RUSSIA IN SLOVAK HISTORY AND CULTURE
The publication aims at researching the phenomenon of Russia in the awareness
of the Slovak society while it does not avoid both delicate and controversial topics
(Russia in Slovak press after August
1968,
the attitude to Moscow of the Slovak com¬
munist elite and the like).
In choosing themes the authors focused on matters important for creating the
image of Russia in the Slovak society which were on the margin of interest of profes¬
sional public because they were ideologically unacceptable. The collective mono¬
graph also pays attention to the effect of myths in mutual relationships.
The Russia orientation on the turning of 19th and 20 11 century is in the Slovak his¬
tory connected especially to the name of Svetozar
Húrban Vajansky
and political elite
in
Turčiansky Svätý
Martin.
Daniela Kodajová
compares Vajansky
s
idealization of
Russia with the pragmatism of
T. G.
Masaryk,
which proved to be more far-sighted.
Slovak tradesmen and entrepreneurs knew Russia better than politicians from Martin
before the World War I. because these followed the humble beginnings of
entrepre¬
neurship
of Slovak tinkers, milers, traders with spices and other door-to-door-sellers,
as written by Roman
Holec.
Many of them were able to build prosperous businesses
in Russia and gain social influence. The outbreak of war made banking trade more
complicated, while those who had Russian citizenship were in a better position.
When Bolsheviks took control, Slovak companies disappeared.
Ľubica Harbuľová
talks about experiences of Slovak soldiers who were in captivity in Russia and later
fought in Czechoslovak legions. Many of them were eye witnesses of turbulent politi¬
cal events and gloomy circumstances in the time of civil war, which they described in
their memoirs and books (journalists V.

Gacek, I. Mikołaj,
writers
Janko
Jesenský,

and others.)
The positive
relationship of
Ľudovít Štúr
to czarist Russia (in the book
Slovanstvo
a svet budúcnosti-
The Slavs and the future world) was one of the main arguments of
liberal Czechoslovak critics in the period between the two wars, which was to cast
a shadow upon the creator of standard Slovak.
Tatiana Ivantyšynova
analyzes the
Russian background of this struggle of
Štúr
in the Slovak politics.
In the period between the two wars, communists were the proponents of soviet
Russia (magazine the
Dav)
.
The right wing political forces were strong critics of soviet regime (magazine of
Catholic intelligence
Nástup).
Articles in the
Dav
were of
propagandistic
or even

character (especially in information about Moscow processes). Legitimate
criticism of soviet regime in the
Nástup
was devaluated by fondness of totalitarian
fascist regime. There was also strong anti-Semitism as shown in devoted analysis of
Milan Zemko.

Matejko
writes about the work of Russian philosopher of widely known
name
Nikolaj Onufrievič
Losskij at Philosophical Faculty of the Slovak University
in Bratislava in the years
1942 - 1945.
Losskij s years in Bratislava were profession¬
ally very fruitful since he topped his epistemological concept of intuitivism here.
His ideas had a very lively response in Slovakia but there were also uproarious dis¬
cussions. After the year
1945
these went beyond professional polemics and became
a part of ideological struggle which came to its head in
1948
when its followers were
politically liquidated.
After
1948
the attitude of Slovak public towards Russia was determined by the
official attitude of the government and political organs. All members of Slovak com¬
munist elite had a loyal relationship to Moscow but there were differences in their
attitudes too, as analyzed by
Michal Barnovský.
Some of them never doubted about
SSSR (e.g.V.
Bilak), followers of Kominterna had coded obedience of Moscow in
themselves, but at the same time they were afraid of it. Only educated and sophis¬
ticated communist intellectuals (V. dementis,
L. Novomeský
and others) dared to
doubt about the politics of communist party of Soviet Union time to time. Pragmatic
attitude towards
SSSR
had
Gustav Husák,
the emotional relationship of Alexander
Dubček
changed after August
1968.
The analysis of Slovak press after August
1968
by
Barbora Černušákova
is revealing.
Through content analysis of the press she differentiates a few topical levels in
creating the image of
SSSR:
relationship towards socialism, relationship to Russians,
relationship to Russian soldiers. The result of the analysis is that the bad experience
with communist regime in
SSSR
did not result in specifically negative image of Russia
as a nation and Russians as individuals.
Dagmar Podmaková
brings a devoted view of Slovak
-
Russian theater contacts.
She reminds us about the rich tradition of Russian drama in Slovak theater (Gogol s
Inspector was first played in Slovakia in
1871)
and inspirations of Russian theater
avant-garde in the period between the two wars. Slovak theater saw a triumphant
success in
SSSR
in the year
1961.
The promising theater contacts were interrupted
by the year
1968.
During normalization many plays by Soviet authors could not be
presented in Slovakia, that is why directors often used Russian classics. The impor¬
tant Slovak directors
(Ľ. Vajdička, B. Uhlár)
put into these plays statements about the
state of Slovak contemporary society. After the year
1989
the number of Russian plays
diminishes based on a few reasons (difficulties with perception of Russian life and
institutions, violence in society, the problem of terrorism and the like). The plays of

Zahradník
are an interesting phenomenon of acceptation of Slovak drama
in Russia, who is an author not fully appreciated in Slovakia but very popular in Russia
since the
70s
of 20lh century.
The monograph brings facts to some key questions of the relationship of Slovaks
to Russia, it testifies about the importance of these relationships, especially in the
field of culture. The image of Russia in Slovaks free from myths and stereotypes needs
to be integrated into the awareness of modern Slovak society.
