Indian Ocean was long one of the world s most important trade zones, with
Arab and Indian merchants controlling the exchange of spices, frankincense,
slaves, ivory, and timber between the East African coast, Arabia, India, and
China. But conquerors followed traders, and the nineteenth century saw the
peak of the British-French rivalry in the Indian Ocean. Napoleon Bonaparte and
his British counterparts battled for alliances to secure the route to India,
pirates looted, adventurers like Richard Burton and Henry Morgan Stanley
sought their fortunes, and Italian spies and American whalers got in on the
action. Meanwhile, the Omanis consolidated their empire, which stretched from
the Persian Gulf to the East African coast Saiyid Said bin Sultan
Al Bu Sa id
moved the imperial capital from Muscat in South Arabia to Zanzibar and
became the first sultan of the island. He masterfully manipulated the British-
French rivalry to his advantage. One key battleground was the slave trade, which
the British tried to ban while French merchants expanded it Nicolini provides
a colorful portrait of a thrilling and turbulent time in world history.

author of Studies in Witchcraft, Magic, War and Peace in Africa: Nineteenth and
Twentieth Centuries, among other works.
