarchy of
their values. Some testimonies of the accused can be treated as a kind
of autobiography because they customarily covered the

Because

their dispersion, these types of sources cannot be the sub¬
ject of traditional biographical research lor they cannot be verified.
The reason is that a single document is usually the only record con¬
cerning a given person. That is why they cannot serve as a source of
knowledge but as an example of narrative construction of reality which
reflected the world of social imaginations. Despite the fact that a life
story recreated folk narratives, it preserved the personal life experience.
Therefore, the subject of the research are the biographical artefacts,
that is events and actions which were presented in testimony, present¬
ed as true (sincerely or not) and considered as true by the court and
the author alike. Ultimately, the frame of reference is the reality cre¬
ated by the source records, and not the reality supposed to be registered
by them.
The multiplied biography created in that manner describes the events,
that make the members of the examined group behave in a typical man¬
ner, the events that shaped their personality, and the events that resulted
from the actions of an individual. The outcome is a broad spectrum of
direct historical experience that affected almost every member of early

modern peasant
strata,
or only few of them, or even single individuals.
On this basis, the study sketches broad narrative frames, which covered
personal experience and actions, and analyses cultural norms of sexu¬
ality in the Polish countryside, their application, transgression, social
supervision, and personal agencies.
Premarital relationships
—
the first part of the book covers a subject of
sexual activity of unmarried men and women. It describes legal, reli¬
gious and practical aspects of premarital sexual activity in village life.
It refers to the norms of sexual ethics, it describes the instances and
circumstances that gave rise to this kind of sexual relationships, their
duration, the manners of courting and places of meetings. It also refers
to sexual acts that took place in premarital relationships, mentions con¬
traceptive methods and the problem of illegitimate children. Finally, it
describes transition from premarital relation to marriage, concubinage
and the cases in which the relationship breaks despite the presence of
offspring.
The second part of the book is devoted to the subject of marriage. It
refers to different aspects of peasant marriage like external restrictions
when choosing a spouse, presents the model of marriage and emotions
that shaped the relationship. Further on it analyses the function of mar¬
riage, everyday life experience of spouses, sexual life, attitude towards
children, quarrels and violence in marriage. The very last part is devot¬
ed to the declarative indissolubility of marriage, the reasons for breaking
up the relationship and how society perceived stability in marriage.
The third part is devoted to extramarital relationships and studies
individual cases in order to present the experience of individuals. It
describes circumstances and sequences of extramarital sexual relation¬
ships, and recreates the criteria of sexual attractiveness. It also refers
to social reception of marital infidelity and long-lasting extra marriage
relationships. Finally it analyses the main problems of incoherence
between the declared norm of Christian marriage and its realisations in
real—life experience.
